Wow! There have been more comments in the last two days than in the last two months! ...well, maybe not, but it seems like it!
I just caught up on the last three or four pages, and the Utah discussion. Since I'm a fellow non-BCSer I have to weigh in.
I think one of the biggest components of this game that not many people talk about is the fact that this is going to basically be a Home game for Alabama. I hope Utah fans travel, but that's a long way to go in a recession. Glendale would have been a much more realistic choice for travel.
I think Utah is going to have its hands full with Alabama this year. I don't think this year's Utah team is as good as 2004. Given the opportunity I think that '04 team could have ran with any team in the country. This year's team is strong, definitely, but even though I'll be cheering for Utah until my lungs explode, I just can't seem to give them the win.
Seriously, I really hope Utah wins. I really do. Because if they lose then they're "just another mid-major that can't run with the big boys", like Hawaii. We need another win for us so that the door doesn't shut on us even more.
Everything Boise State accomplished for the non-BCS in 2006 (and they accomplished a LOT) was all but taken away by Hawaii in '07. Honestly I feel Boise State is still paying for that. So now comes Utah's chance to up the ante for us "little guys", so I hope they come away with the win.
The last thing I want to comment on is in regards to SLC's idea that the MWC is such a great conference. I'm sorry, but I just can't get behind this. Now don't get me wrong, the MWC is having a STELLAR year, but when was the last time three MWC teams have finished in the top 25? It's never happened.
2002: TCU #23
2003: Utah #21, TCU #25
2004: Utah #4
2005: TCU #11
2006: BYU #16, TCU #22
2007: BYU #14
There have been some great finishes ('04 Utah, '05 TCU) but for the most part the MWC teams have been top 25 bottom dwellers.
Again, don't get me wrong. I think the MWC is a great conference, but it's just not as dominant as MWC fans like to think it is because they have one good year.
Now for some Boise State love.
What SLC thought was ludicrous, I couldn't help but smile. Of course I'm referring to the Bowl Selection Show announcers comparing Utah to Boise State. Heh heh.
But what is so wrong with that statement? Utah was the first BCS Buster, and they're the first to go twice, but I think you could argue that Boise State has been the most consistent dominating non-BCS team in the last six years.
2002:
#15 - Boise State
#23 - TCU
#24 - Marshall
2003:
#10 - Miami (OH)
#16 - Boise State
#21 - Utah
#23 - Bowling Green
#25 - TCU
2004:
#4 - Utah
#6 - Louisville (pre-Big East)
#12 - Boise State
#22 - Fresno State
2005:
#11 - TCU
2006:
#5 - Boise State (one 1st place vote)
#16 - BYU
#22 - TCU
2007:
#14 - BYU
#19 - Hawaii
Only TCU and Boise State have ended the season ranked four out of the the last six years, but Boise State has been much higher up the charts. Utah finished #4, whereas Boise finished #5, but Boise received a first-place vote.
So again I ask: What is so wrong with having Utah compared to Boise State?
Okay, I'm done. I doubt anyone will actually read this because it's so long, but there you have it.
Go Sooners!
EDIT:
Just saw this and wanted to add it. The Poinsettia Bowl pitting Boise State against TCU is the
fourth highest ranked bowl behind the Fiesta Bowl, but in front of the Sugar Bowl.

Go Broncos!
