Marlins ballpark agreement reached
The Marlins, Miami-Dade County, the city of Miami and Major League Baseball reached agreement late Friday to finance a $515 million ballpark at the site of the Orange Bowl, according to a source.

The agreement was not released, but was expected to be distributed to county and city commissioners, who will need to approve it. The city has scheduled a special commission meeting to consider the deal at 9 a.m. Thursday; the county commission is to meet at 1 p.m. that day.

The deal calls for the county and city to contribute $360 million mainly in tourist taxes and a $50 million general obligation bond Miami-Dade voters approved in 2004 to renovate the Orange Bowl, but which will instead be moved to the ballpark project. The Marlins are to contribute $155 million.
The Marlins hope to break ground by year's end with the stadium opening by April 2011, when the team would be renamed the Miami Marlins.

haha

But run the way he's capable of running? That, regrettably, is not going to happen here. Buchholz said he raced against a Phillies prospect who was "talking smack" about pitchers, but won't engage Jacoby Ellsbury in a footrace between arguably the two fastest players in the organization. Buchholz was a former sprint champion in high school.

"I've already been told," he said, "that I'll be fined if I race against Ellsbury."

37,000 seat retractible roof is just what they need there. How many rain delays do they get on a daily basis?

not that much (between 5-10 a season), it's more about the threat of rain that keeps a bunch of fans away. 3-6 pm is prime raining hours in south florida at least during the wet season (april-october), and around here, rain comes and goes as it pleases (as in sunny and rain, 5 minute showers, etc). when alot of people (many from up north where these rules aren't in play), see rain in the day, they don't want to go to the game, with that chance of a rain storm that night, ruining the game. so knowing that a roof is up there to not spoil the game will bring a couple thousand more fans out.

From what I understand isn't the Rose Orange Bowl off the beaten path from downtown Miami.

the rose bowl is in la. and about the orange bowl, yeah, it's not far from downtown. but the problem is the parking and such is going to be such a nightmare with the little space they have (and no underground structures either due to the area's very low water table). and public transportation isn't a high priority in south florida and that will be the case for the near future, as there are no projects planned, yet there are I-95 projects in the works.

Opps got my bowls mixed up. I was thinking the right one.:p

I thought I remember hearing something about the Marlins not liking the location of the Orange bowl for a stadium that they wanted it downtown.

actually, that's been one of the biggest issues in this stadium nonsense. i forget the details at the moment, but the city didn't want them to go downtown for some stupid reason, and i think it cost them a good 3 years of stadium building. and the only reason why they are even building it now is because um is moving out of the orange bowl, rendering that stadium obsolete.

So apparently Jacoby Ellsbury likes to lift tires :p And he's also trying to become the next Tom Brady, posing in magazines.

Red Sox rookie phenom Jacoby Ellsbury (above) had the kind of season little boys dream about and the kind of World Series Red Sox Nation will be bragging about for years to come. And the man who stole a base and won the country a free taco seems to be adjusting to life as a big leaguer. "As a Little Leaguer, you put yourself in those situations, this ultimate state," the 24-year-old says in a several-page spread in the new edition of Men's Vogue, which hits stands tomorrow. "It was a dream come true," No. 46 says of hitting .438 in the Series.

For a guy who started out his season in Double A, it isn't lost on Ellsbury that he needed to spend this off-season working out and getting ready to report to camp later this week. "I don't want to get lackadaisical," Ellsbury, the first Navajo to play major league ball, tells writer Hudson Morgan. "I'm going to get better, and the awards and the individual aspects will take care of themselves."

The Oregon-bred player's grace under fire isn't lost on Sox skipper Terry Francona. "We put him in some pretty important situations, and he competed, and he didn't back down," Francona tells the magazine. "Usually we can live and die by the home run, but he brought speed that we hadn't seen. He can fly." Ellsbury and his girl- friend, 23-year-old Kelsey Hawkins, have allowed a few trappings of success. He drives a new blue Escalade, uses an iPhone, and has a closet packed with new sneakers. As for what he would be doing if he wasn't gearing up for baseball: "The NFL," he says. "Wide receiver." Seriously? "Or the NBA."

Yawn. Please post stuff about baseball, okay?

sorry, no baseball in this post.

first of all, i heard the marlins may be moving spring training to homestead, fl (the one that whacked during andrew). that's about a 2 hour drive south from their current st home in jupiter in north palm beach county. alot of people in palm beach and northward to vero aren't really happy about that move as it pretty much takes the marlins out of their market. expect a new influx of yankees/sox/mets fans around here if that happens.

and second, boss jr. says that baseball is being judged too harshly on the roids compared to football that is getting little scrutiny whatsoever. like merriman, he pretty much got away with taking roids (expect his suspension). if he was in baseball, they would be talking about this for quite a while. and there was a big roids scandal in football involving the panthers a few years back, and nobody really talked about it.

It's a lot of money to spend for new chairs for fans not to sit in. I'm getting flashbacks of empty seats at Montreal's Olympic Stadium. It's also a lot to spend on a team that's determined not to sell tickets or spend money on players.

Everyone is going to be chasing the Tigers this year. That lineup is scary! Just need the bullpen to be halfway decent.

How would you like to be an opposing pitcher?!

I think they will be good, but I think people are overhyping Detroit's offense.

Magglio had a career year.

Polanco had a career year.

Carlos Guillen wasn't really hurt (that can't last, even at 1B)

Granderson struck out almost 3x as many times as he walked. Not really what you want in a leadoff batter. I'd be batting him later in the lineup but then who leads off?

Sheffield is going to be 40 in November.

Pudge will be 37 in November.

Miguel Cabrera is a stud.

Will they be good? Yes, possibly very good.

But there are some significant question marks there in their lineup.
