Yes Arshavin did sound like he had a great game. He was only having a bad spell when he was playing as a lone striker, which he clearly isn't. Now he's got someone in front of him, even if it is Bendtner (who, despite scoring a hattrick and playing very well, I think is a very limited player). Sadly I was listening on the radio, so I missed Nasri's goal. Sounded pretty good though!

And Bayern goes through, thanks to that ridiculous offsides goal they scored in the first leg. Fiorentina deserved so much better...

That certainly seemed to go well for Arsenal – I reckon Mr Wenger should reward his players' efforts by giving them all a few days rest.

If they all go off and then report back for training next Monday morning, that should do the trick.

Not a good day for English football:

1) Portsmouth fire 85 employees (non-playing) after only two of their players volunteered to take a wage cut.

2) Chester City wound-up by the courts.

3) Cardiff City and Southend given a little more time to pay their debts else face being wound-up.

In the other (CONCACAF) Champions League, Columbus drew 2-2 last night at home to 2008 Mexican Primera Division Champs Toluca. I was humiliated to be outnumbered and out-shouted by the Toluca fans in my own stadium :(, but at least I tried to raise the noise level a bit. We looked very rusty in the first half, the team is still two weeks away from our season openers and Toluca are in mid-season form and fitness. After being 2-0 down at the end of the first half, Columbus' Art Garfunkel-haired striker Steven Lenhart struck twice to keep the tie alive. A great result considering how much better the Mexican sides are on paper.

No MLS team has ever won in Mexico, and they have 2 away goals, so the second leg in Mexico will be a tough game for the Crew...but it was an exciting match to watch, for the 4200 souls who showed up. And I'm tired after 6 hours of driving to my "home" stadium. They need to make this country smaller.

Still no word if there's going to be a strike in MLS.

Farsley Celtic wound up too.
Chester wound up because of debts totalling about £25k. Which is a little bit more than Kaka (for example) earns a day. Football is a mess.

I despise Manchester United. And Wayne Rooney. And Gary Neville. And everything about them. 3-0 up at home against one of the (ex) best teams in Europe and their 'fans' are silent. Too busy planning their drive back to Surrey I assume. Pathetic.
Utterly soulless football club. I hope their debts catch up with them one day.

It's funny, there was some good football being played but the game felt dull to me...and the crowd was oddly quiet.

I must say, I really do dislike Man United. Partly because they have been so dominant for the entire period I've been a serious football fan, and partly because many of their personalities (SAF, Rooney, Neville, CR9) annoy me endlessly.

A hate to say this, but I'd even cheer for Real Madrid if it meant seeing United get knocked out of the CL. Except that they just got knocked out. :)

Oh, I don't know - didn't you all hear the massive cheers that came up from the crowd when Beckham came on? :p

I do agree that there were some periods of the match where it sounded pretty darned quiet, but there were plenty of cheers and much to cheer about tonight at OT. This year's Milan squad is not one of their best by any means, plus they were missing out on Pato, Nesta, Antonini, and Dida (some would say that's a positive for them, though), and Rooney's early goal took all of the suspense out of the match. Besides, there have been many instances where I couldn't say I was impressed with the crowd noise at Stamford Bridge or Emirates, either.

The best part of the night was watching Vida and Rio both defending like their old selves again.

Oh well, I'm not going to waste time being defensive here. I'm going to enjoy the feeling of the convincing erasure of many years of European heartbreak at the hands of Milan.

And there'll be no chance of rooting for Real against United this year: Lyon finished the job and knocked them out at the Bernebau! I guess a couple hundred million Euro doesn't buy you much these days.

I can't feel sorry for Real, I must say. It also make's Liverpool's defeat to Lyon look less bad...

It would be nice, but a glance around the remaining CL contenders shows a lot of very big budgets.

And some very very big debts.

It says it all, really.

Farsley Celtic had slipped under my radar, by the way. Another name to add to the ever growing list...

Very sad about Farsley. As much as they angered so many Leeds fans when their chairman came out and said he would rename them Leeds Celtic when Leeds went under to try and win new fans, they're a proper family club and lots of people have lost jobs because of this. The youth teams are also a big part of the local community in that area. And they're responsible for Paul Madeley. For those of you not familiar with your History of Leeds United 1919-2010 Paul Madeley played in every single outfield position (bar goalkeeper) for Leeds and was tremendous. Micah Richards was also a youth player there I believe.

However, Farsley had debts of £750k. How is that possible? I don't understand how that's happened. Very sad nonetheless.

This all makes the impasse over the collective bargaining agreement in the MLS more interesting to me. The league cites the failure of increasing numbers of clubs as an indication that leagues and football associations in Europe especially are far to laissez-faire when it comes to financial and ownership controls...

...and they have a point. BUT, fans want to see clubs buy skilled, entertaining players, and such players are expensive. And they want clubs to be able to spend money on infrastructure too.

EDIT: Newsflash: Liverpool are rubbish. That is all.

Just listened to Liverpool on the radio. I wonder if it's only me but I really have no interest in how get on...? I mean, usually I really want the English/British teams to win, this season included. I wanted Arsenal and Man Utd to win this week, and I definitely want Fulham to do well in Turin this evening, but Liverpool, I not bothered:confused:

As many of you know, I support a league 1 club, so it's not a bias thing.... Maybe it's the way they're playing idk. I'm just a bit bored of them this season. Still, just thought I'd throw it out there.

The funny thing is, the squad is not that much different from a team that made it to the CL final in '07 and narrowly avoided winning the league last year. The difference, it seems, is having an in-form Alonso, Gerrard and Torres. Without them, Liverpool are a 6th place team. I know that's what all the pundits are saying, but I really can't think of another reason...I don't think the issues with the fans vs the owners could be affecting the players this much. Many of them don't even speak English, so it's not like they are reading the red tops.

I feel like something's got to give. If Liverpool fail to finish in the top four that should be viewed as unacceptable to everyone at the club, from the owners down to the kit man.

Fulham lost 3-1 in Turin today, but the good news, at least for US fans is that Clint Dempsey played 30 minutes. Provided he doesn't get injured again, he should be fit for the world cup.

Great news. I want the US to be at full strength on June 12 so that they'll have no excuses when England take them to the cleaners. :D

With the Olympics now over here in Vancouver, I've been getting pretty excited for the world cup over the last few days.

EDIT: I just spent the last 20 minutes thinking that all the matches were between 10PM EST and 2:30 AM EST, but then realized it's 10 AM EST and 2:30 PM EST.

*phew*

Fixed that for you. :p

Hahaha, well played. ;)

I see that ESPN is going with an all-UK lineup for their US-broadcast announcing team for the World Cup. Considering what happened last time around, it's a solid decision.

Who can complain about Martin Tyler and Ian Darke?

I'll be in Anchorage, Alaska during the World Cup - meaning matches will be between 6AM - 10:30AM local time.

The big question is, will the commentary team actually be at the game, or will they be commentating by watching the game on the TV at ESPN headquarters like they did for the Euro Championships in 2008 and the World Cup in 2006?
