Awesome news on Altidore, just one more reason to count the days till the season starts!

OllyW, that's a really interesting history you've unearthed there. I had heard something of that "league" from some other football fans here, but never looked it up..fascinating.

Congrats on the purchase Jaffa, very exciting news to hear and i wish the lad the best of luck - this is definitely something I'd back to see more of.
On another note, I've made myself a desktop countdown timer to the start of the league hoping it would make the wait more tolerable but it seems to have had the opposite effect as now I just stare at the screen and watch the seconds pass by!

How do you reckon Wednesday's season will go, Fizzoid (and pachyderm for that matter) – are you brimming with confidence or filled with dread?

As for Celtic vs Arsenal, I think we could all see that one coming. Should be an interesting tie.

Go Celtic!

Mid pack for the Owls... I hope. I don't think we added much. We do have something to build on though and I hope we get out of the gate better than we did last season. ... Fizz...?

++++++++++++++++++++++++
This just in: ESPN/EPL/US

Hull City on twice and Spurs only once... better than nothing at all... ;)

I know we mentioned this somewhere on here before but my understanding was that it was only going to effect UK viewers. Do you guys even get ESPN?

Well done lad, well done... and those kits are hideous. So is his haircut...RIP.

Young whipper snapper.

I'll leave it to someone who knows his stuff to put you right about the kit....

Shirts were proper shirts in those days.

If you really want to see a hideous Wolves strip, here we go...

That is hideous! Well done! I prefer the stuff they make today versus the heavy thick stuff from back in the day.
At 45 I'll take the "whipper snapper" stuff as a compliment, anyday. ;)

Oh, you are exactly as "young" as me then. :D

It was the first football strip I had as a kid and so will always be my favourite. :)

Have to say the same really. Any improvement on last season is a step in the right direction and I'd personally be happy with 10th. We just haven't done enough to realistically push for the playoffs. Would like to see a semi-decent cup run this season though.
Unfortunately our most deadly looking striker (Akpo Sodje) is already injured. I don't think he's put more than a 3 game stint together for us :( and as for the myth that is Franny Jeffers, what he does this season is anyone's guess.
Frankie Simek returning from inury is almost like a new signing, as he spent most of last season injured, so if he can regain some of the form he was showing, along with a slightly stronger defence\midfield (Purse & Gray) I think we should leak less goals this season.

from Soccernet

Fulham's reward for beating Vetra of Lithuania 6-0 on aggregate in the third qualifying round is a tie against Russian Premier Liga side Amkar Perm.

Amkar finished fourth in their domestic league to qualify for the competition but are only 12th in the 2009 campaign with four wins from their 16 games.

I wish we had some news apart from we failed to attract the player we wanted and we sold so and so... Always a good way to guarantee relegation, sell all your strikers!

Apart from of course we got £550,000 (Albeit not all at once) from a tribunal for a striker who didn't score for 5 months of the season and was prolly worth about 50p.

The English football season is now officially under way, given that it's half time in the opening clash between Middlesbrough and the dastardly Sheffield United. The Scottish League (Divisions 1, 2 and 3) kicks off tomorrow, with the English and Scottish Premier Leagues starting next weekend. As such, it's about time we heard some predictions for the upcoming campaign – so here's a mast..

06mast.jpg

...time to nail your colours to it. ;)

Tell me who you reckon will be...

English Premier League Champions
The three teams to be relegated from the English Premier League
Scottish Premier League Champions
Champions League Winners
The first manager in the English Premier League to be sacked
The first English Premier League player to be arrested
Will Manchester City finish in the top four?

My own predictions then...

English Premier League Champions
Manchester United
The three teams to be relegated from the English Premier League
(in no particular order) Portsmouth, Burnley, Birmingham
Scottish Premier League Champions
Rangers
Champions League Winners
Barcelona
The first manager in the English Premier League to be sacked
Mark Hughes
The first English Premier League player to be arrested
John Terry.
Will Manchester City finish in the top four?
No. No, they won't.

