Henry's handball was too blatant to not have been called. Stonewall free kick to the irish.

Shocking refereeing

Henry, the French team & the Referee should all write personal apologetic letters to the Irish team for that daylight robbery

Well I think the overreaction is hilarious. I lost count of how many times Keane handballed last night. Had one of those created a goalscoring opportunity do you really think he would have put his hands up and admitted he fouled? No. I don't think he would either.

It's football. These things happen.

Speaking of which, I had some lovely French toast this morning made with lovely French bread. You've just got to hand it to the French.

I mean for Christ's sake how hard is it to add a tv monitor set-up with a fifth official somewhere in the stadium and taking one minute to confirm game decisions?
Officially it doesn't happen, but decisions have been influenced in the past by what the fourth official has seen on a monitor, and has then relayed to the referee.

For some reason, I don't think last night's incident will persuade Platini on this particular debate.

Anyway, after last night that's three City players off the plane to South Africa. Boo!

Well, the BBC are hosting a Live Reaction to the Henry handball incident. Honestly, why??? It's not as if a referee has never made a bad decision before. I can understand the fans being peeved, but calls for France to be disqualified, or the game to be replayed? Talk about over reaction. While ever video evidence isn't used, these sort of things will always happen

Uh, because the BBC makes money by selling ads and want as many people as possible with their eyeballs glued to the BBC?

I did not see the France-Ireland game, but based on the match reports France doesn't have much to cheer about - a lucky result but they can't handball their way through the finals....

There's still a lot of time for France to improve before the big show next summer but with Domenech at the helm will we really see a lot of improvement.

So Ireland joins Russia and the Ukraine in the "good sides that won't be in the WC Finals" category. I try to imagine how USA would fit in with those three if we were in a qualifying group together...a USA-Russia match would be fun.

Why not...?

It's been done before:

Well said. Finally some common sense. The people I've been talking to are absolutely delusional. Some are even saying there should be a rematch. lol

I think a lot of people are going to knock the US off many of their brackets, and I think that is going to be a mistake. They have taking major steps into building a soccer organization, and I think they will be more prepared than they were the previous World Cup. I wouldnt pick them as one of the favorites just yet, but depending on who else is in their group, I wouldnt be surprised to see them advance. I think we are going to see the US be a consistant top 7-8 team in the world in the next few years (currently 11th).

There are no adverts on the BBC, it is financed by the TV Licence fees.

Not even on the websites?

It's true. No commercial ads on the BBC, be it the telly or the web.

The downside of this is that when they're showing a match we get a full 15 minutes of half-time punditry drivel with no respite.

There are ads on the BBC website if you access it from outside the UK. If you access it from inside the UK, no ads.

For me ads started appearin on the BBC earlier this week, but I wasn't sure if it was a new policy or because I work for a big Yankee company*. Not sure how the servers are routed. Forgot to check in the house.

THIERRY HENRY is a cheat...
FRANCE is a cheat...
FIFA doesn't care...

Well, the BBC are hosting a Live Reaction to the Henry handball incident. Honestly, why??? It's not as if a referee has never made a bad decision before.

So what is FIFA's astute reaction? Did Ref get the boot? Did Henry get kicked off France team? No... wink and a nod... France gets to World Cup, Ireland doesn't, and nothing happens. Why is it that every fan saw what happened on pitch except the Refs assigned to watch for it? Then when it does happen why doesn't Ref/FIFA act?

I can understand the fans being peeved, but calls for France to be disqualified, or the game to be replayed?

Both are appropriate measures of response. A red card suspension for THIERRY HENRY for entire World Cup is even better.

Talk about over reaction. While ever video evidence isn't used, these sort of things will always happen

A red card suspension for Henry is the least response required at this time , as well as a perma-ban for Head Ref and Linesmen for further World Cup referee responsibilities. There is no reason game cannot be replayed except for the fact that without cheating by Henry & France, Ireland likely would have won this contest.

The apologia that this sort of thing "happens all the time" does not excuse it nor should it be used to explain why no penalty is being served to either France or THIERRY HENRY for clear and obvious cheating their way to World Cup at Ireland's expense.

Roy Keane disagrees...

By the way, his mini-rant over the ringing cell-phone during the interview is hysterical - that man must be a right b*stard to live with!

It's annoying to see high-profile no-calls like this (or like the three handballs in the box by RSL that saw Columbus get dumped from the MLS playoffs).

BUT, ultimately I can't see doing a replay over this. It was the ref's job to call it. IF the ball was kept in by a manager or unused substitute or other, OUTSIDE influence then I think Ireland would have a good argument. But it was simply an uncalled foul. I would still be angry if I was an Ireland supporter but that handball was not the only decisive moment in the game, and as others have mentioned Robbie Keane got away with handballs as well.

Should Thierry Henry feel a little sheepish? Yes, if he has any dignity. But should the game be replayed? No. Of course, this will fuel the eternal debate over video replay.

Even Thierry Henry is asking for a replay...

Replay 'fairest solution' says Henry

Roy Keane's opinion is just about worthless now; down about equal with the janitorial staff...

We'll have that replay... they're scheduling it now..

Just watched SKY Sports news during lunch and they showed a group of angry Ireland supporters standing outside the French Embassy demanding a replay. One was wearing a large frog costume....<slaps forehead>. I half expected Father Ted to walk into the frame.:D

Sounds to me like Henry is handling this with class. Here are his words on the incident.
"Naturally I feel embarrassed at the way that we won and feel extremely sorry for the Irish who definitely deserve to be in South Africa," said Henry. "Of course the fairest solution would be to replay the game but it is not in my control.''

Henry's character has been strongly called into question following the incident but the Barcelona striker is adamant that the handball was nothing more than an "instinctive reaction" and that he is not a cheat.

"There is little more I can do apart from admit that the ball had contact with my hand leading up to our equalising goal and I feel very sorry for the Irish," Henry said.

"I have said at the time and I will say again that yes I handled the ball. I am not a cheat and never have been. It was an instinctive reaction to a ball that was coming extremely fast in a crowded penalty area.

"As a footballer you do not have the luxury of the television to slow the pace of the ball down 100 times to be able to make a conscious decision. People are viewing a slow motion version of what happened and not what I or any other footballer faces in the game.

"If people look at it in full speed you will see that it was an instinctive reaction. It is impossible to be anything other than that. I have never denied that the ball was controlled with my hand. I told the Irish players, the referee and the media this after the game.''

Or for those of you who are so inclined to read it in the original:

Good for them... I'm with them in solidarity for the Irish National Team, World Cup sportsmanship, and fairness on the pitch...
