Speaking of kits I like...

The white especially. Simple, clean, understated.

The pre-season benchmark has been set. Markleshark, pachyderm and Fizzoid – when the Mighty Tigers meet Carlisle and Wednesday we'll surely be looking to emulate Villarreal's recent friendly victory over Navata, where they ran out winners by a not unimpressive 27-0 margin.

Friendly? I beg to differ, that's just mean. :D

Still not a big fan of gold/black though
I'm sure OllyW will be along shortly to explain why you're wrong. ;)

Meanwhile, the final whistle has just gone on Shamrock Rover's friendly with Real Madrid – that finished just 1-0 to the free-spending Spaniards, the goal coming just a few minutes from the end. You've got to feel a bit sorry for Rovers.

Fixed :)

So, as you can tell, I'm fascinated by kits, so I was looking at the current premier league offerings to see which ones hadn't been announced yet. Still remaining to be revealed are:

Bolton Away
Chelsea 3rd/Euro (another shade of Blue perhaps)
Everton Away
Everton 3rd/Euro
Fulham Away
Fulham 3rd/Euro
Man City Away
Man Utd 3rd/Euro
Portsmouth Home
Wigan Away

Here's a leaked pic of Portsmouth's away kit:

I like this one.

That's a very seventies neck they've got going on there.

I've seen a pic of Manchester City's away/third (I'm not sure which) - it was white with a red and black diagonal sash. There was an image doing the rounds of all their new kit and training wear a while back, taken at some kind of preview event.

27-0? Are you sure you aren't reporting the score of an American gridiron football game?

I saw that. Well done to the Rovers though... And how much did that goal cost Real?

Also, sorry to Fizz... :(

Well, this evenings friendly finished Carlisle 1 - 2 Hull City. Must say, a very decent game from our point of view. A game in which had we taken our chances I have to say we'd have ran out comfortable winners.

Hull fielded 2 different sides each side of the break with most of the first 11 getting a run out. Hull still being in the early stages of their pre-season probably didn't take it as seriously as Carlisle, with Carlisle now looking to cement their first team and Hull still looking for fitness. FWIW though Jaffa, Jerome Thomas, while mighty fast, was poor. Our right back had him in his pocket for the whole of the first half, he didn't manage to get past him once that I can remember. To be quite frank, I'm not sure I remember a City attempt on goal in the first half. Also, Craig Fagan may have let it slip his mind that it was a pre-season friendly and managed to get himself quite the ticking off from the Ref. Tut tut indeed Mr. Fagan. Giovanni came on at half time and touched the ball about once, not sure a Wet and Windy evening in Carlisle was high on his list of 'things to do in Engerland' when he joined Manchester City in the first place. Your best performer by a country mile was Peter Halmosi. Came on for the second half and really opened us up a few times. Daniel Cousin took his goal well after some mighty poor defending and put himself about a bit but again, wasn't much else from him. Again though, this was just another fitness first match and I wouldn't be too worried about individual performances quite yet. Daniel Cousin took his goal well after some mighty poor defending and put himself about a bit but again, wasn't much else from him.

I was very impressed with how we played tonight and a most enjoyable night was had by all. Phil 'How on earth does he get a tan like that?' Brown made an appearance as well, mind you he didn't stay on the touchline. I was a little star struck as well, so got myself an iPhone snap. It's more of an appearance than Gareth Southgate made last year, maybe he feels that is the key to staying up.

ZOMFGBBQ it's Phil Brown and Giovanni. :D Happy days.

I've been keeping tabs on the score, and the fact that we didn't win 27-0 can only mean one thing – Brown out! :p

Interesting what you say about Halmosi, he's one of those players that a section of the City support like to criticise. He didn't impress greatly last season, although to be fair he never really got a proper run in the first team.

As for Thomas, from what I hear it seems Brown is keen to maybe keep him on trial a bit longer to properly assess him, possibly even taking him out to Beijing. He impressed in the two previous friendlies – albeit against non-league opposition – so we'll see if Brown considers him part of his long term plans.

I imagine Brown probably spent much of the game in the stands, linked to the bench with an earpiece. As for the tan, what people often fail to realise is that Hull is always bathed in glorious sunshine. Oh yes.

Thanks for the report, you're our very own Stuart Hall. :)

Clint Dempsey

So, I'd like an English take on Clint Dempsey as a footballer in the EPL.

I have a weird connection to him, although I do not know him personally. He is a native Texan just up the highway from here in Houston and I dated a girl that dated him back in high school.

Do english football fans think he is any good? Does he have proper skills for the Premier League? I think he is one of Americas best players and he has the best chance at making a name for us over there. But I'm on the outside looking in. He is still young and has plenty of room for improvement and I seem to think he is grasping a better hold of the game year by year. To me, he plays more of an English style football then an American style. Do you think he will hang in the EPL for years to come and make a direct impact or just kind of coast along and be a mid-level player?

I'd say that Dempsey is an average player by Premier League standards - but then again that means average in what is arguably the best league in the world, so that's really better than average. He's my favorite first team national player right now...Donovan is probably a little more technically gifted but Dempsey is playing his trade in a much tougher league with success, and has a better physical side to his game than Landycakes.

I think players like Dempsey are the keys to growing the sport in the US. MLS, as it grows, will help, but having more starters in big European leagues is what we really need. And right now, Dempsey is in my book the top outfield player the USA has in Europe (I say outfield because Cleveland native Tim Howard is probably our best player in Europe).

I like Dempsey - he's a fine larker. I think playing for a mid-table Premier League side (and playing well there) is probably his level, I don't think he'd excel at a 'big four' club. But he's a good advert for US 'soccer', and always one of my first fantasy football choices as it happens.

It's also got to be encouraging to young American players to see one of their compatriots doing well in one of the big European leagues.

I had a wee laugh to myself when I saw that the mighty Accrington Stanley have been caught up in a scandal. When else would a division 3 betting ring be discussed in an :apple: orientated website .
