I want to see the USA make an impression in the knockout phase of the tournament, and I want to have a better showing than rivals Mexico this time around.

I think they really need to finish with the top seed in CONCACAF to reduce the odds of ending up in a Group of Death. Even if they win at Honduras Oct. 10th, they still need to beat Costa Rica at home on the 14th. Mexico, for all it's problems, will probably beat El Salvador and Trinidad, so winning out is the only way the US stays in first. All of this was made easier by Costa Rica getting upset by a late goal last night.

Today the obvious finally occurred to me: it will be winter weather in South Africa for WC '10. I wonder how much that will affect the games. Crazy upsets are even more likely if a top team can't get a rhythm going in the rain.

Honduras away will be a tough match - but we need to win it to prove we are ready for the World Cup. Costa Rica is not a guaranteed result either.

But getting the seeded spot is definitely worth it.

Meanwhile, some interesting team news ahead of our Turner-tastic trip to Tyne and Wear tomorrow. It seems that the Mackems are suffering a bit of a goalkeeping crisis, with their two main custodians – Craig Gordon and Márton Fülöp – doubts due to injury.

This leaves Steve Bruce having to choose between giving a debut to an untested rookie 'keeper –*Trevor Carson – or re-registering his goalkeeping coach and playing him. By curious twist of fate the coach in question is Alan Fettis, a bit of a Tigers' favourite after a couple of spells in the East Riding...

playing in a hot country like South Africa
It's going to be a collldddd World Cup, which will probably play into our hands. But we still won't win.

Note that the world cup, sorry, FIFA World CupTM will be held 11 June to 11 July and being in the southern hemisphere it will be winter, a chilly 16 DegC max. Sounds ideal!

I can't help thinking if the SFA were going to sack George Burley they would have done it on Wednesday night. Besides I don't think they've got the money to pay him off (2 years left on his contract.) So it's back to the grind of the SPL tomorrow.

Well, I guess Scotland don't have a competitive fixture to worry about until the Euro qualifiers, so they have a little time to decide...but if they were going to sack him I would have think they'd have done it by now.

So we can't blame our inevitable Quarter-Final exit on the weather conditions? Blimey – we're going to need a better excuse.

Clearly then the Germans/Brazilians/Dutch/Papua New Guineans will cheat us out of it...

If Eduardo gets a two match ban for diving, I wonder what punishment Adebayor will receive for stamping on someones face?

His running the length of the pitch to celebrate his goal in front of the travelling Arsenal support won't exactly be counted in his favour either. Having seen the Van Persie incident replayed from various angles, Adebayor's protestations of innocence aren't particularly impressive.

Interesting to see such condemnation of Adebayor's actions from the MotD regulars a short while ago – Alan Shearer knows a bit about kicking another player in the head, of course...

Incidentally, a steward was taken to hospital after being hit by an object apparently thrown from the Arsenal section. The Police are investigating.

A real statement from Man City, ruined by Adebayor's childishness...he's going to pay for that, I imagine.

Wenger didn't see the kick apparently, but the photos on the BBC seem to indicate Adebayor's boot left its mark...

Liverpool played well today, granted it was Burnley but they had a few good spells of their own and Liverpool responded well. Hopefully this gives us some confidence.

Condolences Jaffa.

Sigh. I had hopes for Arsenal this season, but these last two losses hurt. I liked Adebayor. His behaviour today was childish even by football player standards.

van Persie's statement seems fair to me - I hope Adebayor is punished sufficiently, disgusting kick, only centimetres away from his eye too.

We need to start winning these games where we create plenty and dominate.

Interesting to see what Adebayor will get. Ban? Fine? Ban plus fine? how many games? I'm sure the ref will say he didn't see it, because if he did I'd have to think it would be a straight red.
Don't think the ref is allowed to give anything more than a yellow for the offense, although the FA will probably take a dim view of it, and I expect it'll just be a fine.

Honestly, even with the antics, Man City's W is still the biggest story....well, to me that is.

Ass kicking which blew me away

Only time will tell if they've finally mounted a real challenge - but given their resources and squad they should certainly make a challenge for the top four this year and at the very least be in the Europa league next season. Time is certainly on their side, as long as the cash keeps flowing.

It seemed more of a rake than a kick to me, and as XIII says given the proximity to Van Persie's eye the Dutchman can perhaps count himself rather lucky he didn't come off worse.

I expect a ban for Adebayor, I can't see how he'd get away with his antics. Three games, I'll guess.
