Good result for Everton this weekend...even though it annoyingly was the only Sunday match not shown on TV here in Norway. What's up with that Canal+?

I was a bit worried after last match against Fulham, but hopefully they now can turn things around in the league. Fifth place or better year after year might be too much to ask (;)), but the team should be in the top half and battling for a place in Europe, I think...

And speaking of Europe: So far the results have been excellent. What do you think, does Everton have a fighting chance to go all the way in the Europe League (or whatever they renamed the UEFA cup to this season)?

Having seen Everton play in the league, before last week I thought 'oh dear!' and was expecting Moyes to be the first Premiership manager to be looking for a new job. However, after watching them in the Europa League last week, if they keep playing as they did then, and again on Saturday, then they'll be fine, and probably battling over 5th-6th spot, but, "football's a funny old game!" ;)

Next up for Everton is a League Cup tie against us at the KC – I for one will be interested to see what sort of team we put out.

As for the Europa League, for Everton a lot will depend on the teams they're drawn against and also avoiding injuries to key players. Their squad is better equipped than that of, say, Fulham, but it's a competition that can take its toll on teams. I think they can have a reasonable stab at it, though.

Last season Everton had a thin squad, especially when it came to attacking players...if they can keep their starters healthy, I think they could have a good showing the Europa league.

Tim Howard = top keeper. Don't wear the boy out though, USA needs him for the WC qualifiers in October!

Tim Vickery wrote a good article at the BBC about the new quota rule, pointing out that it worsens rather than solves the "cradle snatching"...teams will be taking kids even earlier now. He focused on South America, of course, but I think it makes a lot of sense.

That shouldn't be a problem. We'll most likely be knocked out of the domestic cups soon enough :)o), and the Euro League shouldn't wear him out.

And it would be interesting if Iain Turner gets a few matches, if he's fit, just to see if he has it in him. He's been in the club "forever", but just played a handful matches over the years...

i fear for bigger/ more known clubs it's not as easy anymore in the euro league... as it was seen in the first round with basel winning against roma, salzburg vs lazio, hapoel tel aviv vs. celtic, rapid vs hamburg sv

you can't just, like the HSV tried in vienna, show up and get points by default anymore... in the end the HSV went home with a lucky 0:3 loss .. and that as the leader of the german bundesliga

Heard anything on Moyes' plans for the League Cup, Mitty – how strong a side do you reckon your lot will put out?
Nah, I have no idea. They've probably not thought about it, yet, between the disastrous league start and the European qualifiers and first group match.

But - if I were to guess - I think you might see a couple of the ones normally on the bench will get a chance. I can see him save Saha and let Jo start and then have Yakubu in hand for some much needed match time.

I wouldn't be surprised if Gosling and Fellani starts in stead of Osman, Cahill and/or Rodwell, and maybe just "Billy" on the left, resting Pienaar (at least from start).

Not sure he'll mess too much with the defence, though. They need some more matches together, and there's not too many fit players to choose from with Jageilka and Neville out...

I think the match is too early for Arteta and Anichebe, though if any of them are fit enough to make a short appearance I'd be very, very pleased... ;)

Either way, even if Moyes decides to spare a few key players, and only a few, the replacements aren't much worse than the regulars. :)

Then again, Moyes might do something completely unexpected... :p

...And let's not forget CFR Cluj, who beat Roma and held Chelski to a 0-0 draw last season in the CL.

I've heard a further explanation on the extraordinary time keeping in the Manchester derby (as explained by a United fan! :D)

Added time is of course always a minimum. 4 minutes was the official number for stoppage time; apparently refs generally add 30 seconds for substitutions. Fergie made a late substitution in order to tack on a half-minute, and (according to this United fan) City's goal celebration lasted 80 seconds or so; tack on an additional 10 seconds of Old Trafford Time (love that Jaffa), and you have a total added time of about two minutes. In addition, the United fan in question expressed the opinion that 30 seconds is too short for a substitution, and the refs should allow 45 seconds for subs.

I expect the United fan in question to recant all of this should they lose to a late goal deep in stoppage time later in the season. :D

(Thanks for fixing that double post Mitty, and keeping me from looking like a real n00b....)

Well, Hughes said it was about 45 seconds from scoring to kicking off again.
See! See how they do that? Even Man U fans are at it! :p

Accrington Stan... oh, sorry. Force of habit.

We actually have two American-born players now (custodian Boaz Myhill, although a Welsh International, was born in California), so clearly we're following the Fulham template for success.

Ah, good to know that!;)thanks

and yeah Fulham FC is nice, since Clint Dempsey (U.S National Midfielder) plays for Fulham!:D:D

Robbed? By Scousers?! Surely not! ;)

Ah well. Outplayed Liverpool, outsung their STILL overrated fans. Good night.
Never mind, you may be out of the League Cup but you're still in the nation's finest cup competition. :)

More classic lines from Arsene Wenger. When asked about yesterday's incident between Jack Wilshire and West Brom's Jerome Thomas,

BBC said:
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger claimed he missed the incident and said: "My eyes aren't great and my ears are worse."

:D

I read that earlier myself, and my he certainly is deteriorating with age isn't he? One can only hope his voice goes next...

Anyway, League Cup fun with Everton tonight. As my season ticket doesn't cover Cup games I'm going to pay at the gate with the great unwashed. It'll be like a proper little adventure.
