Wow. I opened this thread and expected to talk about my New York Jets.
Your New York Jets?! Blimey everyone, that must mean fleshman03 is none other than billionaire Jets owner Woody Johnson!

The presence of a rich American can only mean one thing – clearly he's here to stage a Hicks and Gillettesque purchase of és:. :D

Enjoy the ride Hull City! (except for Sat 13.09.08)
Heh. Prepare ye for a mauling. ;)

Not mine but the root I root for. Been a Jet fan since growing up.

And I don't think you're going to see an American buying a team over there because of how crappy our currency is.

No, we're talking about football, the biggest sport on the planet. Not egg throwing.

;)

I completely respect the sport of Soccer. :D I know it's the biggest sport anywhere ever. I just like egg throwing ...er.... American Football better. Nothing like seeing two huge guys beating the hell out of each other for a pig skin.

Looks like we've officially got Robbie Keane. :)

20+ million is probably a fair price for a Premier League striker of his quality, though I wonder how many years he has left in him. Can't wait to see El Nino's new strike partner in action. I'm really beginning to wonder why I was excited about Barry before...things look pretty good as it is.

But my goodness, Daniel Levy was all sour grapes about it...if he thinks that was bad, wait till Manchester United finally nick Berbatov.

I do feel for Spurs though - it's a mass exodus at the moment, and while I'm confident that Juande Ramos knows what he's doing it looks like this season will be all about rebuilding rather than hunting for silverware.

I think Kenyon is going too far by essentially telling everyone outside the big four to quit whining and find their own billionaires...easy to say that when you've got Abramovich's substantial pocketbook behind you. And anyway, if that did happen, what on earth would be the point of promoting and relegating teams? Promoted sides would stand zero chance of staying up.

Well the truth of the matter is as a Middklesbrough fan I've realised that we're gonna spend comfortably £10 million this year but I knw we're not gonna finish in the top 10. Football is just not a business model.

The striking partnership seems, on paper at least to be complete for LFC.

I think it's got potential. He's a clever player but I still think we could do with one or two more players (right wing and right back)

I'd still like to see Barry in there with Gerrard.

I don't.

Anyway...

Now it looks like we'll go from Berbatov-Keane in front to Bentley and one of the Russians. It just seems like a lame swap: basically their two best players will be gone and a new set of strikers wouldn't seem to be the most promising move. Even if their replacements are very good, there won't be much time for Ramos to meld all the new players into his system.

I guess my biggest disappointment is that Keane forced the move in the first place. He really put Spurs in a bad situation and gave them only one team to negotiate with. While I still like him as a player, I have to admit that I wouldn't be sad if he missed a few months with a knee injury.

Yeah, I was shocked to hear that he'd put in a transfer request. You need to remember though, like I mentioned earlier, people this side of the atlantic grow up loving teams and their heroes, we were by far the most successful and biggest team when he was growing up and Ireland and Liverpool are linked quite closely anyway.

Bad show, old chap ;)

Arshavin would be a fantastic catch, even if he might take a season to settle.

I was surprised to see the whole Keane thing develop. It's a rough time to be a Spurs fan but with Ramos at the helm and some money top spend I can see them bouncing back, if not this season then the next.

eh, who knows.. maybe juande has something up his sleeve... modric was a good signing...

£20mill for a 28 year old Keane, wow, he is good mind and a deceptively fast player who is good at making space for himelf and his team mates, with a good sense for scoring. But from what I’ve heard about Ramos he hates people not doing things ‘his way’ and Keane was petulant a few times at being substituted.

Even though Liverpool contacted Spurs first and have put a good offer in, his handing in a transfer request has cost Keane a good £2mill cut of the deal, but it’s probably put him on £4 to £5mill a year now anyway.

I can see Arshavin as his replacement.... ?

Fair enough, but if he harboured such a deep and lifelong love for Liverpool he maybe shouldn't have gone kissing other clubs badges when he scored for them. ;)

The lack of a different defence will cripple their season though. Great going forward ... not so at the back.:p

It still bothers me. Of all the changes that could be made, scoring didn't seem to be one of them, and yet they've been forced to do just that. The one strength of the team is now unsettled at best. I haven't seen any signs that their defense will be better than last year, except maybe that a new keeper will save a few of the easy ones from going in.

I tell myself over and over that Ramos has a plan of some kind.

As an aside, West Brom have unveiled their new kit – and rather unusually it doesn't feature a sponsor's logo.

See, the Baggies haven't been able to secure a shirt sponsor yet, so the shirts are being sold to supporters plain. Once they have found a company willing to stump up the cash, supporters can toddle along to the club shop and have their shirts printed with the logo.

To be honest, I'm a bit jealous. I'd love it if we were in a similar position and were able to buy our shirts plain without an awful great logo in the middle. I reckon quite a few West Brom supporters 'won't get around' to going along and getting a logo added.

If WBA cannot get a shirt sponsor they should 'do a Villa' and put a local charity on their shirt.

"Athletic Bilbao have won admiration for proudly sticking to their traditions, being the only team in Spain, and one of the very few in Europe, to have refused to carry shirt publicity.
Until now, that is.

Sports daily Marca reported on Saturday that Bilbao have signed a lucrative contract with Basque oil refinery Petronor to carry their shirt publicity for the next three seasons.

The deal is to be made official on Tuesday evening, when the club will show off its shirts for next season. The famous red-and-white stripes will continue, but now with Petronor written across them.

Marca said that the shirt deal will earn the famous "Basque Lions" around 1,5 million euros per season.

This is one of the ideas of new club president Fernando Garcia Macua to increase revenue and he seems to have the approval, albeit reluctant, of most club members.

Supporters of Los Leones will be split, because they recognise that €1.5m-per-season will help ensure that the team can be strengthened, while traditionalists will ask why things have had to change now.

The Basque Country club have always been proud of the fact that they have never carried a company name on their jerseys and even now manufacture their own kit.

But economic constraints have made the introduction of a sponsor a must and a deal with local company Petronor has been agreed and signed.

Spanish energy giants Repsol, are the parent company to Petronor and their president, Antoni Brufau, is expected to attend the official announcement on Tuesday."

Sad to see an era like that end. Good for them though. Maybe the money made will improve the club... They make their own kit for crying out loud. Tre chic...
