I've said it before and I'll say it again. THey need a rule that says that unless the ref calls you over, the only player who can approach the ref is the captain. Anyone else, yellow card.

Bingo, but I thought that was already in place, just the implementation is poor. Sure a lot of players could get sent off in the beginning, but it's hoped even they would learn. During a radio discussion about sin bins in football, one caller described the effect during a youth cup competition; after a short period of the bins being full, the penny dropped and there was a large reduction in the number of bad tackles. The FA, referee groups etc. need the balls to stick with it, and some 8 v 7 games might be entertaining.

Cheers,
OW

What do you think?

+2

I think it's a great idea. Having players mouth off or surround the ref is not part of the game. The captain should be the only player allowed to speak to the ref under most circumstances.

Blah. I don't like it. I need to hurry up and buy the current shirt before it's gone. I desperately need to find someone in the US who sells the white third kit. (Andy Pipkin voice) I want that one.

EDIT: Dempsey fails to make Fulham's squad for the Europa League match. Is he being rested or is he hurt again? (Further edit: nevermind, he's hurt. Bummer.)

Come on Reds. I think we just might be able to win the Europa league with a little luck. The key today is not to concede. It's depressing to see what a "full strength" side looks like for Liverpool these days, but barring Skrtel's absence that's essentially what we've got. Aquilani was healthy enough to make the bench. Miracle.

The Liverpool shirt looks odd because – and I hate myself for saying this – it doesn't have the Carlsberg logo on. That sponsor has been emblazoned across the front of the shirt for so long that having another company on there looks peculiar. To be honest I can't say I'm really that taken with it, but then it may just be one of those kits that look better on the pitch than it does in the photographer's studio. We'll see, and hopefully Adidas can come up with some better designs for their other English teams... ;p

Mind, one related thing that caught my football shirt/typography geek eye on the Liverpool website...

Why not pre-order your shirt with the New Liverpool FC Name & Number style that will be worn in European Competition, the FA Cup and friendly matches?

Now, Liverpool wear Adidas numbering in Europe (where of course clubs can basically use any typeface they want on their shirts) but for the FA Cup they – like all other teams – wear the typeface of their league. I'm not sure if there is an actual rule that states that teams must wear their league's regulation lettering (and a quick look through the FA's rules doesn't mention this) but it's accepted practice – I wonder if this means next season we're going to see a free-for-all with certain teams wearing manufacturer's lettering in the Cup?

What? ;)

Zamora gives Fulham a bigger lead and a vital away goal after 20 seconds. Get him a plane ticket to South Africa! :)
Torres seems to be having issues staying onside, and Liverpool are struggling generally

"It was typical professionalism in a way but they saw the opportunity and they almost forced the referee to get the card out - the referee wasn't going to do anything. But we've seen it before from teams like that."

Teams like that?

Teams like all

Professionalism seems to be the word... Roll over and scream in agony if that can get your opponent receive a card, try to influence the ref all the time... if the first instance didn't work, try again, etc....

If Ferguson thinks his squad is "sporting" and the rest isn't... he should find a big hole in the ground and stuff his gum-chewing-head in it.

It's the same old story - Liverpool can't hold on to the ball this season. Pretty much every game I've watched, the biggest problem for us is cheap giveaways in midfield.

Fulham seem in command of the tie now, they just need to stay focused.

EDIT: Dirk Kuyt!...eventually ruled a goal. :D

Sorry - might be lost in translation - it's the sort of thing said this end that a nervous fan, say Lord Blackadder, sees as tempting fate.

Cheers,

Fine by me. I don't support Liverpool, so if they go out of Europe, I couldn't be bothered. ;)

Now if Fulham lose the plot in the second half, then it'll be a long flight home for High Grant, who is in the stands.

I like the fact that people from Hamburg are actually called Hamburgers. :D

EDIT: And Torres scores! Great work from Benayoun and Kuyt. I feel like at least a little of the European magic is back at Anfield. I want to see a clean sheet though, that's really hurt us all season.

It sounds like Lucas is having his best game since we beat Manchester United earlier this season.

I think the performance of the round has to be Fulham though, they just beat the Bundesliga champs in their own stadium. Well done Fulham!

Overall it sounds like the best Liverpool performance I've seen for months, against quality opposition too, though Benfica didn't play their best. Lucas, Benayoun, Kuyt and and G&T all had great games. I wish we'd kept a clean sheet but the defense still held up pretty well.

Finally!! I've been watching this one come together, and they've made a bid. We're going to be around next season, even if it is in League Two again.

I can't help but also notice that Sean Connelly is also a big friend of the currently out-of-contract Jim Gannon :)

A glimmer of hope – fingers crossed. :)
I get the feeling this one is more than a glimmer. Cheshire Sport (owners of both Sale Sharks and the Edgeley Park stadium) have agreed rental arrangements, and Stockport Council have stated they will help financially support the consortium with a number of sponsorships.

Also no involvement from any businessmen who previously messed around Lord Mawhinney's beloved Peterborough (unlike Jim Melrose's failed group) should definitely help get this bid past the Football League :)
