Anyway it's the 1st of July and the Premiership has been full of player transfers.... Sorry have I missed something?
It's been a bit quiet so far – apart from a handful of big transfer stories – but given that today is the day that a lot of players are out of contract, and are thus free agents, I expect the pace to pick up a bit over the next week or so.

Hull are doing their usual, what the f**k do we do trick. Oh I heard so-and-soo is available lets offer him a contract and then wait whilst everyone else catches up and offers a better deal.
See, other clubs have clear transfer targets, while we go for the 'get messed around and then panic buy' option.

Clint Dempsey has supposedly rejected a contract extension from Fulham, and it looks like Everton are moving to snap him up...

Hmm...that puts me in a weird space as a Liverpool fan. I was going to buy a Fulham shirt with Dempsey's name on the back - but if he goes to Everton, I'd expect some burly Reds fans to burn my house down if I got an Everton shirt - and I'll bet my Liverpool shirt would refuse to allow the newcomer into my closet anyway.:D

Ah well, I guess I'll just get a USA away kit with his name on it.

And that, your Lordship, is the reason why having a name printed on the back of your shirt is folly - they'll either leave the club or snap both legs and never play again. Having an England shirt printed seems even dafter, as player's shirt numbers often change from match to match.

Unless of course you go a bit retro with the names, I've always said if I get a number on my shirt it will be Barnes - 10.

I had a quick thought dabble to get Mascherano when I bought last seasons shirt but at the time decided it was unfair on Kuyt.

On a slightly related note in the Liverpool calendar I have up in my girlfriends bedroom :)D) December is Robbie Keane :D

This is an option, I remember seeing a load of West Ham fans when they came up to play us, sporting 'Moore 6' on the back of their polyester rags.

I have actually had a shirt printed in the past – it was a couple of sesons ago when we had a sponsor's logo positioned in the small of the back and I thought it looked awful without anything on. After much deliberation I got 'Nineteen 04' put on there, 1904 being the year Hull City was formed.

I also think one reason why manufacturers sometimes put the panels on the back of striped shirts is to encourage folk to get a name put on, as they look a bit daft without one on there. Kerr-ching, as the tills might say.

I prefer blank as well.

Dempsey gets to play with Howard... cool.

Meanwhile, rumblings that free agent Michael Owen might be bound for... the treatment table at Old Trafford!

Fixed

To be honest Michael Owen has lost his Goal-Factor. Ineffectual at best, perhaps he will do better at Utd if it goes through perhaps not. I just don't rate him as a big four player anymore, squad player at best. For the likes of 7-12th place teams he is a risk he would likely be injured for a long time. For 13-20th teams he is a risk as his high wages would cause extra strain on the club, add the injuries he could pose a serious threat to survival for the next season.

I grew a disliking to Owen a long time ago. His antics about leaving Liverpool and then failing and then come crying back expecting a place back at Liverpool is not good. Now if he moves to Manchester Utd just shows he is a wage monkey.

Yes I know most footballers are ...

That's a pretty fair assessment. If Owen can be brought back to full fitness, if he can maintain fitness and if he's in a team where he's going to get good service, then there's a good likelihood he'll score goals. But that's a lot of ifs. Clubs near the foot of the table may well decide that he represents too much of a risk, while the bigger clubs could probably find better talent that isn't as high maintenance.

One of Owen's key attributes – his pace – has gone, not surprising given his injuries, but has he also lost his appetite for the game? It's all very well wanting a move to Manchester United or Everton and using it as a platform to try and get in the England team, but what if the only option open to him ends up being a team at the other end of the table – will he have the stomach for it? I certainly can't see him coming here, for one thing.

Anyway – forget Owen. If we're talking players available on a free transfer this summer, I challenge anyone to find a bigger name than this guy.

I'm referring to the Dutchman, of course.

You say Owen has lost his pace, which he has, but when I watched him play for Newcastle against Hull in the FA Cup I was amazed by his little soft passes and clever balls that no-one else in the Newcastle team could read. He look so frustrated when he made some space and hit a great cross field pass only for there to be no-one there making the run.

I think if he can stay healthy....yada yada yada... but really healthy is the key.

Wise words, both of you. My Liverpool shirt sports a "Gerrard - 8" on the back, which is a pretty safe bet (though I do admit I considered a Crouch shirt ). Considering how critical I was of Kuyt in the 07-08 season I probably should get him on an away shirt as penance. My USA home kit is nameless, but I think unless you have a Fernando Torres in your national team you should not bother with names on national shirts...though I'm prepared to make an exception for Clint Dempsey...

Retro is good but I have to admit that I'm too much a newcomer to really be talking about great players past.

Re: Owen. I think he's a massive injury risk - I think his goalscoring talent is unquestioned, but he is slower than he used to be and will only be a factor if he proves that he can put in the shifts and stay off the treatment table. I see him as a big gamble that might pay off - but could also be a huge, expensive flop.

Experienced 4th forward, 15-18 games a season, more chances created for him than at Newcastle United, potential upside for England - what's the problem?

Cheers,
OW

The main problem seems to be that his bones are made from Lego and his tendons are fashioned from tissue paper.

Okay, experienced 4th forward, 2 games a season, more chances created for him than at Newcastle United, potential upside for England - what's the problem?:)

He'll be better suited to cricket – no penalty decisions to mess up and they're allowed to use video technology there.

Don't forget his hamstrings. They are balloons full of nitro glycerin.
That's the thing, he doesn't actually have any hamstrings anymore. Liverpool medical staff removed them and tried fusing them with Fernando Torres' to try and sort the Spaniard's dodgy ones out.

What's a "quick" medical? Did they verify he has a pulse or was there more to it than that.
I imagine it's probably like when the school nurse comes around and you have a quick check up. They'll look in his ears with one of those magnifying torch thingies, ask him to read letters off a chart, and have the nit nurse have a good rake around with her comb.
