Indeed he is, and he's reported to be looking for a move away from Schalke – but you'd have to pay top money to acquire his services. That's why he'll go elsewhere.

*sigh* i know. I also can't blame him. His defense might as well not have showed up. I wonder how Inter lost to them.

I hope no one wins the SPL and everybody makes friends.

Ah you've made the mistake of seeing I'm a Rangers supporter and mistook me as one of the "unhinged minority" (to quote you from another thread). What you don't know is the reason I hang out here is because a) I don't know much about football and b) I've not got a sectarian axe to grind so stay away from the typical Old Firm websites. In fact, I've probably been in more chapels than most Celtic fans.

So I can only assume you support one of the wee diddy teams. Come on, off the fence, who is it? There's a big cuddle waiting for you....:D

Neuer to Bayern is a done deal if all the media reports are correct. Hope they didn't get the transfer fee in writing yet, it surely went up after tonight.

I was wondering how much of that quarterfinal result was down to Schalke being a prolific attacking team and how much Inter looked utterly disorganized and clueless. Guess we have the answer. Vida, Rio, and VDS were hardly bothered at all.

Well, that spoiled my lunch. Ultimately it's a vain pursuit for both teams of course. United wins the right to be humiliated by the Spaniards in the final.

Have a sinking feeling United might pull it out of the bag on the night.. get passed to death by Barcelona, cling on all game and then nick it with a dodgy penalty. You heard it here first.

One doesn't even need to look at the Inter tie to guess that - Schalke are, what, 15th in the Bundesliga? On paper they had no business in this stage of the CL at all and any result other than a United win would be (or will be) a huge upset. Raul is still quality and their keeper is great, but this would be like Blackburn or Birmingham in the CL semifinals :)eek:), though the Bundesliga seems to have more parity than the Premier League so Schalke aren't quite as bad as all that.

A truly horrifying thought.

Very plausible. The current team can do 1-0 squeaky bum victories quite well and lets not forget the infamous United 'luck'.

They're 10th at the moment, but they've been excellent in the UCL so far: finished on top in Group B, then beat a solid Valencia team in the round of 16 before flattening the highly disorganized Inter. I think they're still alive in their domestic cup competition, as well. Schalke is definitely not Birmingham or Blackburn bad. Maybe if they can get Höwides back next week it'll help them out, but they're probably in too deep of a hole to come back at Old Trafford.

I hope Park has enough gas left in the tank for his usual star turn at the Emirates this weekend. ;)

If anyone's cabale of beating Barca it's probably Man U with the reasons above :)

Got to say (begrudgingly) I think I'd prefer Man U to win it

I know a bit about football but my knowledge pales into insignificance compared to some of you guys.;)

The Sons are having a decent year, promoted to Div 2 and sitting mid table.

Don't worry, I'm a Johnny-come-lately and an American to boot. ;)

As long as 'character' is defined as developing a beer gut, starting fights and chasing after unattractive women at bars and parties... :D

Park is the quintessential impact sub; I am convinced that Fergie keeps him in a cryo-chamber somewhere and only unpacks him (fresh as a daisy) when needed. But Fergie doesn't rate him as a starter...the poor man's Dirk Kuyt? :D Arsenal are a mental shambles at the moment, so I don't see how United could fail to beat them.

I'm confidently sticking to my guns: Barcelona are the best team in the world by a mile, they deserve it and they will win it. They are superior to United in every position and full of confidence. Pretty much their only worry is exhaustion - most of their squad have played a shocking amount of matches over the last couple years, and four El Classicos will have worn them down (the same would apply for Real if they somehow got past Barca).

Real are easily next in line in terms of quality and United are far behind. With all (grudging) due respect to United, they are only here because of Ferguson - he has turned a pretty average side into title winners and CL contenders - and because they, unlike Arsenal/Lyon/Spurs/Shaktar, never drew Barca or Real in the previous knockout stages. I know I'm biased against United, but Barca and Real are so hot this year I can't see Man U outplaying either side.

swiftaw - relegation - West Ham United if they persist with Carlton Cole; he was terrible against Chelsea. No idea re the others - injuries, luck, finding one game...

Silencio - 'United' - didn't see it, but the BBC's defence to the criticism is "...It's a drama not a documentary."

If Manchester United get to Wembley, success will depend on their legs not giving way; in 2009 they had been running on fumes for some time. Given the game last night, the score was disappointing - combination of good keeping and poor finishing, Hernandez.:)

On disappointments, Zamora is still on the bench.:( Edit - at least the mascara wearing North American has scored - good volley.:D

Cheers,
OW

Whis basically translates to: "we can make things up in order to make the story more dramatic".

Dempsey's had an excellent season for Fulham - about 10 goals this season and that's a good haul for a mdifielder (heck, that's a decent haul for a striker).

Can Mourinho ever finish a game against Barca with 11 men?

Edit: And the maestro nets his 51st goal of the season. Prolific.

Edit 2: ...make that 52nd

He's got two tonight:D Zamora came on - scored, but disallowed for handball - very poor decision re the booking.

Roll, roll, roll in ze hay - Barcelona must get through a lot of this sort of stuff:

There was a lot of diving and play acting but that's a given with Barca...particularly Busqets. So why fall for it.

Madrid did themselves no favors with their tackling/break up play tactic. Didn't try to go and win the game. Far too negative. Played with pretty much 10 men behind the ball.

Ref to be fair also effectively handed the game to Barca...again.

Only good thing about the match was the 15mins of Messi.

Reminded me of the Chelsea/Barca semis match a few years back (Mourinho also in charge). Only good thing was 1min of Iniesta.

UP THE SONS! Finally started playing with a bit of heart once Adamson took over.

I know they can, I just don't think they will

2nd. Good match tho... imho.

it is.

I think both teams were about equal in terms of being guilty of diving - and there was rather a lot of it, unfortunately. Way too much falling down and rolling on the ground after challenges, and I think Pedro and di Maria could have both seen yellow for dives.

I thought the ref had a pretty good game considering all the play-acting crap he had to put up with. As for the Pepe red card, I think it could have been a yellow, It was not deliberate in my opinion, but he had his studs up and that often gets one sent off.

In any other league Real Madrid would be dominating, but Barca are in a class of their own. In the end, Real never threatened enough, and though they had several chances Barca had more. Messi was world-class on that second goal.

Almost forgot, Adebayor should have been sent off for pimp-slapping Mascherano to the ground, and Busquets should have seen yellow for a play-acting, he is a disgrace.

the foul from Pepe was a red similar to last years Ribery foul: he simply was stepping in way too hard, risking an injury

IMHO Pepe is one of the players Real needs to replace, he might be a good ball collector but he makes so many dangerous and way to agressive fouls that he gets one red card after another ... and with that he weakens his team

the lack of Khedira in Reals midfield today was quite obvious today

I can only presume from last night's match that the "Respect the ref" campaign didn't actually make it to Spain ;)

Loved the half time hand bags and Messi's second goal was a joy to watch as he danced round the defenders. The most entertaining part was of course "The Special One's" post match comments :)

On that note, I was watching a Spanish match a few weeks ago - albeit with English commentators – and one of the players started having a right hissy fit at one of the officials over something or other. The commentators criticised his actions, adding gravely, 'Of course, they don't have the 'Respect' campaign in Spain as we do in England'.

Yep – that's why you never see any English players behaving like pillocks, Mr Commentator...
