he he. i have a mate i play with from there. the terriers. love that badge/crest. ;)

In MLS news, I watched Chivas USA draw 2-2 with the LA Galaxy last night. Chivas' second goal came after a trip on Beckham that should have been called, but wasn't. There were a lot of bad fouls. Chivas would probably have won it but their captain had to come off for the last 15 minutes after a knock in the teeth, so they had to finish the game with 10 men, and allowed a late goal.

Right now the Galaxy are a shambles. Coach Ruud Gullit has quit, and the match coverage was dominated by chit-chat with the Galaxy owner in the booth talking about getting a new manager - while the game was going on! The announcers just had a conversation rather than calling the damned game.

Unfortunately, one of MLS' biggest problems is the quality of officiating. I've watched several games where fouls seemed to be called with no reasoning behind them at all.

On the field, it's basically what I expected from the Galaxy this year. They have Beckham, Donovan, and a whole bunch of amateurs. But for some reason, I figured that the Galaxy coaches and front office were aware of this situation and knew they'd have to weather the storm. Wrong-o. I suppose I shouldn't be that surprised, since they didn't go out to get many new players in the offseason, but I didn't expect to all fall apart so fast. I think the owners at AEG have unrealistic expectations, to say the least.

One of the Chivas defenders basically choked a Galaxy player while they were both on the ball. A straight yellow for sure, and nobody saw it. Beckham got a yellow card for...something...later in the game. Didn't see him foul anyone.

I agree - except that Chris Klein and Buddle also looked useful. Other than that the team is anonymous.

I think they are doing their best to run the team into the ground. Especially as the current rumor is that Bruce Arena is to be the next manager.

It's really bizarre behavior by the front office. One would think that they wouldn't want to create a situation where Beckham is marginalized and not playing in big games. I take Donovan's hints about maybe playing in Europe to be a sign that he doesn't like the direction they're going and not so much an indicator that there's much demand for him there. Beckham, as always, has put on a good public face, but he can't be happy about what's going on. If it gets to the point that he asks to leave, then the team will be humiliated.

I kind of took the Gullit hiring as a sop to Beckham with the idea of bringing in a famous star with European experience. I don't think he was any more or less of a coach than most American coaches, but (1) MLS is drastically different from the environment that European players and coaches are used to working in, and (2) his star power doesn't mean as much here, since most casual soccer fans in the U.S. have no idea who Ruud Gullit is or what he's done as a player.

Liverpool need to put a few good goals past Sunderland tomorrow if they want to be taken seriously as a contender in the league. I want to see the beginnings of a deadly strike partnership forming.

They shouldn't have gotten too excited about Gullit - from what I heard he came to the Galaxy for two reasons: 1) relocating to California, and 2) he couldn't get a job in Europe.

To be fair, such a booking could have been or dissent or something – no foul required there.

Well, he got booked after a tackle, but it was nowhere near a foul much less a card. He did "discuss" with the ref quite a bit over the course of the game though, so he might have just been booked for dissent.

Nervous, Jaffa? Your destiny awaits...

the Arsenal are in fine form, at least in the first half, against WBA. Nasri already looks like a good signing. He's been very active, and he's not afraid to shoot at goal.

Did you actually watch the game?

They were in pretty poor form, the only thing that saved them was the result.

Yes, I did. Did you? ;)

I was commenting on the first half though, and in retrospect I should have said that they were in the same form as last year i.e. loads of possession, lots of shots, and no goals.

In propper news, Carlisle are top of League One... For what it worth after 2 games. At least we've scored bucket loads. 7 in two league games.

The horrible Leeds lost at home as well. Spot on.

AAAAAAAAAAH! Keane got in Torres' way to block a sure goal...and now he's subbed out.

El Nino gives us all three points with an excellent individual effort, but he and Keane need to work on their partnership...Liverpool looked flat much of the game.

Sunderland started brightly and played well much of the game, but the chances were few and far between. A bit of a dour match, except for the Torres goal and Alonso almost scoring from the halfway line.

What a day. Fantastic result for the Tigers.

However, that is not good enough to stay up, they need to improve throughout the season and are still short on 1 or 2 players which will make the difference.

Good start so far.

Bring on Blackburn.

So how was your first taste of Premiership football?
We struggled to find our feet in the first half and our opponents were much quicker on the ball than we were, and it's fair to say that – despite the score being level – Fulham were the better side.

It was a much improved second half from our point of view though, and on balance we deserved the points. Geovanni looks a fantastic acquisition and – while we're under no illusions that it's going to be a long, hard season – today we looked nothing like the whipping boys all the experts have been describing us as. Of course, there will be far, far tougher games than the one we watched this afternoon but if we play as well as we can do then we have a fighting chance of survival. Especially if Stoke carry on as they've started. :p

Overall, suffice to say I'm very, very proud of the boys.

PS. Well done Carlisle, too.