English Premier League Champions
Manchester United
The three teams to be relegated from the English Premier League
Burnley, Wolves, Hull City (sorry Jaffa & Olly)
Scottish Premier League Champions
Rangers
Champions League Winners
Real Madrid
The first manager in the English Premier League to be sacked
again, Mark Hughes
The first English Premier League player to be arrested
Ashley Cole
Will Manchester City finish in the top four?
No

English Premier League Champions
Manchester United
The three teams to be relegated from the English Premier League
Pompey, Blackburn, Sunderland
Scottish Premier League Champions
Rangers
Champions League Winners
Real Madrid
The first manager in the English Premier League to be sacked
Sir Harry (God bless him, they'll start like **** and blame him)
The first English Premier League player to be arrested

Will Manchester City finish in the top four?
Yes.

English Premier League Champions
ManU, sadly.
The three teams to be relegated from the English Premier League
Burnley, Portsmouth, Hull (sorry Jaffa).
Scottish Premier League Champions

Champions League Winners
Barca.
The first manager in the English Premier League to be sacked
Roberto Martinez
The first English Premier League player to be arrested
Steven Gerrard, the hothead.
Will Manchester City finish in the top four?
Nope.

Go Celtic!

And here lies the dilema. Do I want to see a Scottish team go through, with 3/5 Scottish teams out of Europe before the season even starts? The further Celtic go, the better for our reputation and UEFA co-efficient. And for them to be distracted from league matters until Christmans. Or do I just want to see our arch rivals get stuffed, and loose all that lovely money to spend on the team (although the Europa cut thingy is a little safety net.)

Think I'll be leaning towards Arsenal on this one.:p

Do you guys even get ESPN?

Woo hoo! Just been added to my Virgin XL package for no extra money!:D
(Eurosport have picked up the PGA golf too):):):)

English Premier League Champions
Liverpool
The three teams to be relegated from the English Premier League
Burnley, Portsmouth, Sunderland
Scottish Premier League Champions
Celtic. Why? New managers normally win, Rangers have sold half the team and replaced nobody. Smith to go by the end of the season and replaced by McCoist. Not what I want to happen, but physic Fuzz has spoken.
Champions League Winners
Real Madrid. They are on the up.
The first manager in the English Premier League to be sacked
Sorry, I can only name the managers of the top flight, and it won't be any of them.
The first English Premier League player to be arrested
Doesn't matter, the charges won't stick.
Will Manchester City finish in the top four?
No. Maybe 5th.

Btw, I hear they looked pretty smart the other night at Ibrox, as did Rangers who only just beat them 3-2. 30,000 attended a pre-season friendly, not bad.

English Premier League Champions
Liverpool

The three teams to be relegated from the English Premier League
Portsmouth, Blackburn, Birmingham

Scottish Premier League Champions
Celtic

Champions League Winners
Barcelona

The first manager in the English Premier League to be sacked
Mark Hughes

The first English Premier League player to be arrested
Micah Richards

Will Manchester City finish in the top four?
No

On a side note, the English Championship kicked off tonight will a drab goal-less draw between Boro and Sheffield United.

I wouldn't have said that drab, there was some good football played at times. However, Middlesbrough didn't score the 5 goals I was hoping for :(

English Premier League Champions
Chelsea (sadly)
The three teams to be relegated from the English Premier League
Birmingham, Portsmouth, Blackburn
Scottish Premier League Champions
Rangers
Champions League Winners
Barcelona
The first manager in the English Premier League to be sacked
The guy at Portsmouth-Paul Hart
The first English Premier League player to be arrested
Ashley Young
Will Manchester City finish in the top four?
No

HAHA awesome! That is 10x more than I thought we would :D should ease the worries a little bit, would be nice to buy a good striker with the money as well, I have to admit I am not sure Madine is ready to make the step up

English Premier League Champions
Man Utd
The three teams to be relegated from the English Premier League
Burnley, Wolves, Hull
Scottish Premier League Champions
Celtic
Champions League Winners
Chelsea
The first manager in the English Premier League to be sacked
Gary Megson
The first English Premier League player to be arrested
Ledley King
Will Manchester City finish in the top four?
No, Everton will

How do you delete a post? I double posted and I can't figure it out :s
You could always report your own post (the little report.gif button down at the bottom left hand corner of your post and point out the accidental double post. A mod will then know to delete it in between smiting newbies. ;)

So – from what we've seen so far – it looks like most of us reckon Portsmouth have some real cause for concern...

Cheers for that :), I actually think Portsmouth will be OK if they aren't forced to sell any more players and obviously avoid administration. They have a few good players, more so than the newly promoted teams
