It's all rather murky. Thaksin Shinawatra has apparently broken the terms of his bail to flee to these shores, vowing never to return to his native Thailand. If I was a (Manchester) City supporter, I might just be feeling a bit worried at the moment about the situation my club has found itself in.

From what the fans on the City forums are suggesting Thaksin's takeover of the club was funded by a loan he now cannot afford the instalments on, since he was expecting his Thai assets to have been unfrozen several months ago.

Which means another member of the board had to dig into his pockets last month to pay the wages bill. There are rumours of two players (Ireland and Corluka) on their way out for seven figure sums to try and prop up the finances, although it's causing big ructions between the board and Hughes.

One to watch...

I wonder if 'Sparky' Hughes is regretting leaving Blackburn yet?

Man Utd close in on Berbatov: reports
PARIS (AFP) — Dimitar Berbatov's long-anticipated move from Tottenham to Manchester United could be completed in time for the Bulgarian striker to make his debut for the English champions on Saturday.
Reports in the British press on Wednesday suggest Spurs have finally agreed to sell their prize forward after United tabled a significantly improved offer now said to be in the region of 28 million pounds.
Spurs had turned down the original bid of 20m pounds saying they were not interested in letting Berbatov go for less than 30m.
The clubs remain in dispute over the manner in which Sir Alex Ferguson has pursued the striker with Spurs' chairman Daniel Levy making an official complaint.
The Premier League are due to discuss the 'tapping up' claim that has soured relations between the two sides in the next 48 hours but intermediaries including the player's agent Emil Dantchev were working on closing the deal late Tuesday, The Times reported.
A breakthrough is said to be imminent with Berbatov apparently now only waiting for permission to travel to Manchester to finalise personal terms and undergo a medical.
Most reports suggest he will be a United player in time for Saturday's Premier League opener against Newcastle.
Berbatov's departure which follows Robbie Keane's sale to Liverpool leaves Spurs searching for a new striker and could trigger the departure to AS Roma of United's France forward Louis Saha.

28 million is a lot to pay for a 27 year-old sulk, even if he is a proven goalscorer. The only upshot is that he's already proven in the league so he won't be another Shevchenko...United, of course, can afford a 28 million-pound risk and if he's crap they still have Rooney when he gets healthy.

The USA got dumped out of Olympic football by Nigeria. 1-0, although we had a late equalizer go off the woodwork. :(

Africa has a lot of very good national sides that fly under the radar, like Cameroon, Ghana and Nigeria. I'd like to see a Brazil-Argentina semi-final.

I want Argentina to go out ASAP so we can have Messi back. It's sods law he will get injured in the final (that they lose).

Looking at City's official website earlier, I was rather excited to read a headline proclaiming 'Campbell set for KC return'. However, my excitement at the prospect of young Frazier turning out in the black and amber once more was quashed when I clicked on the link and found that the report was just saying he'd been named in the England U21 squad, who are playing in Hull next week.

Bugger.

I've only one Liverpool Jersey, so I know what I'll be wearing!

Speaking of my Reds, they are playing an absolutely terrible game against Standard Liege at the moment. Talk about beginning a campaign with a whimper...what's going on boys? Better sort it out before the weekend.

Well, the draw for the second round of the League Cup was made earlier in the evening – this is of course when the Premier League clubs who aren't competing in Europe enter the competition.

Here's the draw in full – made of course with a pointless seeding system to ensure none of the 'bigger' clubs can be drawn against one another...

Ipswich Town vs Colchester United
Coventry City vs Newcastle United
Hartlepool United vs West Bromwich Albion
West Ham United vs Macclesfield Town
Huddersfield Town vs Sheffield United
Cardiff City vs Milton Keynes Dons
Swansea City vs Hull City
Rotherham United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers
Brighton and Hove Albion vs Manchester City
Reading vs Luton Town
Blackburn Rovers vs Grimsby Town
Wigan Athletic vs Notts County
Leeds United vs Crystal Palace
Crewe Alexandra vs Bristol City
Middlesbrough vs Yeovil Town
Fulham vs Leicester City
QPR vs Carlisle United
Nottingham Forest vs Sunderland
Burnley vs Oldham Athletic
Southampton vs Birmingham City
Bolton Wanderers vs Northampton Town
Watford vs Darlington
Preston North End vs Derby County
Cheltenham Town vs Stoke City

Swansea away? Bloody hell. I was hoping against a nice enjoyable home tie.

