1000BST officially marks the start of the new campaign today. We had a teaser yesterday when Carlisle we're drawn at home to Oldham in the Carling Cup, but this is it... Fixtures day. :D

Seriously though, it wouldn't surprise me if Sir Alex brings in a couple of players to replace him - ones who aren't at Ronaldo's standard but are more than capable of doing a job for him, while offering more flexibility and cover.
Agreed. With Owen Hargreeves looking at possibly retiring, I think he'll look to strengthen the midfield as well as buying Valencia to put out on the wing. I do hope he doesn't plan on sticking Rooney out on the left again, for England's sake!

So... Chelsea away on the opening day, Liverpool at home on the last. Manchester United on Boxing Day.

April looks like it could be a vital month for us – Stoke City (A), Burnley (H), Birmingham City (A) and Sunderland (H) could give us the chance to pick up points at a time when we may well need them...

on the rumor side though Real is still far from done with buying kaka and c.ronaldo ... they tried to sign Ribery from munich buy Hoeneß/Rummengie always denied the rumors saying that they aren't going to let him go for 40-60 millions

so now even higher sums are supposedly in discussion as well as an exchange of players (robben and van der vaart being rumored especially with the new trainer of Bayern being van Gaal)

they could just be placeholders or something
Bingo! ;)

Everton is starting at home to Arsenal... tough one... not sure I like that... unless we win, of course, then it's brilliant... :p

any good game in the US this summer?
Everton is playing MSL all stars July 30th... Now, if it's gonna be any good, that I don't know... edit: nor do I know where they're playing... (they are playing River Plate in Edmonton 5 days earlier, though.)

The fixtures look to have been kind to Wolves.

We don't play any of the big 4 until November and the matches at the end of the season don't look too bad either. :)

JC, I hope both of our clubs are safe before the last weekend because I don't see either of them picking up any points in the last game.

CR may or may not be the best player in the world, but I'd say he's the most complete player in the world. He is above average to excellent at pretty much every facet of the game, except for maybe tracking back on defense. I think overall Messi is a shade better right now, and his well-taken header in the CL final was just the cherry on top.

It will be a fascinating off-season, as I've said before. SAF will no doubt be bringing in a number of players to spread the scoring and playmaking burden around. What will be more interesting to see is the mix of established stars and potential up-and-comers he brings in, and which potential up-and-comers currently on the roster will have a greater role next season. The rumor mill shows arrow down on the most logical superstar acquisition targets so far (Ribery, Benzema, Villa), so we're waiting to see what "Plan B" is.

Celtic /= Tour of Champions.

yeah., my bad. someone posted who is coming in here somewhere...

On to futbol:

Any of you other USA-based fans of the Beautiful Game planning to make it to any of the matches at the 2009 World Football Challenge? AC Milan, Inter Milan, Club America and Chelsea are participating. AC vs Inter in Massachusetts sounds tasty.

Johnson to Liverpool sounds like it could be a decent buy, especially if he will be a regular starter.

one match will be played in Atlanta... A.C. Milan V Club America
A.C. Milan V Club America

The worlds best player? Highly debatable.

I agree that "world's best" is an ever-changing, subjective discussion - but no matter how much you may not like him personally (I don't), you have to admit he is one of the best if not the best. He scored a LOT of goals for United in big games, time after time. There are few players who can step into a team and create goals the way he can. Pretty much any team would take him in a minute if they could afford him.

In other news, the 4th and final automatic world cup qualifying place from Asia has been decided. , and it's gone to North Korea. They will join South Korea, Japan, and Australia in the World Cup.

I have now had a chance to analyse the fixtures, and have pinpointed the following games for possible attendance (at least, until Sky mess everything up by moving them to a week night)...

26th September: Liverpool
17th October: Fulham
5th December: Aston Villa
16th January: Tottenham Hotspur
1 May: Wigan Athletic

Catering staff at the relevant stadia are advised to order in plenty of crisps and Chunky Kit Kats in preparation for my arrival.

First visit to Wigan?

First visit to Wigan?
It would be indeed. It would also be my first visit to those other grounds as well, obviously we've not had the chance to often go to Premier League places in the past.

Miss Jaffa Cake's uncle lives not far from Wigan, we had planned to have a mass outing last season but other stuff scuppered our plans. This season perhaps, and it is our last away fixture of the campaign...

Awww man, I thought this was going to be about the real, masculine version of football.

Every year... we attract a couple of imbeciles who slate football clearly without paying any attention to it at all. Oh well!

Jaffa - Everton away first game of the season, what did I say... ;)

Good stuff, while he's in a predicting mood ask your pal if he reckons we'll stay up or not. :D

Meanwhile, a good result tonight for our Under-21s, who ran out 2-0 winners over Spain. Rather pleasingly, the boy Campbell opened up the scoring with a well taken shot.

Three Lions = One Tiger (we hope)
