Meanwhile, a stark warning to clubs of what can happen when you let your players dabble with the internet... :D

"Robinson posted a message on Saturday which read: "Ashley-Paul is goin fulham on monday. If i pull dis off im on dis ting." On Sunday he added: "Ashley-Paul is travling 2 Bath With Fulham Fingers Crossed.""

Does anybody else find this 'texting' spelling annoying? Or am I just showing my age?

I was hoping some of our younger members might be able to translate, to be honest.

By the way... anyone interested in running the MacRumors Fantasy Football League (through the Official Premier League thingy) again this season? At the moment you can select a basic team and chop and change players without penalty before the start of the season.

If folk are interested, I can register us a League of our own and start a thread. :)

Maybe he's just a dumb ass.

don’t know if this will deter using that fantasy footie league but this is in the FAQ:

Q: I'm using the Safari browser and it keeps crashing whilst trying to select my team?

A: This problem is fixed in the latest beta version of Safari which you can download from apple.com, or you can use Firefox or Opera.

Hmm... for what it's worth I logged on (using Safari) and created a team last night with no difficulties at all. Fingers crossed all is well, if not I will say that – as the site recommends – I used Firefox all last season, once again with no trouble.

Righto then... this evening I'll set up a league and start a new thread.

I’m thinking: “what’s Firefox?” as I’ve never had the need to know!

yeh I looked via Safari seemed OK site to use, but was a bit shocked by the complicated scoring system as I usually play the Metro version, as it’s simple and so am I.

I will look into it some time though, thanks JC.

So what is the deal with Mike Ashley and Newcastle? Is he really going to bugger off? It looks like the Americans weren't interested in Newcastle but the offer was made...by someone.

On SkySports website Ashley has denied wanting to sell up but admitted that he is looking for investors, asked about the Bin Ladens:

On the link with The Saudi Binladen Group (SBG), Ashley said: "I think I'll start with people from Newcastle, not in some cave in Afghanistan."

don’t think he'll be going on his hols to Saudi anytime soon then!

Holy crap, a 30 point deduction. Really can't see them avoiding relegation.

EDIT - Last season, Mansfield were relegated on 42 points chester were 3rd bottom on 47 points. so using that as a guide Luton will need to be in promotion form just to avoid dropping out of the football league.

May I be first the first to congratulate the FA on effectively ruling another football club out of business.

And may I be the first to say well done to them :D Joking aside it is perhaps a little harsh to give them -30 points to start the season off with. Basically forcing them to be relegated next season. Although I would imagine the financial planning that went on must have taken this into account.

This is basically the FA kicking them out of the football league. I really can't seeing them getting enough point to avoid relegation. So it's conference football for Luton next year.

The 08/09 season of the MacRumors Fantasy Football League is all set up and ready for some new teams. The thread (with details on how to join the league) can be found here.

Excellent, thanks Jaffa!

I think it's the right decision as well. It is all too often that sports teams get away with cheating with little more than official censure, which amounts to nothing. Fans of Formula 1 will remember that McLaren recently got caught cheating and got away with it - sure they were hit with an astronomical fine but it was essentially as slap on the wrist as the racing team continues operation as normal and keeps making money. They should have been banned.

Sheesh, that's a bit crass from Ashley. Makes him sound like a complete moron.

I actually thought that McLaren were treated very harshly by the FIA (because the 'cheating' was against their darling Ferrari.) I didn't even consider it cheating, thought it was part of the normal shenanigans in sport. In a previous occupation (funny enough in the motor industry) we held copies of a competitor's plans when we were building a rival factory. Is that cheating or just business sense? Over the summer Rangers feigned interest in a player in order to inflate the transfer price for their rivals Celtic (a tactic Celtic have used against Rangers too.) That meant Celtic had to pay more for the player, is that cheating?

I wouldn't say it's cheating as such – for one thing, has any rule or regulation actually been broken in this instance? Now, if the question was is it unethical and unsporting then that's another matter...

A lot of rule-bending takes place in F1, and plenty of out-and-out cheating too. But what McLaren did was beyond the pale. A Ferrari employee stole the design documents for the entire Ferrari racecar and gave them to a McLaren employee. That goes way above the usual "shenanigans" that are endemic in the sport.

Well, since we aren't talking sport in this case it isn't cheating so much as totally unethical business practice. Not to mention the fact that the plans were probably obtained in an illegal manner.

Again, probably not breaking rules but unethical. It's made worse by the fact that the SPL is a two-team league.

Re: cheating
Certainly is a gray area when it comes to sport, if it's not a written rule then when is it unethical and when is it cheating, bearing in mind peoples ethics can widely vary especially with upbringing and locality (acceptance by some of diving in football comes to mind.)

Apologies for the attitude of my local paper, that is no way to refer to the team sitting mid table in the mighty Premiership! But just goes to show you that Hull have got more pulling appeal than a Scottish club with a guaranteed European place every year!
