2008/9 COLLEGE Football Thread

I love this time of year! All the trash talk is awesome. :)

Not many Buckeyes around here, though. Should be a good game. They have a good pass defense, which is our offensive strength, and we have a good run defense, which is their offensive strength. We'll see how it plays out. I'd guess we'll have more fans in Tempe - Longhorns tend to travel well.

Like I said earlier, lucky for us we get to see this decided on the field. And I stand by my assertion that Utah would be deserving of the National Title if they remain unbeaten after the sugar bowl. Go ahead and prove to me why they shouldn't be. Without claiming that they have a weaker conference, if Utah beats Bama, they will have knocked off a top end Pac 10 team (BCS conference) and a top end SEC team (also BCS conference, arguably the best one). And while doing that, they will have beaten the winningest team in college football history on their home field, and two top 15 teams from their own conference.

The BCS is not about crowning the best team, it's about crowning the team that the reporters and coaches "Think" is best. If we want to see who's really best, a playoff is necessary. Each team would have to put up or shut up, the ACC would be left out entirely this year. That's why I make the claim.

And to respond to MacDawg's statement about Utah not being able to remain unbeaten in the ACC: You may be right, I don't think so, but even if you are, they could lose a game to anyone in the ACC and still have a shot at the title. That's right, if Utah were in the ACC (or any other BCS conference for that matter, they could lose to Duke, Texas A&M, Louisville, Indiana, Washington, Mississippi State, or any other bottom feeder team and still play in the National Title game.

That's why this whole system is utter crap!

Agree with you that the whole system is crap. And you are probably right that Utah would be treated different in another conference. Certainly, if Utah was in the Pac-10 they would be playing for the title if they were still undefeated.

I made my comment feeling bad for you man. I get sick of having to defend my school, so I'm sure you do the same.

I'm glad you guys have the chance to prove yourselves. I will change my mind on Utah if they keep it close.

I think Ohio State will put up a better game than they did with USC
Their team was in total disarray when they played... they have improved

Still... I think Texas is a juggernaut and could easily be playing for it all ;)
every play counts man... and you gotta tackle that dude

I'd say that the SEC had a typical year. No undefeated teams and sent a team to the National Title game. Remember when LSU got in the title game with two losses?

Maybe you'd like to think that the SEC had a down year because the Bulldogs failed to impress, but I think that Alabama and Florida held the national media's attention just fine even without them, and the SEC looks as good this year as they ever have as long as I've been paying attention.

Coulda woulda shoulda. Tech makes a career out of wrecking other people's seasons. They've done it to us before. :)

For some reason I came into this season thinking we'd be mediocre, and I just can't shake that initial impression. We're good, but I'm not sure our defense is good enough to justify calling us a NC caliber team. Of course, OU's D is worse than ours, so there you go. ;)

Then you haven't been paying attention very long then ;)

Tennessee was down... they won the East last year
Auburn was down... they were favored to win the West
LSU was down... they won the Championship last year

Yes... Bama and Florida were and are highly ranked... but overall... down

Dawgs failed to impress? They will likely still win their 10th game in Orlando
No, they did not live up to all expectations...
but they lost to Bama/Florida and a rivalry game to a good Tech team

I am disappointed, but not unrealisitic... I felt all along they would lose 2
I didn't count on the Tech game :(

You're right Dawg, I haven't. There's not much incentive to unless Utah has a shot at the BCS. The SEC generally doesn't have much impact on Utah, which is unfortunate since the only reason that's the case is that Utah won't play anyone in the SEC unless they are in the BCS.

It sounds like you're thinking of the JMU-Villanova game, where JMU won on a hail mary that bounced of a helmet into the arms of the JMU receiver.

JMU beat Richmond on a punt return for a TD in a tie game with one second left on the clock. :rolleyes:

Throw in the JMU's win over Appalachian State where they were down 21-0 at the half before being sparked by a 99-yard kickoff return for a TD to open the second half, and JMU has managed a blessed season.

It will of course come to an end when the Spiders take the rematch on December 19th. :D

YOU'RE PLAYING ALABAMA. Why are you complaining? Show the country what you can do against a solid SEC team (although they are vastly overrated at number 4) and we'll go from there. Kill them, schedule some better opponents, and you'll have a legitimate argument for being in the title game next time.

I hope you kill Alabama.

BTW, the NCG should be OU vs. USC, they just didn't want a repeat of a few years ago.

Thanks, Comes more from being a Guns N Roses fan, but that belongs in a different forum :p

and let's just not go there, please LOL. I only pay attention to the QB's when they are delivering on the field. Looks are secondary:D

That year would've been an awesome game if Auburn wasn't screwed out of it by Oklahoma taking their spot. That was the BCS's all time greatest f*** up.