Ooh...Reading vs. Luton. I wonder who'll win that :p

Couple of local derbies in there with Ipswich vs. Col U and Burnley vs. Oldham.

Not that I care. Silly Mickey Mouse Cup anyway :D

Now that we're a Premier League club, I demand that we play our kids in this competition. If we start with a player over the age of 21 I'm going to be sorely disappointed. :p
Do your Reserves team have a Reserves team yet? Playing them seems to be the done thing.

We've a youth team of course, but no reserve reserve side. In their absence, I reckon Hull City Ladies should be fielded instead.

The Tigresses would do us proud.

I went to my first match in ten years last night, Wolves at home to Accrington Stanley (who are they?) in the League Cup.

Wolves made hard work of it and of course the players who didn't drink lots of milk scored on their first visit to our penalty area.

Eventually, Wolves had to bring the big guns on and we managed to scrape a 3-2 win after extra time. I suppose it wasn't bad value though, 120 minutes for £12.

Anyway, it was nice to get back up there after all this time. I might even go back up again and watch a proper match. :D

Yup. I've just realised that you could well start the season with an ex-Boro strikeforce (Windass and Barmby). Wait a minute ... we're starting the season with a Boro strikeforce ! AAAAAAAGH!

Perhaps not – I'd have said that Caleb Folan would have got the nod ahead of Barmby, but we've just signed Marlon King from Wigan on loan too.

Plus, we're apparently hoping to turn Anthony Gardner's loan from Spurs into a permanent move later this week, thus freeing up a loan space. I've heard that a potential loan deal for Frazier Campbell isn't totally dead in the water, so I'll watch that one with interest...

It has been confirmed that we have signed Gardner so there is now a space available for an on loan player. Applicants to Mr. P. Brown c/o KC Stadium, Hull.

Dean Windass - espnsoccernet.com
"A Hull City legend in every possible sense, Windass was the fulcrum of the team which earned a place in the Premier League for the first ever time through the play-offs in 2007/08.
Born and bred in the City, Windass was released by City as a teenager - amazingly he was thought to be too small - and he dropped into non-league football. But his performances down the road at North Ferriby - he worked as a builder during this time - in the Northern Counties East League were being monitored and he was re-signed in 1991.

Windass stayed at City for four years but he was sold in 1995, after scoring 64 goals in 205 games, with City in dire financial trouble. Even though Norwich City made a higher bid for his services, the striker was sold to Aberdeen as they paid the £600,000 in one complete installment.

The striker, known for his fiery and robust style, bagged 25 goals in his first season in the SPL though will be most remember for picking up three red cards in one match - for the original dismissal, abusing the officials and kicking a corner flag.

Homesick for England he signed for Oxford for £475,000 but only spent a short while at the Manor Ground before joining Bradford in March 1999 for £950,000. He spent two years with the Bantams before being signed by Middlesbrough for £600,000.

Windass failed to make an impression at the Riverside and was loaned out to both Sheffield Wednesday and United before joining the Blade on a free transfer in January 2003. It would be a short stay as he moved back to Bradford at the end of the campaign.

Despite Bradford's financial woes, Windass was superb and proved to be a rare bright spot for the West Yorkshire side. He scored 60 goals in 138 starts despite already being well into his 30s.

Those money troubles forced Bradford to remove Windass from their wage bill and he agreed to return to Hull in January 2007 on loan for the remainder of the season. And what a return it was, bagging 8 Championship goals in just 15 starts to pull Hull away from the relegation zone. The prodigal had returned.

Hull secured a £150,000 permanent move for the striker, who by this time had turned 38, in the summer of 2007. And it was money well spent as he scored 11 Championship goals despite starting 29 matches and used sparingly to protect his fitness.

Windass then scored the vital opener in the first leg of the play-off semi-final at Watford. And in the final, against Bristol City, it was Windass who scored the only goal of the game with an absolute peach from the edge of the area.

The striker may find life hard going in the top flight with Hull with another year on the clock, but he has more than earned another crack at Premier League football with his hometown club."

Hmmm...interesting result. Some might speculate that a hypothetical multi-millionaire with dodgy connections in Asia might make a tidy profit from such a shock exit.

Hypothetically speaking of course.
