At the deadline, the Dodgers are apparently taking a look at Mark Grudzielanek and Mark Loretta to shore up the middle infield, and are also working with San Diego on a Greg Maddux deal.

I feel like the Dodgers just need a little something to put them up in their division and get them into the post season. That trade could do it.

A source close to the three-way negotiations involving Manny Ramirez says the deal is close to dead. Florida has reportedly asked Boston for a cash outlay beyond the $7M to cover Ramirez's contract, in addition to two prospects. That essentially would add up to the Red Sox trading Ramirez, $9M and two prospects for Jason Bay.

Not a bad combo right there.

I assume it would be either/or of Grudzielanek and Loretta, but both could come rather cheaply if they picked up their salaries plus a low minors prospect or two. They could get both if they traded Barroa and demoted Maza. Supposedly the sticking point on Maddux is money, though I find that hard to believe, since the balance of his contract is only about $3 million.

As the Red Sox, Marlins and Pirates continue to try to piece together their Manny Ramirez-Jason Bay blockbuster, the buzz around the sport is that the Pirates are still talking to other teams about Bay.
The latest team to make a run is Toronto. It seems doubtful that the Blue Jays would give up the three-prospect package Pittsburgh is looking for, almost certainly starting with outfield phenom Travis Snider. But Toronto and Pittsburgh were still talking as of Thursday afternoon.

If Ramirez does go to Florida, it would have to rank as one of the strangest baseball deals of all time, if only because his annual salary is nearly as much as the rest of the Marlins team, combined.

From the Globe's Gordon Edes (2:19 p.m.): Less than 2 hours before the trading deadline, the Red Sox were still trying to make this 3-way deal with the Pirates and Marlins work, but as one source said, "They're not going to be stupid about it." At the moment, the deal would require the Red Sox to include prospects as well as Manny Ramirez and the $7 million remaining on his 2008 salary, a price the Sox appear unwilling to pay at this time. Another industry source said within the last 10 minutes that he thinks talks will go down to the 4 p.m. deadline.

**** that. the only way i'd trade manny AND prospects (marlins reportedly asked for buchholz) is if hanley ramirez is on a plane to boston.

Yeah, I don't see why anyone would honestly want him. Manny's all about Manny.

Maybe Greg Maddux isn't going to wind up back with the Dodgers after all. The Dodgers and Padres have always been uncomfortable making deals with each other. And with 90 minutes left until the deadline, they've been unable to reach agreement on a trade that would send Maddux back to L.A., the only team he has told the Padres to which he would approve a deal.
One source familiar with the two clubs' discussions say the $3.3 million remaining on Maddux's salary this year is not a major issue. But the Dodgers have been unwilling to make anything beyond a modest offer as they're aware they're the only taker.

That would be a funny ending, since they traded away Hanley Ramirez in the Mike Lowell trade, right?

Yeah, the Sox traded Hanley Ramirez and Anibel Sanchez to the Marlins before the 06 season for Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell. Definitely one of those trades that worked out great for both teams. I'd love to get Hanley back though ;)

Ken Griffey Jr. approved a trade from the Cincinnati Reds to the Chicago White Sox on Thursday, paving the way for the future Hall of Famer to pursue a spot in the World Series for the first time in his career.

The deal is subject to the approval of commissioner Bud Selig's office, said a baseball source, who added that MLB approval is expected to be a "rubber stamp.''
The Reds will receive pitcher Nick Masset and infielder Danny Richar in return.

More updates:

With the three-way deal between the Pirates, Red Sox, and Marlins falling through, an MLB.com source says that the Rays are going to acquire right-handed hitting outfielder Jason Bay for Minor League prospects including shortstop Reid Brignac and right-hander Jeff Niemann. The Rays have not confirmed the deal.

From the Globe's Nick Cafardo (3:14 p.m.): "Red Sox sources told me moments ago that this three-way deal now seems unlikely and are exploring other avenues. There's not a lot of optimism on the Red Sox side about a deal getting done."

The deadline has passed, and no big trades happened.

Theo is a ****tard. Nice job doing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.

Gordon Edes of the Boston Globe is reporting that the Sox have traded Manny Ramirez to the Dodgers in a 3-team deal with the Pirates. Sox reportedly have landed Jason Bay.

Details of the Manny Trade:

To Boston: Jason Bay (from Pitt)
To LA: Manny Ramirez + $7 million (from Boston)
To Pitt: Craig Hansen, Brandon Moss (from Boston), Bryan Morris, Andy LaRoche (from LA)

Also, Manny's options for 2009 and 2010 have been canceled, so he'll be a free agent this off season.

ugh.

Worst trade ever.

OMG.

Sox are done for the season. And Craig Hansen? Had to throw him in too?

Talk about Red Sox west..Where is he going to play is a very good question...

We don't have many of those former Red Sox players anymore. Closer to Yankees West now, if that's anything to boast about.

I would guess he would play in place of either Pierre or Jones

Five starting outfielders: Kemp, Jones, Pierre, Ethier, and now Ramirez.

Jones is a boat anchor, but at $18 million a year, they can't afford to bench him permanently, and of course he's still excellent defensively. Pierre is valuable for his speed and leading off. Ethier is quality all around, Kemp is really developing into something great... this is going to be tough.

EDIT: The more I look at this, the more it seems like Pierre has to be the odd man out. Ramirez is probably going to play his comfort spot in left, and Kemp or Jones are likely to play in center. AFAIK, Pierre has never played right, and he doesn't have the arm for it anyway. Other shoes to drop soon, I'd guess.

eh, what?

Have you seen Hansen pitch? He couldn't hit the plate if it was the size of ****ing Rhode Island.

The Sox gave up a crappy reliever and a 5th outfielder who would never get to play in Boston to move a 36-year old guy who can't really play OF anymore to get a younger all-star OF who's locked up through next season at just over $7 million. Sounds like a good trade to me.

Bay is great value for a guy who's going to be a free agent at the end of the year. Hansen and Moss were expendable.

The only thing that sucks is Theo couldn't do another deal to get more bullpen help.
