Will Manchester City finish in the top four?

Nope. Everton or Villa will finish in the top four and Arsenal will finish fifth (sixth?).

So – from what we've seen so far – it looks like most of us reckon Portsmouth have some real cause for concern...
And Mark Hughes!
Personally, I just don't think he's up to what's expected of him by the clubs owners, at least, not yet. I mean, while the club were chasing Kaka, Hughes was chasing Craig Belamy, says it all really!

Don't know, don't care!

Will Manchester City finish in the top four?
Not a chance. The top four will be the usual top four. (I predict mid-table obscurity plus, sadly, the sack for Sparky.)

English Premier League Champions

Have to go with my heart and say Liverpool, they had a decent season last time around and have added some strength. Need perhaps one or two more signing as then there will be a decent chance.

Manchester Untied I feel have become weaker over the summer transfers but they do have a huge squad with lots of strength and depth so you can't not give them a shout.

Chelsea well now they have a proper manager again you can definitely not rule them out and I think they will be pushing a lot more than last time out.

Arsenal I honestly don't think they have the squad to do so. Arshavin has shown that bring some quality in it can make a big big difference. I feel that they need to buy three more top players and then follow the youth team route which has worked reasonably well for them.

The three teams to be relegated from the English Premier League

Hull City, Sunderland, Burnley.

Frank Lampard

Will Manchester City finish in the top four?

They will be fighting for fourth between Aston Villa, Man City, Arsenal and Everton.

Will Newcastle United come back up?

No

Promoted from the Championship

Reading, West Brom.

So – from what we've seen so far – it looks like most of us reckon Portsmouth have some real cause for concern...

And, after a good full day of it (the poll mind you), now Sunderland.
How on Earth did Sunderland stay up anyway? West Brom and Newcastle just to horrible to catch...?

ALSO NOTE:

Rotherham United v Accrington Stanley

Anyone object to ending the season now?

Awful news: Espanyol defender and captain Daniel Jarque, aged 26, has died of heart failure at the team's hotel in Florence. :(

Just saw the new BBC Football league program, too much silly angles trying to show off their studio and there was that glitch when it switched to a woman sitting on the toilet but a semi decent programme. Hopefully it will bed down quickly and we should get a decent level of coverage of the rest of the leagues in the UK.

Anyone object to ending the season now?

If Watford were one place higher and Cardiff some 10 places lower then I could agree.

Just heard this on BBC news 24, quite shocking and sad. :(

Just finished watching the Community Shield between Chelsea/United and have a few thoughts

- Neither Chelsea nor United really came out to me as some sort of dominating team...both really are solid squads but neither are going to run away with the Premier League, imo.
- United does look like it lost something without Ronaldo. That spark just seemed missing.
- Chelsea looked solid for most of the game but I still see a bit of laziness about them that strikes me back to their Scolari play last season. I am NOT saying CA is another Scolari (many differences) but the late goal and overall lack of real hustle the last 10 minutes seemed really obvious to me

In the end, if Chelsea can keep their attack going AND find some way to lock down the sides during their Diamond formation, they should be the favorites for the league.

With that said, United/Liverpool beating them out wouldn't shock me as I see all 3 teams with legit chances to win the League.

We watched it earlier, and we couldn't work out what was going on with the lass on the toilet. We thought it might have been a feature on where Newcastle's season might be heading, but apparently not. :p

I can't say I was hugely impressed, it was trying a bit too hard to be like The Championship at times. It's also not good form to make gaffes with player's names – Ross McCormack plays for Cardiff City, not Lee, and Ian Morris didn't win the penalty for Bluebirds, given that he plays for Scunthorpe. Chris Burke was actually the player in question. Such things aren't going to endear the show to supporters, it just makes the BBC look like they can't be arsed enough about non-Premier League football to do the job properly.

And what the hell was the brick dungeon set all about?

Well the games in Scotland nearly kicked off at the weekend....

