Chelsea play MLS side Seattle Sounders FC tomorrow in Ancelotti's first game in charge.
You'll have to let us know if the Londoners turn out in their blue home shirts or their blue away shirts...

Meanwhile, I'm hearing some worrying reports that we're looking to pay Newcastle United £3million for the services of Joey Barton. I sincerely hope this isn't the case.

Carlisle United Vs. Hull City.

What strength of side do you think Hull will bring Jaffa? Looking forward to it. Be a tough game.
That and the tie against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough are undoubtedly the biggest matches of this pre-season, anywhere.

We actually played our first pre-season match earlier today, against local non-league side North Ferriby United.

We were supposed to be going but unfortunately Miss Jaffa Cake is a bit poorly so we had to knock it on the head.

Basically, we fielded a different XI in each half, a mixture of experienced players and our higher-rated youngsters. I expect the same to happen against Winterton Rangers tomorrow, and wouldn't be surprised to see the same happen against Carlisle and Wednesday.

To give you an idea, our respective line-ups were;

First half: Myhill, Ricketts, Turner, Gardner, Dawson, Mendy, Marney, Boateng, Thomas, Fagan, Cousin

Second half: Duke, Doyle, Cooper, Mouyokolo, Kilbane, Devitt, Featherstone, Cairney, Hughes, Bamby, Folan

The second half side was the one with a number of the youngsters (Cooper, Devitt, Featherstone, Cairney) but it still had a fair bit of experience in there as you can see. Mouyokolo was making his first appearance in a City shirt, as was Jerome Thomas who is with us on trial (and who actually opened the scoring). I couldn't tell you about any substitutions other than the wholesale changes at half time, though.

For the record, it finished 6-0 to City meaning we retain the Billy Bly Memorial Trophy. Hurrah!

From the BBC:

Hull assistant manager Brian Horton has denied reports linking the club with a move for controversial Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton.

Indeed, I've heard comments of that nature from Horton today. I really, really hope there's nothing in these rumours, I've made my feelings about Barton known on here before and they generally use the words 'thug' and 'nasty' in some combination.

I take it his wife is a Thai bride as well.

Meanwhile, Adebayor has finally completed his move to Manchester City. Maybe they can send a surplus striker or two our way, they owe us one after we sorted out their half time entertainment for them last season. ;)

It does amuse me to read journalists and opinion piece writers penning articles based around mocking Phil Brown as being overexposed in the media, thus devoting even more column inches to him. ;)

The fact remains he's the most successful manager in our history, come the end of each season he's been with us we've either met our aims or seriously exceeded them. I grant you he's not the most popular of figures in the game, but here's something that may surprise the media – his job is to bring success to Hull City Football Club, not to ingratiate himself with Arsenal supporters.

As for the transfer situation, this chap told us not to panic...

...and I'm listening to him, he's a decorated war hero and everything.

There's a rumor going around that Wigan are about to sign Hamilton's 18 year old wonderkind James McCarthy. That would be an interesting signing.

On a separate note, how are Man City going to find playing times of all their strikers?

They're going to have to get shut of a few, I imagine though anyone leaving might be facing a hefty wage cut.

On the subject of Manchester City's new striking acquisitions, it seems that the new recruits are contractually obliged to don daft headwear when on club business. After Tevez's vampire tea cosy look, Adebayor tipped up at Eastlands sporting a leather flat cap that a passing Manc pigeon seems to have relieved itself on...

This will be Hughes last year at City

I kind of chuckle at some City friends who claim their season won't be a waste if they don't get a Top 4 Premier League finish or other smaller title. They are just building for the next 2-3 years they say.

Garbage

If they get off to a slow start he may not even last the year.

I was thinking the same thing about that hat...for the amount of money he makes couldn't he find some less shabby headgear?

Hughes seems a good manager, but in the zero tolerance, instant gratification world of top football clubs he's no Mourinho or SAF. So I expect him to lose his job this season.

Chelsea cruised to a 2-0 victory over Seattle in an impressively packed stadium. Thank God they removed the turf and put in real grass for the match. Chelsea didn't look all that great (Ballack still can't tackle to save his life BTW), and Seattle should have converted one or two good chances, but their finishing let them down. Ljungberg's service was very good, but Seattle's young, talented (and yet still raw) striker Fredy Montero couldn't convert the crosses. Oh, and in answer to your question Jaffa - Chelsea were in the blue kits today. ;) :D

It was interesting to watch Anelka play an MLS team - in our league you find players with either his pace or his touch, but not both.

The USA "C team" scrapes into the Gold cup semifinal after Kenny Cooper converted a penalty in the 103rd minute. Next up, a tough match with Honduras - you know, the country that got into a war over a soccer match?

I have to agree with your friends, I don't think it will be a waste if they don't get into the top 4, but I think they'll have to get close. The team's going to be so much different to last season that they're going to need some time to gel (if at all, only time will tell). However, whether the powers that be think the same is anyone's guess :)

According to VG, Bjørn Helge Riise, the kid brother of former Liverpool left back John Arne Riise, has been sold to Fulham for £1.5-2M from Norwegian premier league outfit Lillestrøm. The younger Riise usually plays right midfield, but can also be used central and even to the left.

Fulham already have two Norwegians, Brede Hangeland, that are linked to several clubs, including Arsenal, and somewhat less in demand Erik Nevland.

In the end, you may be right. The moves now may benefit the team in the future

But I think everytime a City fan states that the end all of the season is not a Top 4 PL finish, they are doing what so many people do (including myself, btw) and that is....soften the negatives that are ahead.....

I am in the States and always chuckle whenever a fan of an NFL team says, "We have a hard schedule, I will take X amount of losses and be happy with that." Then the losses ACTUALLY occur and all hell breaks loose and the people stating they would be happy with those losses all the sudden are outraged at ACTUALLY losing them.

I kind of look at City fans like that. They STATE the end-all isnt a Top 4 finish but in reality, it is....and when they lose the games that push them out of the Top 4, hell will break loose.

Hell, it almost broke loose LAST season.

If you've ploughed millions upon millions into a football club, the chances are you're going to want results sooner rather than later. Oil billionaires are the sort of people who are used to laying out a bit of cash and getting exactly what they want – for an example of how this transfers across to football, witness Roman's lack of patience when Chelsea are under-performing.

If Hughes doesn't deliver what they want, he'll be looking for a new job. If Hughes delivers what they want but doesn't continue to consistently do so, he'll be looking for a new job.

Anyway, onto proper football matters – our pre-season matches ahead of Tuesday's clash of the titans at Brunton Park against the Boy Leshark's lads. We were in action against Winterton Rangers today, winning the match 3-0. Once again, we fielded two different teams in each half, each a mixture of youth and experience – a further indication that this might be the sort of side Carlisle will find themselves facing. Geovanni was back in action, as was winger Peter Halmosi.

Markleshark – I'd be interested to hear your thoughts after the game, especially regarding trialist Jerome Thomas who has impressed so far with us.

See you at the Estádio Brunton Park, Senhor Leshark!
