Curling on Comcast in Philly right now:eek:

Curling is awesome. Love it.

I went curling when I was in Jr. High...... we had activity days, and every Wed for 3 weeks you participated in the activity that you signed up for. I chose curling because I was curious to try it. I'm glad I did- it was a lot of fun. My team won the tourny in the second year (which I 'skipped'- that means I captained it).

I'm watching a few minutes of the USA/SUI game. 3-1 now, SUI just broke Miller's shutout. I wish I had time to sit around all day and watch hockey.....:(

USA-SUI hockey game wasn't too bad really. The Swiss came back pretty strong in 3rd period and the US team lucked out on a couple of occasions. Hopefully they get to tighten the game up before playing against Canada and Russia. Looks promising.

I had to PVR the Canada game because I'm just too busy during the day. It's hard to ignore all sports sites all day! On the plus side, I got to FFWD the commercials and the stops in play......

I just finished watching it now. A good game by Canada. You could tell that they're still getting used to playing with each other. Obviously, things started coming together in the 3rd period.

Some impressions: Luongo didn't have to do too much. I like Iginla playing with Crosby and Nash. Heatley's goals were awesome. Jeremy Roenick sucks as a commentator.

Time to watch Lost........:D

Aww, poor Norway got whooped bad by the great Canada. Seriously, i felt a little bad for them, for goalie especially. :) Today is the big day for us Fins, geesh im so excited! Woosaah!

Gotta luv the kids Kane,Ryan,Brown:) Ryan Miller is a beast too...:D

Wow..... four years to the day that Switzerland beat Canada, they almost do it again! Hiller almost stole one for the Swiss. I'm glad that Sid the Kid is on our team.......

I wish I could have watched the game...... unfortunately I had to write an exam...... one down, one to go.

Oh, and Bob Costas sucks. That is all.

I watched the shootout at restaurant and it went nuts when Canada won. But man... disappointing shootout at the end. Some terrible shots

Yup. Shootouts suck. I'd take 20 minute overtime periods until someone scores a goal over shootouts any day. That's why nothing beats the NHL Playoffs.

Imagine.....
Basketball: uses a 3-point shoot out to decide the winner.
Football: uses a field goal kicking competition to decide the winner.
Baseball: a homerun hitting competition.

Hockey's a team sport and the team should decide the outcome, not the individual.

/off soapbox

Good luck with the remaining exam!!!

Hopefully you'll have some time on Sunday....

Regular season; no OT just shoot out
Playoff play til the death.

the problem with the current NHL point scheme is some games are 3 point games and some are 2.
Every game should be 3 points
3 for the win
2 for the win in shoot out/OT
1 for the tie
zip for a loss in regulation

Also if a team is short handed going into the shoot out they forfeit a shot for each player in the box.

What's the title of your exam " How Team USA Beat Team Canada " :p:D:cool:

Peace

Congrats to Selänne for becoming the leading scorer in Olympics! :) Great game all in all against Germany.

Yeah we'll see about that toughguy....:D

Unfortunately, my exam is a bastard of an advanced accounting exam.

Congrats to Selänne for becoming the leading scorer in Olympics! :) Great game all in all against Germany.

I've always liked Teemu. Especially in the last few years, he's played with more grit.

I still remember his insane rookie season when he scored 76 goals with the Winnipeg Jets.....

i actually like the shootouts, its man vs goalie.

I don't think that you'll fit in too well in Canada with that opinion......;)

Well, it's a gimmick to try to tap into the American market who are uninterested in hockey, so it's understandable that you like them. The theory was that Americans don't understand ties, and that's why there aren't a lot of American fans. A shootout makes it so that there aren't ties anymore. Funny, the Game worked just fine for 90-something years without a shootout......

Exciting or not (I agree that, at times, they can be exciting), an individual competition doesn't belong in a team sport.

Most players aren't fans of it: imagine working hard, sweating and bleeding, together as a team for 65 minutes to have the outcome come down to a couple of guys on the team.

Why a shootout? Maybe the home team should have a choice between a shootout, a fastest skater race, a deking content, or whoever can make the fastest line change.

I think we would have all enjoyed another period (or more) of overtime game. So for us, the fans, it would be great! And it would be fair too, because you're sticking to the original game rules and simply give the teams some more time to prove themselves. The reality of the competition is such that some of these teams play another game the following day. So if I try to put myself in the shoes (or skates) of one of these players, would I rather play some more to prove that we can win (or lose), or would I rather have rules that help put a closure to this so that I start concentrating on another fight tomorrow? I think it is asking a lot of these guys to have them come up on the ice just the following day, and still expect a great performance from them. Since their opponent may not have played the previous day, and as such is more rested, I don't think it would have actually been very fair. We want both teams competing on as equal a footing as possible, which means that they both should have had enough time to rest, rather than have them coming exhausted from a very tight game from the previous night.

With that in mind, and regardless of whether I like shootouts or not, I suggest that there is a need for some type of a game closure process that occurs after the expiration of the standard 3-period game time. The shootout has been selected (just like in soccer) to be the most effective way to bring the game to an end. To all parties enjoying, and participating in, the game, this is not an ideal, but a fair outcome.

Unfortunately, the shootout has always been a part of international competition. They aren't using NHL rules at the Olympics.

Teams sometimes play back to back nights in the NHL playoffs, and sometimes they go to 1, 2, or 3 or more overtime periods. The NHL playoffs consist of the best hockey in the world. The overtimes do not diminish the quality of the games.
