Baseball mourns Buzzie Bavasi

Executive with Dodgers, Angels, Padres passes away at 93
By Tom Singer / MLB.com

Emil Joseph "Buzzie" Bavasi, the bold and often abrasive executive with three Major League franchises on both coasts and the patriarch of a family that continues to have an impact on big league baseball, has passed away at 93.
Bavasi died of natural causes following a brief illness in San Diego.

From the moment he became traveling secretary of the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1939 until he bowed out as executive vice president of the California Angels following the 1984 season, Bavasi earned a reputation as an imaginative, media-savvy front-office maven.

Perhaps best remembered for building the Dodgers' first World Series championship team in 1955, the only title of the team's long tenure in Brooklyn, Bavasi was also behind the California Angels' first two division titles in 1979 and 1982.

His friends and admirers in and out of baseball are legion.

"All of baseball today mourns the passing of one of its giants, Buzzie Bavasi," Commissioner Bud Selig said. "Buzzie was one of the game's greatest front-office executives during a period that spanned parts of six different decades.

he actually traded sammy sosa from the rangers in his days of owning the team.;)

but zito is horrid now, 0-6 with a era over 7. what happened to him? was it the wrong side of the bay? drug related issues? just shocking that a six mile move did this much to him.

actually, after checking his stats, it looks like outside of a couple of years, zito was more or less overhyped as a pitcher, and is probably a #3 or #4. but he's been awful since going to the nice part of town.

when he traded sammy he was a light hitting scrawny little outfielder.... he did have some power but he wasn't juiced up yet. i believe he got lance johnson for him... right?

now kicking myself for benching hudson...3 hit shutout.

should i try to trade hudson now to get something really good before his stock drops? or should i just hang on to him?

Make it eight. Good game against the Dodgers last night.

Yup. But Arizona is proving tough to catch. They've been playing .700 ball for a month. The big surprise in this division is San Diego -- they seem to be developing a death-grip on the cellar.

Haha.. best managing decision ever. I benched Carlos Silva today :D

Will it be nationally televised?

I'm a Mets fan in Florida. MLB.TV is wonderful.

Shaping up to be a pitcher's duel through 3. Only run was Santana sac-bunting Castillo to 2nd followed by Reyes lining him in. 4 K's for Santana, 3 for Haren.

Will it be nationally televised?

Fortunately, the Dodgers will not be facing Santana next week. I will be at Monday's game against the Mets.

It's on TBS. Not a bad haul for my fantasy team yesterday. Finally got out of last place, and I will move up another today. I guess having 4 starters (Halladay, Lester, Kazmir, and Santana) will do that. 6 teams leagues ftw!

Fun game against the Mets last night. Furcal lead off with a HR and made an amazing throw to first from deep in the hole at short. First major league HR from Blake DeWitt. Great play all-around from this kid, who was in AA last year and didn't figure to be playing in the majors at all. OTOH, Andruw Jones is still the picture of futility. He's getting booed every time his name is announced (I never boo the home team, but in Jones' case it's hard to resist.). Overall, nice to be in a stadium full of happy Dodger fans again. Now three games back of Arizona!

It really was a great series. Obviously I preferred this afternoon's game to the first two, but the Dodgers played well during and earned their two wins.

zito is 0-7 now with a 6.95 era. yuck. i think he's going to lose 20 games.

and bringing up zito, only huddy of the big three in oakland is actually making much of his post a's days. mulder is hurt and zito is...well, you know.
