Well... thanks to a 5 game skid by the Phillies and the Mets clawing their way back to .500, we're only 3.5 games back at this point. At least there's hope they will win the game I'm in town for... I hate the Giants.

Also, I really love the pitchers handing off the ball to their relievers... staying on the mound until they are out there. I think it's classy, something the Mets need right now.

lol, mets.

NEW YORK -- Felix Hernandez hit the first grand slam by an American League pitcher in 37 years when the Seattle Mariners ace connected Monday night off Johan Santana of the New York Mets.

With two outs in the second inning, Hernandez took a healthy hack at Santana's first pitch and drove an opposite-field shot over the right-center fence to give Seattle a 4-0 lead.

It was the first home run by a pitcher in Mariners history, and the first slam by an AL hurler since Cleveland's Steve Dunning connected off Oakland's Diego Segui on May 11, 1971, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

That was two years before the American League began playing with a designated hitter -- and six years before the Mariners' expansion season of 1977.

The last National League pitcher to hit a grand slam also did it at Shea Stadium. Dontrelle Willis, then with Florida, accomplished the feat against the Mets on July 7, 2006.

The 6-foot-3, 230-pound Hernandez clapped his hands while rounding first base as the ball cleared the fence. The home run came in his first plate appearance of the season and made him 2-for-9 with five RBIs and six strikeouts in his major league career.

Just before Hernandez connected, an error by Mets third baseman David Wright extended the inning.

His next time up, Hernandez dropped down a successful sacrifice bunt.

Interestingly, Mariners pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre also hit a grand slam while pitching in the big leagues. He did it on July 20, 1965, an inside-the-park slam at Yankee Stadium against Boston.

ESPN

Apparently it happened right after David Wright bobbled a ball that should have been the 3rd out in the inning.

BTW, did anyone see C.C. Sabathia's 440ft home run the other day?

take that, hank!!! pitchers are not just for pitching. and the muts still stink. at least that gives me comfort since we suck...

got us a good old-fashioned pitchers duel at Fenway tonight

through 5 innings:

Beckett: 5.0, 3H, 0R, 0BB, 6K
Haren: 5.0, 1H, 0R, 1BB, 3K

Cito's back! It's like the early 90's all over again. I hope he can make some progress and turn this team around. Another set of back-to-back World Series wins would be nice.........

If he can't turn this team around, I think Ricciardi will have to be fired by the end of the season. Frankly, I think he should have been fired along with Gibbons.

Go Jays....

0-11 loss tonight. I'm really only going to one game now while I'm up there. Mess.

Firing Wille definitely helped to turn the team around! In fact, they turned around so much that they did a complete 360! :p

Santana, over rated or just on a bad team? Would he be having a better year with the Yankees or Red Sox or Twins, or is he just not that good. Was he worth the money? Are the Yankees and Red Sox better off without him in the long run?

Santana is on a bad team. Alas, he has always been a fly ball pitcher.

it's both. the mets are really awful, and i think the new york media overrated him as the mets savior when he got traded. he's good, but he's not the greatest thing since sliced bread and the mets overpaid for him big time.

this reminds me, colin cowherd said yesterday that of the last 10 new york big pitching deals, 7 of them have been complete busts.

It's a bit of both, really. I won't deny that his Win/Loss column has been affected significantly by the other 8 Mess players on the field with him, but he is having a rather poor season as well.

Let's go to the stats, taking the average from 2003 (first full season) to 2007:

Average hits against: 166.4
So far this year: 103

Average homers given up: 24
So far this year: 14

Average ER 69.4
So far this year: 35

Already on track to beat all of these negative numbers significantly.

Average K's: 230.4
So far this year: 95

Average walks: 49
So far this year: 28

Not awful, but both still looking bad.

Considering he still has 3 or 4 starts before the break, even without help from the Mess, he's having a poor year.

So uh, Kevin Cash just hit a ****ing 3 run home run.. Kevin ****ing Cash.. the career .179 hitter hits his 8th homer of his career...
