With the retirement of seven-time Pro Bowl defensive end Michael Strahan, the job of repeating as Super Bowl champions was going to be difficult for the New York Giants.

Now it might be near impossible with the news that fellow Pro Bowl defensive end Osi Umenyiora is out for the season with a knee injury.

An MRI on Sunday showed that Umenyiora tore the lateral meniscus in his left knee in a preseason game against the archrival Jets on Saturday night.

The two-time Pro Bowler will have surgery on Tuesday at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. The recovery period is about four months.

That's a big loss for the Giants..Strahan said he would come out of retirement for 8 million to play this season
Strahan, the franchise's all-time leader in sacks, would consider coming out of retirement, the New York Daily News reported Monday.

Citing an unnamed source, the newspaper reported the 36-year-old Strahan, who retired in the offseason after helping the Giants win the Super Bowl, would return to the team if offered an $8 million contract for this season.

Strahan has already signed a contract with Fox Sports. Could he get out of that if he wanted to. They wonder if his mind is into coming back at this point.

Personally,I don't think he's Favre-ing it and unretiring..I think he's done.Still a big hole for the Giants to fill tho.

I agree, I think he is happy with his ring and really has no real desire to play again.

Shawne Merriman is an idiot.

SAN DIEGO -- The surgeon's knife can wait. Shawne Merriman is going to play football, two torn knee ligaments and all.

A day after visiting a fourth doctor, the San Diego Chargers outside linebacker decided Wednesday to play this season rather than have his damaged left knee repaired now.

"To be as simple as possible, I just want to play football," Merriman said. "That's what it comes down to. I know what's on the table, I know what's on the line. I put a lot of work in this and I want to play."

Merriman said late last week that he has tears in both the posterior cruciate and lateral collateral ligaments in his left knee, which he hurt in a game at Tennessee in December. He spent several days seeking outside opinions. He returned Tuesday after seeing a doctor in Miami.

If he plants his foot the wrong way or gets hit the wrong way/chop blocked, his knee could get shredded and his career would be over.

Now it seems like the Chargers don't give a **** because Merriman is in the last year of his contract. If he was in the beginning of a multi-year deal, you can bet they'd force him to have surgery.

He's such an idiot though. He hurt his knee in DECEMBER. He could have had surgery the week after the Chargers were eliminated from the playoffs, and he would have been ready to go by now!

I'm in for the MR fantasy football.

Go Niners....

I agree... but I doubt this year will be it. A 3-way QB competition two weeks into camp isn't really the sign of a confident team... still I'm hoping they'll be slightly more entertaining to watch than last year since Martz, faults aside, does tend to call an offense that does more than run, run, pass, punt. I swear the Niners got more sideways yards last year than forward ones.

I'm looking forward to the new NFL.com Gamepass HD for those of us outside the US. The demo looks awesome on the 24" iMac and they've improved it so you can watch up to 4 games at a time. Bliss... 4 football games on the Mac and 2 on TV... when I started following the NFL from the UK, it was a dodgy longwave radio tuned into the American Forces station!

Going against the advice of four doctors and putting your career on the line? The roids really messed with his wiring..

Yeah, especially when you're only 24 years old. I could maybe understand an aging veteran who just wants to play one more year trying to get by without surgery, but a 24-year old pro bowler just entering the prime of his career? ****ing stupid.

It will be interesting to see how Eli handles himself this year. Lets hope he keeps the confidence up.

Well, the Skins just looked awful. How many times can you run on first, run on second, fail to get the first down, and be forced to throw on third? A 10 year old could have predicted the 'skins' plays.

On the other hand, their D played pretty well after some initial missteps. The Giant's offense really didn't show much after the first couple of drives. Neither team really looked all that sharp, but as between the two, it's clear the redskins have a LOT more work to do!

Yeah, the Skins have looked that way, what, since 1992? It got even worse when Snyder bought the team. He should be playing Fantasy and let a real X's and O's guy run the team. He has to be one of the worst owners in the entire league. Sure, he spends money but he spends it foolishly and on has-been players. He's sort of a cross between the 00's Yankees (they spend money) and the 80's Raiders (has-been players).

And as for the Giants, they seem to start slow every single year but hit their stride mid-season. I wouldn't worry about them if you are a Giant's fan. They will win the division and go to the second round of the playoffs.

As a Jet fan, it's been quite some time since I had anything to look forward to. Let the Farve era begin!

I've never understood the fascination with Farve. Everyone says that he is great and a Hall-of-Famer but I have no idea why. He is too reckless, makes poor choices, and throws waaay too many interceptions -- always at a critical time of the game.

I think it's funny that the first team they play has their old QB starting. I'd sort of like to see the Dolphins win for that reason alone.
