Dreadfully disappointed. But not surprised. Our performances have been a little better as of late, but we need to keep winning and the clubs around us need to keep losing.

This loss hurts my pride but is fairly meaningless in terms of our season goals. I need to see the penalty call before I comment on that. Didn't get to watch the match because it was broadcast on the HD channel, which I don't have.

It isn't my fault that nobody likes United except United supporters. :D

P.S. Well done Reina for saving Rooney's spot kick. I can't blame him for getting beaten on the rebound.

I'm as neutral as Jaffa with regards to the top of the table teams but I didn't watch the match so can't comment on the refereeing. :D

My non neutral opinion is that the foul started outside the box but unfortunately continued enough for Valencia to just about buy a decision in the box

There weren't any major howlers in the refereeing

Was a foul outside the box, but when he actually goes to ground it wasn't a foul, it was a simple dive. Referee either gives the free kick for where the foul takes place, outside the box, or if he doesn't think that's a foul, he books the player for diving.

Thats what i iniitially thought but Masche let go of his left arm a little tooo late

I'm surprised Chelsea dropped points. After they scored i really thought they'd walk it and even went to sleep only to wake up now and find out otherwise.

If the deity in charge of footballing matters is listening..... please?!

There are quite a few folk who support teams outside of the top flight, and outside of England for that matter.

I'm going to play the Wenger defence and say that I didn't see it. We've been away visiting friends this weekend and thus didn't see the match, although we listened to the radio commentary on the drive back – and I'm not going to base my views on those of Alan Green.

Kanu, who is rumored to be older than Ian Dowie, scored a winner for Pompey against Jaffa's boys. Thoughts on the new gaffer's performance, Jaffa?
With us being away I was relying on phone updates for the score, I didn't hear the commentary. Once again though it's the same old problem of late goals causing us problems – whether or not it's a simple case of concentration dropping at the end of matches I don't know, but it's something that we really need to address.

There had been talk that Folan might earn a recall, and the rumours proved to be true as he came into the side to replace Altidore who apparently is injured. He fell out with Brown big time – earning himself a loan away at Middlesbrough and a lengthy spell on the naughty step – and I wonder if Dowie felt that he had a point to prove.

Yesterday's loss was a damaging one, especially given Wolves' point against Villa. We're three points from safety at present – although the goal differences involved effectively mean we've got a four point gap to overturn in eight games. It's certainly possible, but as per usual we're not doing things the easy way. :p

Hey, I never met an elephant that didn't like manure before!

Haven't seen a really conclusive replay on the Mascherano foul yet. It did look like he still was grabbing Valencia's arm as they went into the penalty area. A foul that starts outside the box but continues into the box is a penalty according to the rule book.

Glad I didn't get up early enough to watch the match live. I probably would have given myself an ulcer!

Really? I always thought it's where the foul started that determines whether it's a penalty or not

FIFA Rules of the Game (PDF) said:
"If a defender starts holding an attacker outside the penalty area and continues holding him inside the penalty area, the referee must award a penalty kick."

The question is whether Mascherano let go of Valencia's arm before he entered the penalty area. To me it looked like he didn't let go in time, but it's hard to tell from the replay angles available.

It's a tough call for the ref. I'll just say that if this incident occurred at Anfield, the ref would have spotted the ball about six yards outside the box.

Not to be a huge pedant, but aren't they 'Laws' rather than 'Rules' in terms of how football is run? Is this an official document?

True, but the rest still applies, just switch the words..

For what it's worth, I think Rafa should be the last one talking about diving and undeserved penalties.
Now he's going on about how SAF influenced the referee, this after he called a conference and had a rant to do exactly the same last season. It just comes off as desperately pathetic attempts to divert attention from his drowning ship..

They're all throwing stones in a glass house, to quote England's Brave John Terry. :p

Fergie shoots his mouth off just as badly if not worse. As if winning everything all the time wasn't enough, he has to question the fitness and eyesight of the refs at every possible opportunity, and he flips out when other teams get lucky breaks...how he hasn't been banned more often is a mystery to me.

But you can't single any manager out really, all the top managers do it, they are just trying to take the pressure off their players. My favorite example of that has to be Joe Kinnear's outburst at the press, that was raw. And a close second goes to Maradona's testicle-grabbing tirade after qualifying for the WC. Love it. :D

You're right in that every manager does it, mind games is a huge part of the game afterall but one manager pointing it out in another manager has to be considered rock bottom, I mean, they knew the business they were getting into.
Also, judging by his relationship/feuds with other premiership managers, I'm sure they don't appreciate it either.

No love for King Kev?

Let's not forget either that when a manager starts with the mind games prior to a big match – or puts themselves in the firing line post match with comments on the opposition or officials – they're often doing so to draw pressure and criticism away from their players. If it riles the rival in question, so much the better.

Ferguson is the absolute master at it, and he's been honing the art since his days at Aberdeen.

Manchester United v Liverpool,

Referee - big error - not sending off the petulant tw@t Torres.

Relegation - West Ham United - if the game with Arsenal is anything to go by, slow, can't pass, no vision, and scared.

Cheers,
OW
