evan longoria (not related to eva longoria) is on the dl with a broken wrist. i think the rays can hold down the fort through labor day, since the rays look more like a team that can plug and chug players instead of relying on a few superstars.

and with only 8 weeks left, how do you guys see getting in the playoffs?

also, the skip caray public service was today, and likely going to have a tribute to skip before tonight's game at the ted, the first since his passing. game is on wgn for those outside of atlanta.

With Longoria out, the Sox will now come back, Pena and Henskie can't replace Longoria. OR Crawford. Watch The Sox take the division now, so I can have my second straight championship.

Down with the Rays, at the core they still suck!

(Sorry I know all in goo dfun I actually like the Rays they're scrappy, but cant back away from my Sox, fan since I was born and love it)

Good luck Rays even though I hate ya!

I think the Rays are destine this year. I doubt they will win the whole thing but I still like them to make the playoffs. I would love to see the Dodgers win it all this year so Torre can flip off Hank. The way the Yankees are playing I would be surprised if they even get the Wild Card at this point. In fact I think the WC comes out of the central.

Arizona's answer to Manny: trading for Adam Dunn.

http://www.latimes.com/sports/baseball/mlb/la-sp-nlgame12-2008aug12,0,770461.story

Looks kind of desperate to me.

It doesn't look like Arizona gave up much for the Dunn rental, much like how the Dodgers got Manny for cheap. If the Dodgers' experience tells them anything, it's that even if Dunn kills the ball, the team can find other ways to lose games. The bullpen has been a strength this season, but they just gave up two straight games to the Giants in the final inning. If they lose the NLW by a tiny margin, it will really haunt them.

The way Manny is hitting, he'd be worth it even if the Dodgers were paying his salary.

Braun still day-to-day with the brew crew. thank god the rest of the lineup has stepped up and remained strong. we need more than solo homers down the stretch though.

Those two games are already haunting me and I don't know how it will turn out in the end. Now we're finding out what we already probably knew -- Saito was worth his weight in gold, and Broxton isn't ready to be a closer, and maybe never will be.

As rentals go, both Blake and Manny were great deals -- a redemption for Colletti. Dunn, I don't care for much. At one point either last year or the year before he was talked about as a possible trade to the Dodgers. My reaction was "please, no." Lots of power obviously but a poor average and way too many strikeouts. He needs good averages both ahead and behind him in the lineup to be useful.

Well, off to the stadium tonight to see how Kershaw handles the Phillies.

Okay people, prediction time. Who will win each division? Who will take the wild cards?

Here are mine:

AL East: Red Sox
AL Central: Twins
AL West: Angels
AL Wild Card: Rays

NL East: Phillies
NL Central: Cubs
NL West: Dodgers
NL Wild Card: Brewers

Division Series:
Red Sox over Twins
Rays over Angels
Brewers over Phillies
Cubs over Dodgers

Championship Series:
Red Sox over Rays
Cubs over Brewers

World Series:
Red Sox over Cubs

AL
Rays
White Sox
Angels
WC Twins

NL
Phillies
Cubs
Dodgers
WC Diamondbacks

W Sox over Rays, Angeles over Twins, Angeles over Sox.

Dodgers over Phillies, Cubs over D Backs, Dodgers over Cubs.
I predict an LA series 7 games Dodgers win.

NL
Phillies
Cubs
Dodgers
WC Diamondbacks

You really think that the Diamondbacks will overcome the 7.5 game gap between them and the Brewers to take the wild card, and yet that will still not be good enough to take the division? You must be expecting the Dodgers to be unbeatable then.

With Manny and Torre there I would not put anything past them. If you saw what Torre did the past 12 years getting to the post season you would not rule out a run. I see a lot of the wild card teams falling off in a few weeks.

Torre has a way to get it done the last month of the season.

And what way is that, exactly? I'm not being sarcastic, I'd really like to know.

The biggest hope for this team IMO isn't a Torre September miracle, it's getting and keeping a few key players off the DL. If Furcal can't come back, then Garciaparra has to stay healthy or they're stuck with Barroa playing short and hitting .200. If Saito can't come back then Broxton has to rise to the occasion, which so far he hasn't done. If those holes don't get plugged then I'm afraid the Dodgers will struggle right to the end.

But of course I'd love to be wrong. ;)

Unfortunately for the Dodgers, neither Manny nor Torre can pitch in the bullpen.

The west is such an even division that it won't take much to win it. The Dodgers are only a game back. All it takes is to get to the post season and take your chances from there.

In other news:

Both the Red Sox and Indians have issued press releases announcing the deal ... here's an Associated Press story on the trade ...

BOSTON (AP) -- The Boston Red Sox have acquired pitcher Paul Byrd in a trade with Cleveland.

The Red Sox will send either a player to be named or cash to the Indians.

The 37-year-old Byrd is 7-10 with a 4.53 ERA this season. But the right-hander has won all four of his starts since the All-Star break.

Boston leads the AL wild-card race. The Red Sox are minus starter Tim Wakefield -- the knuckleballer is out with a stiff right shoulder.

Good move to pick up some depth. With Wake on the DL and Buchholz struggling, it can't hurt. He's 4-0 with a 1.80 ERA in his last 5 starts.

Random baseball thought:

As a baseball fan knuckleballers have always fascinated me. Perhaps because they are so rare. There are 2 in MLB, Tim Wakefield and RA Dickey.

Come tonight however, there will be 3. Career minor leaguer Charlie Zink will make his major league debut for the red sox (coincidentally, taking Wakefield's spot in the rotation).

I just don't see the Angeles getting beaten, they are like the 98 Yankees. You can't get them out and the pitching is stelar. I also don't see the Sox going as deep as years past.

While I would love to see a Rays Cubs series that isn't going to happen. I do see them as a cinderella.

And the thing about knuckleballers..If it's dancing great..If not,it's batting practice..It could be like the Hotel California for Zink tonight..It could be heaven, or it could be hell....Hope he has a good start..The four/five spots in the rotation need a boost...

AL East: Rays

* I do believe that the Angels will have their hands full here and I want to say that the Rays are the only team they don't have a winning record over this season.
I'm assuming my divisional match ups are correct from the previous posts...;)

Wakefield is a thing of beauty when it goes right. When it goes wrong it is not pretty. Not many people can throw a knuckle like him.

I think they can be beaten in a 5 game series but not a 7 game series. That's why I have the Rays beating them in the ALDS. I can see the Rays taking 3 games from starts by Kasmir and Shields.
