Not looking good at this point. I agree, looked like the ball crossed over.

I give the US credit. They scored goals and played hard.

But they looked exhausted beyond belief in the 2nd half. They played too far back, They didn't fill the gaps, and they just didn't seem to have half the hussle they did previously

The fact that Brazil won 3-2 shows that the US is just about there in taking on the best national teams in the world--it's actually a pretty good showing considering that the American team got blown off the field just over one week ago by the same Brazilian team.

It's also proof that while Spain has excellent club level teams their national team still has a habit of failing at the worst time possible, Euro 2008 excepted!

Uhh not really.. which is the "worst time possible" - a bizarre tournament few people care about semi-final, or the Euro 2008 final? You can't just 'except' it! While the USA have clearly done well, I still believe it was a freak result - ie. if you played that game 50 times, the majority wouldn't go the way they did.

It's football, these things happen (Hull beat Arsenal  ;)).

To be fair, Spain historically have a reputation for underachievement at international level that rivals that of England and the Dutch. Their win at Euro 2008 was well overdue, but certainly pleased a lot of people – once again, like Hull City beating Arsenal. :D ;)

If something happens out of the ordinary, I do think you can "except" it from the usual results.

Spain had a very legitimate stigma attached to them for under-achievement before Euro 2008

I'm crushed that we didn't win, but we've just come off two unbelievable games that were physically taxing, plus we lost Bradley to a card that IMO should not have been a sending off. No excuses though, we simply ran out of gas at the end.

This has been the national team's greatest triumph ever, make no mistake. We are not among the best teams in the world, and probably won't be for years. BUT we are a team every other national side has to fear, and I think we could make a big impact in the World Cup. Every USA fan can hold his head high today.

I also hope this tournament results in some of our European-based players like Altidore and Spector getting more playing time...

What I am saying is look at the current crop of Spanish players - you can't talk about the achievements or lack of achievements by previous national teams as they have no effect on the current one. In recent times then: went on a very convincing unbeaten run, perhaps should have done better in the World Cup in Germany, won Euro 2008, and as a footnote, lost in a game against the US. I say as a footnote because don't believe this tournament is anything anyone cares about - it is nothing. The Euros and the World Cup are obviously the only real prizes in national football for Spain.

Looking at that recent record, from the last 4 years.. I'd say the loss "proves" nothing, that's what I took exception to - saying that losing in one game (which happens to every team on unexpected occasions) proves they fail at the worst time possible... this is far from the worst time possible!

Very pleased with our performance. Especially after the spanking the "brazzucas" gave us in the first go round.

Hats off to our young men. I am usually one of their harshest critics. ;)

I'm going to look gorgeous wearing that. :)

Heh. Prepare to repel boarders. :D

I'll say this, it confused some people during the last season we were in plain amber. Sky ran quite a few clip packages for both City and Wolves which actually featured some footage from the other club's matches.

The fools.

I see you've just signed Kevin Doyle, Olly
Wolves sign Kevin Doyle for £6.5m

Yes, it looks like we are going to invest a bit this time around.

Last time we got promoted, it took us by surprise and we we were in no way prepared for it. We ended up panic buying with just a couple of weeks before the season started and most of the signings were not up to scratch. The two things we looked for in a player last time were......

  1. Was he available on a free transfer
  2. Would he sign for us

We have to have new kits every year, as part of our deal with Umbro. It's somewhat unfortunate as last season's home shirt was excellent.

Apparently, Umbro have a policy of switching between plain and striped versions of our kit, using the assumption that people wouldn't buy a striped shirt two seasons running because it would 'look too similar' to the previous year's. Personally, I don't see the problem at all – supporters of Newcastle United, Sunderland and all the other be-striped clubs (including of course Wednesday) don't have any issues with it. We must be a bit thick here in the East Riding, it would seem, not being able to tell the difference.

Personally, I think the blue away would look better with white shorts to break it up a bit. I do like the new home shirt – although I generally prefer proper thick stripes – but I think this updated version of a 1980s classic looks rather smart. I prefer it to Umbro's plain effort from 2007/08.

What do you reckon to it, R?

Meanwhile, our young men lost the Under-21 European Championship Final earlier this evening, 4-0 at the hands of the dastardly Germans. Bah!

Right, next job – get Fraizer home and get him signed.

the real scary thing is that the germans are current reigning U17,U19, and U21 european champions at the same time (though only until july with this years U19 were they aren't starting)
looks like their youth improvements after the 1998 fiasco really paid of long term wise

it's gonna be interesting how this coming generation will fare internationally compared to the so called "weak generation" (like the german press likes to call them) of the last 10 years where the germans only were vice-world champions, vice euro champions and made it two further times into the semi finals...

Generally the previous season's shirts are sold off cheap, but given that we ran out of replica clobber months ago you'd be hard pressed to find any.

The thing is, clubs have to order their stock in well in advance of the season. When we ordered for 2008/09, Premier League football was a possibility but a faint one. As a result, we were unprepared for the demands of the thousands of new supporters we mysteriously acquired after 24th May 2008. Apparently Umbro weren't especially helpful when it came to getting new stock, we managed to get a consignment in just in time for Christmas but obviously those soon went. It's one reason why I doubt we'll be renewing our deal with Umbro when it expires at the end of the upcoming season.

We were at the club shop last weekend, as it happens. They had a grand total of three 2008/09 home shirts left, all in odd sizes and at full price if memory serves.

It was a beautiful kit. You're right none to be found on the team site.

All right, finally some concrete transfer news starting to trickle in. Looks like Antonio Valencia's move from Wigan to Man Utd is a done deal. He's no straight up replacement for CR7 but I like his pace, power, and passing ability. He'll be a solid long term replacement for Giggs. Further, as a follower of Ecuador's national team I'm glad to see him coming over to Old Trafford - he has been an excellent performer in international competition.

I guess another Ecuadorian is heading to the Premiereship with defender Geovanny Espinoza signing for Birmingham City. And Caicedo is still at Man City. (And Castillo at Everton.)