If you want a farce, just leave it to the SFL. In brief, Livingston are owned by an Italian chap Angelo Massone but ran into serious financial trouble after they were relegated to the 1st div. Eventually the administrators were called in by the council (who owns their stadium) and the administrators sold them. Massone didn't recognise the administrators and refused to accept he didn't own the team. The SFL then relegated the team to Div 3 because they breached the rules on insolvency. The new owners now want to back out because their takeover isn't financially viable in Div 3. Ayr United got a late promotion into Div 1 as a result, as did Cowdenbeath into Div 2, much re-arranging of league fixtures with one week to go. Livi appealed and then refused to play their Div 3 game on Saturday, I believe the other games went ahead but may be null and void depending on the outcome of the appeal.

I don't see the appeal to be successful and Livi to be defunct by the end of next week which then begs the question will they be replaced 2 weekends into the season (probably not.)

That's 2 Scottish clubs in 2 years, hope that's a warning to the EPL & EFL teams to stop living beyond their means.

...hope that's a warning to the EPL & EFL teams to stop living beyond their means.
Unfortunately, I doubt it. Smaller clubs have been getting into trouble for many years, and all the while the top teams are racking up huge debts. The 20 clubs in the English Premier League, for example, owe more than £3 billion between them. Getting yourself into serious debt in order to compete is now seen as acceptable, but the experiences of certain clubs (Leeds United in particular) highlights the danger of gambling financial stability to chase success.

Nowadays, news that another League One or League Two club has gone into administration goes almost unnoticed outside of its fanbase. But with the huge sums the big boys are now owing, and with banks becoming increasingly twitchy what with credit crunches and all that, it's not a huge stretch of the imagination to see a big team finding itself in serious trouble – and only then will people take notice. If it's Livingston or Chester City (whose opening fixture has also been called off) folk don't care, but if say a club like Liverpool, say, suddenly found themselves in turmoil having to repay their debts sharpish I think the matter would be taken more seriously.

Hull's Turner on his way to Liverpool?
Indeed, Benitez has spoken to Phil Brown and made an enquiry. Liverpool apparently value him at £6million, we reckon he's worth twice that. We'll see how this develops.

Liverpool, by one or two points, or maybe even goal difference.

Despite what He of the Red Nose says, I think we are still a genuine contender. We have some depth problems, it's true, but we still have a fairly deep squad, and our first team is definitely title-winning material. We will rely heavily on Gerrard and Torres, but maybe not quite as heavily as the pundits say.

Sunderland, Portsmouth, Birmingham.

Galacticos Mk II er, Real Madrid. Nothing less will justify the spending.

The first manager in the English Premier League to be sacked

Mark Hughes...has to be the guy under the most pressure at the moment.

The first English Premier League player to be arrested

Ashley Cole (this is actually a tough question now that Joey Barton is in the Championship).

Will Manchester City finish in the top four?

No. Arsenal's first team is still too good. Man City will finish sixth.

Can't wait to see Jozy and the Tigers take the pitch. :)

...although right now I'm waiting impatiently for the USA-Mexico qualifier. If we beat them I hear we might be able to steal a seeded spot in the World Cup. It will be a very, very tough game.

Strangely my first thought is how much will he cost in our fantasy premier league game.

Good point. I just might have to sell Sturridge and pick him up.

Just a quick reminder that the English Premier League season starts this Saturday (August 15).

He's right you know. The MRFPL and swiftaw's Premier League Predictathon are both exercises in high aceness and shame on anyone who hasn't signed up. :p

Strangely my first thought is how much will he cost in our fantasy premier league game.
Er, me too.

Anyway, following on from my good news – some bad news. I've heard an unpleasant rumour that the referee appointed for our opening game against Chelsea this Saturday is none other than my arch nemesis Mr M Riley (West Yorks). Regular readers may remember I don't like him very much, an opinion forged during our match against Burnley a couple of years ago where he sent off four players and ruined a fantastic game in the process. Add in his performances when we played Sunderland and Arsenal last season, and I could very happily see him smacked repeatedly about the head with a cricket bat.

You may also recall me saying he was retiring to become Head Referee of something – turns out that he doesn't actually take over the post until 1st September. Looks like he's been given us as a little retirement present...

Mind, I've also heard that Stephen Hunt is having a medical with us. That's cheered me up a bit. Just a bit, mind.
