BUDAPEST, Hungary — Ferrari driver Felipe Massa underwent surgery on life-threatening skull injuries Saturday from a high-speed crash during Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying.

"During the course of his examination they established that he suffered a serious, life-threatening injuries, including loss of consciousness and a fracture of the forehead on the left side and a fracture on the base of the skull."

Massa underwent surgery about an hour after arriving at the hospital. Hospital doctors subsequently said his condition was "serious, life threatening but stable" at a news conference, but ultimately ruled the Formula One driver was in "stable, satisfactory condition."

He's lucky he managed to regain consciousness in time to slam on the brakes and down the gears.

The F1 telemetry screen was up during the incident and it looked like the throttle remained at wide-open as well as full-braking which might explain why he still plowed into the tires and why the engine remained on after the impact with the tires ended. You could also see his front tires alternately lock and then unlock.

AEK military hospital medical director Peter Bazso added: "At the moment he's under anaesthetic and will be woken up on Sunday."

They didn't explain why in the commentary, what is the difference between that move and webbers in the last grand prix.

Webber was pretty dodgy on that pit lane move.

Now, what chance of a Ferrari penalty for the first corner incident??? If he does get a 25 second penalty it would drop him down to 6th if he had been given a penalty when the incident happened, he'd be way down the pack and out of the points.
 
Think there is quite a bid history of wheels coming of and hitting other drivers or going of into the crowd so not that surprised by the ban. Although I do still find it a bit comical when the wheel goes rolling of into the distance a bit like in a cartoon.
 
Everyone is probably a bit gun-shy after Surtee's son was killed last weekend at Brand's Hatch by an errant wheel. Plus with Massa in the hospital due to being clobbered with a spring, I can see why the stewards might be a bit draconian in the penalties.

As to why Kimi was not given a drive-through, but instead a deferred judgment, the SPEED/FOX TV folks noted that the stewards probably wanted to make sure that Kimi's move was not defensive in nature. In Germany, it was clear MW's move was "deliberate" (I put quotes around that because MW himself said he thought he was clear and I do not wish to imply/accuse him of willfully attempting to take a competitor out).

I guess after last weekend and Saturday letting a car on the track with a loose wheel wasn't a clever thing to do.

I think it's one of the funniest things to happen this year! :p
Spaniards have only gotten interested in F1 because of Alonso, and two years ago you could see everybody wearing caps, shirts and everything with the Renault logo and his face. He was everywhere, everytime. And now this... :D TAKE THAT!

Yeah, maybe the fact that they cut Valencia only for a car race for three weeks, making life miserable for people who live there plays its role in me being so happy with this decision.
 
Will this set a precedent? In the future will any engineering fault or pit stop error result in that team being banned for one race? Will Brawn not be allowed to race in Valencia?

Brawn (hopefully) had no idea that their spring could break off, Renault knew the wheel was not attached correctly but didn't warn Fernando. In fact, he calledd back to the team thinking he had a puncture.

Agreed. And again, that was just erie. It looked like someone had thrown that spring at Massa. So spook, did it just bounce around on the track until Massa collected it?

He's either a lucky little nut or a tough ittle nut. His wreck at the A1 ring was very violent and he and Sato( I think it was Sato) were both more or less ok. Godspeed Felipe. :apple:

Doctors reveal Massa's left eye damaged

Doctors say it is too early to judge whether Felipe Massa will race again after it was revealed on Monday that the Brazilian suffered damage to his left eye in his Hungarian Grand Prix crash.

Massa is still in hospital recovering from a skull fracture and concussion after he was hit in the face by a spring from Rubens Barrichello's car.

Local media quoted the hospital's professor Robert Veres from Budapest as saying that the eye injury could be enough to end Massa's F1 career.

"He has suffered some damage to the eye," said Veres. "We don't know whether he'll be able to race again."

The AEK hospital in Budapest is scheduled to hold a press conference this evening to update the media on Massa's injuries.

The spring struck Massa just above his left eye, smashing his helmet and fracturing his skull.

Doctors also confirmed on Monday that the operation that was conducted on Saturday afternoon saved Massa's life.

Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo visited Massa in hospital on Monday.

Yup. Even though the wheel failure may have been a fault on the wheel, from Brundle's commentary it's clear the problem was noticed early. At that point Renault should have told him to park his car, which while a difficult decision for any team, is still possible. CF Mercedes at Le Mans when their rear wing failed – they withdrew the sister car for safety reasons. We're just lucky we're not talking about a dead racing driver due to a tyre landing on his head.

Felipe Massa's condition is continuing to improve as doctors at the AEK Hospital in Hungary, where the Brazilian driver is being treated, denied earlier reports of eye damage and instead suggested he could make a full recovery.

Colonel Dr. Lajos Zsiros, the chief surgeon of the Hungarian Defence Forces, told a news conference on Monday that the 28-year-old had been woken from sedation on Monday afternoon, and was unlikely to be sedated again.

"In the last 24 hours some major changes have gone through in the condition of Felipe Massa," said Zsiros. "His condition continues to be stable.

"During the CT-scan we performed we could ascertain that there was an improvement in his condition. We stopped sedation and after that Felipe Massa became capable of making contact."

"So in the afternoon we stopped the artificial ventilation of Felipe. As we speak he is sleepy, but he gives adequate answers to the questions we ask him, and he can move his arms and legs spontaneously."

"Right now he has no fever, and we have removed the drain tube from his wound. Further improvement of his condition can be expected. During the night we do not plan to do any more interventions on him."

Zsiros denied the earlier reports that Massa had injured his left eye, which led to speculation about his future participation in Formula 1.

CF Mercedes at Le Mans when their rear wing failed – they withdrew the sister car for safety reasons. We're just lucky we're not talking about a dead racing driver due to a tyre landing on his head.

Wasn't that Mark Webber driving that car? Also, I thought it was because the aero was wrong at only that part of the crest on the track, where air would get under the car and toss it up. I don't think it was a part failure.
