I'm in two minds about that AC Milan shirt – it looks okay, but like his Lordship I prefer my stripes thicker and bold. A decent effort, I suppose – and at least it's not blighted with a plain back.

Anyway, I've bought my ticket for Aston Gate this Saturday to witness Hull City's final match of the season, away at Bristol City. I'll be embarking on an eight-hour round trip, covering in the region of 500 miles – and the coach sets off at 6am prompt. All this for an absolutely meaningless match, as neither team can be promoted or relegated this season.

This might be proof that I'm a bit mental.

...

P.S. Liverpool have now leapfrogged Spurs (having played a game more though). We've been much more consistent over the last month. While our improved form comes far too late to accomplish much this season (Europa League? Meh, I could take it or leave it), it at least points the way forward and Liverpool fans can expect an even better product next season. It's getting more crowded at the top though.

Not being in the Europa League shouldn't harm recruitment and should help re competing for a top spot in the Premier League.

Former Liverpool player news; Sami Hyypia is to retire at the end of the season - he wasn't too bad for someone from the other place.

Ah, the good old days.

It's the kick-off time that's mental. To avoid alcohol fuelled punch-ups?

Owen and Berbatov may get a start against FC Schalke 04 - important game time for the run in.

Cheers,

In other promotion news, Norwich confirmed theirs by defeating Portsmouth 1-0 yesterday, returning to the top flight for the first time since 2005. Get in, Canaries!

For once, no! :D

The matches were originally scheduled to be played at 3pm this Sunday. However, Sky want to show a Championship match or two and Sunday's frightfully exciting Premier League games. This meant that (at the request of Sky) the entire Championship programme has been moved forward a day to 12.45pm, as they're not allowed to show live football at 3pm on a Saturday. At the time the decision was made, Sky hadn't decided which games to televise as they couldn't be sure which matches might be key in the promotion/relegation tussle, so all games were shifted on the off chance – there's also the fact that Leagues generally prefer the final matches of the season to be played at the same time.

The problem is, not only does this mean that those who are travelling distances to watch their team now have to get up at daft o'clock (including yours truly), but the announcement was made the week after the cheap rail ticket sites made tickets for this weekend available to buy – meaning that a number of people had purchased train tickets that now were no good for getting to their chosen game on the correct day. Another example of how the interests of the TV companies are put ahead of those of the supporters...

Can't decide if I like the new AC Milan kit:

I like the wide stripes much more than the thin ones.

Somewhere in between would be my preference.

Oh dear, no contrasting shorts. Looks like a big banana.

Barca through.

Barca dive rather often. Still, it doesn't change the fact that they are better than Real.

Will Manchester United be able to finish the final with 11 men?

The Crew take the field in the yellow home shirt occasionally with black shorts, but not very often for some reason. I hate to say this, but back when we had a sponsor (as ugly as it was), it broke up the yellowness of the uniform somewhat.

Villareal's shirt is worse in the bananna department:

Why do I always hit "quote" rather than "edit" and end up posting twice in a row? eejit.

Anyway City are supposedly resigned to losing Tevez over the summer but are pricing him at £50 million. On the one hand the money sounds insane. But on the other, he's been more consistent than Torres (if considerably harder to man-manage). So on that basis he's worth at least as much as El Nino. But the money's still insane. I wonder if anybody would buy him at that price. Perhaps Real Madrid?

If Man City do get rid of him they will need a replacement though.

for 50 mil pounds ? that can only mean an EPL club, barca, or real ... the italians don't have that much money anymore and the german clubs don't want to pay it/don't have it it the first place

that said talking about how Manu will be playing in the final now is the best way of screwing it up today against schalke ;)

1-2 with 26 minutes to go would have been interesting; Barcelona like any other team have been seen to get nervous - sadly the referee played the fool and disallowed Higuain's goal.

As takao points out, if Manchester United get through. If they do, at least 4 things are needed:

1 Their legs don't give way,
2 Get tight enough to the Barcelona players without the ball,
3 Take their chances, and
4 A referee who doesn't fall for Barcelona's antics.

Number 4 doesn't look likely.

Cheers,

Now that it's been officially launched, just a reminder of how awful the Newcastle home jersey is:

Why couldn't they move the crest slightly so that it is entirely on the black part?

Also, they are offering a limited edition version to select fans that has a gold crest. To me it looks better than the actual version (if they moved it slightly to the left):

I like the Villa kit, it reminds me of shirts I wore when I played in the youth rec leagues, they had square patterns on them like that. :)

Looking at the replay, Pique makes contact with Ronaldo after he releases the ball, Ronaldo tumbles slightly theatrically and lands on Mascherano's ankle, who dives even more theatrically. Ronaldo could have kept his feet in my opinion, but he had already dinked the ball forward and was lookinig for a free kick; Mascherano would almost certainly have gotten to the ball if he had not been tripped/dived. I think Mascherano was really tripped (and then dived), whereas Ronaldo was trying to draw a foul. But Mascherano dived much more theatrically.

My armchair reffing decision is that Pique fouls Ronaldo, Ronaldo accidentally (but in fact) trips Mascherano, who then heavily embellishes it. The goal stands, Pique gets a ticking off, Mascherano should be booked for unsporting behavior, and possibly Ronaldo too, his extral rolling as he fell is what caused the contact with Mascherano.

Mind you, that's after watching the replay in slo-mo 10 times. The ref would never have had time to see that and make a decision. But he still blew up too early. At minimum the goal should stand.

changed in 6-7 positions ... playing with a B squad in a semifinal ... if that isn't asking for it

Yes, but it's Man U we're talking about here...there is simply no way they are going to let Schalke win 3-0 or 2-0. All they have to do is park the bus and maybe score one goal. Easy peasy.

Though I hope Schalke absolutely batter them, I know it isn't going to happen. An early red card against Man U might give Schalke hope, but even a man down all Man U has to do is defend their 2-0 lead...

EDIT: What does it mean for Berba if he fails to score here? Schalke are going to be going for it, he should have space in which to work, and he'll be getting the best service the B team can give him.

Game over, tie over. Man U can start packing their bags for their 2-0 loss to Barca in the final. I hope they print up plenty of victory flags for that one too. :D

Warning to road users in Inverness, a giant green bottle has just crashed.:D

Rangers now top of the league by a point, each have 3 games left.
Final game for all teams in Scotland is 15 May at 12.30. Not sure if that is for Sky or alcohol reasons. Probably alcohol.

Walk in the park would be an understatement. Has to be the most one-sided semi-final i've ever come across. I don't see how Utd will cope with Barca though, they are superior in midfield & attack and their defense is just about restored to full strength.

Then again there is the Wembley and 'this is football' factor...
