USA is not very good against European Teams. Makes me wonder if the other 2 other teams besides England in the world cup will give USA a run for their money.

Well, to be fair, no team, with the possible exception of Brazil, would ever go into a match against the Netherlands or Spain expecting a win. I think the USA played more or less as expected in terms of our FIFA ranking. We are a good side but outclassed by the top 5.

As for our WC group, if we play our best I think we are capable of drawing with England and beating both Slovenia and Algeria. That means that we could conceivably tie on points with the English, although I would imagine they'll beat us on goal difference, which would send us onwards to a really tough match against Germany. We need to beat the two lower ranked teams, the result against England would be a bonus.

My expectations are that USA will progress from the group stage and have a respectable showing against the Germans. Anything less would be a disappointment for USA fans.

I can't see you drawing with us TBH. Go back a decade or two and we used to underestimate the USA. Not these days.

I never said I expected us to, but said if we play our best we are capable of getting a result. And I'm hoping for one.

But the likely result? I imagine we'll lose 2-0 or 3-1, unless Rooney breaks a metatarsal, Beckham gets sent off again and the WAGs lock Capello in a closet. ;)

USA's world cup campaign hinges in the games against Algeria and Slovenia. We have nothing to lose against England because nobody really expects us to do anything against them. Hopefully that realization will allow us to be relaxed and just play our game the best we can. It would be nice to score at least.

Altidore looked very good... He looks to be improving, so I should thank Phil Brown and Jaffa.
Heh. My training methods are brutal. I'll whip him into shape for South Africa. :p

I expect us to qualify from our group without too much hassle, but I reckon we'll have a scare in one of the matches. The US should get through too, from our point of view the wheels will start to fall off once we get into the knock out phase.

By the way, I love this statement from Don Fabio after the win over Egypt:

Fabio Capello said:
Peter Crouch is a big option for me because sometimes you can play long ball.

Is he going all Sam Allardyce/Tony Pulis on us with respect to tactics? :D

Well, he did also pick a certain Stoke defender in his squad last night as well ;)

Not exactly a massive loss to Man U and it has even less impact on England :p

He hasn't exactly gotten a ton of chances this season, but he's managed to put a few important balls in the back of the net. Unless you think Mame Diouf is the second coming of Didier Drogba, Rooney can play every single minute of every single match, and Berbatov can stay on top of his own fitness issues, I'd say Owen is a significant loss for United.

At least the other Owen -- Hargreaves, that is -- is set to be in the reserves squad against City this weekend. Finally!

So Capello has made no secret of the fact that he will play one big man and one small man up front for England. His first choice pair is seemingly Heskey and Rooney.

Now, call me crazy, but I think Kevin Davies should be given some consideration for the big man role. The guy is a handful to defend and scores more than Heskey does.

I refuse to support England when they're managed by someone who picks Barry and Walcott over Milner and Anybody Butwalcott. And Heskey but no Zamora? Wut.

Anyway, I've been away for a while as I'm moping about Leeds throwing away promotion. Doomed to fail in the playoffs again. Hmm.

It's a fair shout, and one that's been made before. Sadly Davies, in ChampMan terms, has pace of 1. That's the biggest black mark against him and is why he's consistantly overlooked.

@smwatson, sounds like Walcott had a much better game today. Maybe he just needs an injury free run...?

As for league one, see you in the playoffs. I can't see Colchester getting an automatic place at the mo. BTW, we're live on Sky on Monday night. Tune in to see if our pitch has improved since the Norwich game (I'll give you a hint...it hasn't:()

Colchester 0-0. Worst. Game. Of. Football. I. Have. Ever. Seen.

Sitting in a pub with 4 Brighton fans. All of us agree it was terrible. One has described it as 'the worst I have ever seen'

On the other (smaller) telly, Wigan are beating Liverpool. Lots of shots of Torres giving the thousand yard stare. I wonder if he'll be there next season, the Reds look poor.

Sickeningly bad. That's what it was. Liverpool allowed Wigan to pass the ball around, and failed to make any passes themselves. Sloppy football, lots of confusion and frustration.

Worryingly, Gerrard and particularly Torres did not play well - the Spaniard fluffed a few chances to at least equalize. Dirk Kuyt also played badly. I seriously can't see Liverpool playing themselves back into 4th this season, if they finish in the Champions League positions it will be because Man City, Villa or Spurs embarrassingly fail to take advantage. Ugh.

Woohoo, nice one Latics.

1st half: Totally dominated Liverpool, Liverpool were very poor.
2nd half: Wigan were still probably the better team, but Liverpool looked improved and the thread of an equalizer was always there.

I must admit, the bad run of form Wigan had been on had me worrying about relegation, but 3 points makes me breathe a little easier.

There is no way that Liverpool are going to finish fourth, that'll be either Man City or Aston Villa.

Torres looks like a guy who is frustrated and miserable, I'd expect him to ask for a transfer this summer.

Liverpool's tactics in the first half were all wrong - got to blame the manager for that one.

Wigan win over woeful Liverpool.:)
Indeed, a very poor show
............Played GD Points
4 Tottenham 28 23 49
5 Man City 27 17 49
6 Liverpool 29 16 48
7 Aston Villa 26 16 45

Doesn't look too good for them for that 'guaranteed' 4th spot, especially if Villa pick up maximum points from their games in hand.

All the criticism Liverpool faced earlier in the season was completely forgotten after Liverpool strung together a few half-arsed wins and draws. But this match shows that the problems are still there.

If City win their two fixtures, Liverpool will be looking at long 7 point gap between themselves and fourth position. And don't forget a trip to old trafford at the end of the month.

Europa league is still feasible though...

I don't think Torres will go as long as Benitez stays and the club stays out of big financial trouble. Right now the owners can't afford to get rid of him - the fan backlash would be intense.

We started a 4-2-3-1 and it seemed like the midfield play was just a mess, leaving Torres isolated up front. A 4-5-1 or a 4-4-2 with Kuyt playing a more advanced role would have been better. Later in the game he got desperate and tracked back to get the ball, which is why he got yellow-carded tackling someone in his own half.

Credit to Wigan though, they played the ball on the ground and passed it around well, though to be fair they got lots of help from Liverpool. But Wigan also defended pretty well for most of the game. Even despite all the bad play we still gave Torres a couple good chances to score and he failed to do that. Bad times for the Reds.

I'm scraping the bottom of the barrel for positives, but Mascherano put in another reasonably decent shift at right back, and we got Johnson back for at least a sub appearance.

It goes from game to game, but the fact of the matter is that the teams in 4th-7th are all very inconsistent right now. Every time Man City wins a game, there are shouts about finishin in the top four, European football and even a title challenge. Spurs are perennially tipped to break the top four and always choke. Same with Villa now. This time Liverpool have really stumbled badly and considering how much money Man City have spent they'll only have themselves to blame if they fail to crack the top four. I wonder if Mancini will survive if that happens?

The most worrying thing for the Premier league is that, based on current form, none of the contenders for 4th spot look set to do anything in Europe next season. I suppose it won't affect the coefficient enough, but a few more seasons like this one and perhaps that 4th spot will lose its Champions League status...

When I look at the Europa League, I'm not convinced Benitez can count on much success there either...the way Liverpool are playing right now, teams like Rubin Kazan, Juventus or Valencia could dump us out of Europe fairly handily.

Great showing from Arsenal so far today against Porto. I'm only following online, but it seems like Arshavin has righted his ship, causing the defense all kinds of difficulty. It's good to see them create so many scoring chances with Cesc on the bench. Player of the match....Nasri?
