Calling a baseball game well never seemed like such a difficult thing to me. One person in the booth (not two and certainly not three) who knows the game, speaks clearly, pays attention to the action on the field, talks directly to the audience, and doesn't blabber just for the sake of it. I don't know where the networks got the idea that baseball fans really want to hear three guys chattering endlessly to each other like we're not even there, making inane remarks, repetitious observations, and bad jokes, while missing the action besides.

Pardon the slight hijack, but seriously... how does he keep getting work? I thought he was bad calling NFL, but he's even worse with baseball. /shudder
What really irks me about Buck, is that he doesn't even watch baseball unless he's calling a game. If you don't like the sport, don't work in it you ****head.
I think the most recent worst announcers were the ones TBS had doing the early playoff rounds last year  Dreadful is an understatement...

Didn't they get local guys from a bunch of teams and move them around? I know Don Orsillo was working one of the NL division series...

i think two people in the booth is fine, but other than that, you're spot on. i can put up with brief chatter between the pbp and color guy if the game is a stinker. but here's the point: tell the story on the field, this isn't tea time with your buddies.

These were the duos from last year's TBS games
Tony Gwynn
Chip Caray

Steve Stone
Ted Robinson

Dick Stockton
Bob Brenley

Don Orsillo
Joe Simpson

What a group..Dick Stockton??I mean honestly. He called the Bird led Celtic's win over the Lakers in the old Garden.Orsillo w/o Remy, not pretty. Steve Stone, was beyond terrible..

Two can work if it's the right two. More often than not, two guys just results in twice as much pointless chatter. Most of these broadcasting teams make me think of two dudes hanging out on the living room sofa, sort of half watching the game and half drinking beer and BS-ing. If that's the vibe they're going for, they got it.

Another dinger for Manny today, 4-5 with 3 RBIs.

A color commentator only works if he actually knows a thing or too about baseball. I like some of the former players doing games. They give an insight that nobody else can.

Nice win by the Yankees today.

RIP Skip Caray

tragic news...skip caray is dead. makes that game i taped last year even more valuable...tribute coming shortly. as a long time braves fan, i can't imagine braves games without skip caray, a voice of the braves for many years...

Hey! I didn't notice there was a MLB thread here!

I love the Twins! Who else does? My favorite player is probably Justin Morneau or Denard Span.

Another Twins fan here.

It sure has been a great year to be a Twins fan too, expectations were so low but only 2 months left and in first place. It does not get much better.

TSE yes there is a baseball thread and it is very fluid. be prepared to go back a page or two just to keep up! lol.

I like jon miller and can tolerate joe morgan. i hate tim mccarver.

r.i.p. to mr carey

Jon Miller knows noting about the teams he broadcasts, he flies in to town the same day and than leaves right after the game. At least McCarver knows about the teams.

but then again, jon miller does giants games most of the week, unlike mccarver who is, as far as i know, does not do other games.

McCarver used to be a Yankees and Mets broadcaster. As well as a few other teams I believe. Phillies from 1980 to 1982, Mets from 1983 to 1998, Yankees from 1999 to 2001, and Giants in 2002.

Miller doesn't know much about the other teams but the Giants. If he is going to do the game of the week I would think he would want to know about the teams.

From what I have heard ESPN is going to change Sunday night crews soon.

i'm going to say some words about skip. he was one of the best, and funniest announcers you will ever hear, and always made a bad day better with his disregard of political correctness for his dry humor while calling a great game. it's still a shock that he's gone nearly a whole day now. and i think losing skip caray marked the end of an era in braves baseball (the superstation/14 division titles era). i still don't think his son measures up to skip, chip's too chatty.

and i knew that he wasn't doing as well healthwise, but i didn't know that it was that bad. it's like a part of you died as that voice that kept you grounded and gave you a voice in the confusing mtv realm of high school is now gone.

Red Sox lefthander Jon Lester has been named the American League Pitcher of the Month for July, according to a press release from the team. It is the first monthly honor of his career.

The 24-year-old Lester went 3-0 with a 2.05 ERA and 28 strikeouts in 30.2 innings in July, allowing seven earned runs on 31 hits and six walks for the month.

On July 3, Lester pitched a complete-game shutout against the New York Yankees in his first game ever at Yankee Stadium, striking out eight.

In his 23 starts this season, Lester is 10-3 with a 3.14 ERA and 101 strikeouts in 146.1 innings. He has not taken a loss at Fenway Park since April 9th.

Carl Pavano, who, yes thats right. Pavano might pitch before the seasons out says Girardi.

hahaha, Pavano still plays baseball? wtf happened to him anyways?
He had Tommy John surgery last spring. He is on his 4th year of his contract now. He is supposedly throwing or will start in the minors.

In other news Giambi shaved the stash.

ARLINGTON, Texas -- New York Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain will be examined by noted orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews on Wednesday after undergoing an MRI on his ailing right shoulder.

Chamberlain returned to New York for tests on his shoulder Tuesday. The team said before its game against the Texas Rangers that it would not reveal the results of the MRI exam until Chamberlain is seen by Andrews in Birmingham, Ala.

"He'll take his test results with him," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "Until I hear from Dr. Andrews, that's all I've got."

A visit with Dr. Andrews is never a good thing for a pitcher.

* * * * * * * 7:21 p.m. UPDATE ON JOBA * * * * *
This from Brian Cashman: Chamberlain has what is being described as rotator cuff tendinitis. He will be rested for “about a week” and then start a throwing program after being evaluated again.
He will return to New York.
Just for your own reference: “tendinitis” is a nice way to say he has a little tear in his rotator cuff.
Joe Girardi said before the game he was optimistic Joba would play again this season. But a rotator cuff issue is nothing to mess around with. Don’t expect to see Chamberlain any time soon this season, if at all.

not good, but could be worse for the yanks.

rays win again!!! they came back with a 6 run ninth inning today to beat the tribe and are at this moment 3.5 games up on boston. the rays are for real.

Jed Lowrie now leads all MLB SS in RBIs since the ASB. Pack your bags, Julio.
