And that is the last kick of the ball in Scotland, bloody hell what are we going to do for the next 8 weeks?

from 26. june to 17. July there is the Women' Worldcup in germany ..sure not the same physical level, but from time to time when top teams are playing, it can be quite entertaining

To kick off a very exciting and nervous final day of the premier league season, a little trivia question: Who was the last englishman to win the premier league golden boot (do you know without looking it up?)

It was the boy Philips, wasn't it?

Another bit of final day trivia for you, courtesy of OptaJoe – Wigan Athletic are the only side who have played in the English top flight never to have been relegated out of it. Cause for optimism there. ;)

Yes, it was Philips.

I am hoping that Blackburn and Birmingham end up going down, but I think it's more likely to be Blackpool and Birmingham. (I have faith that Wigan can escape, although can they not leave it until the last minute like last week).

Um...wow. That was something. I really feel bad for Blackpool. No justice in football.

Manchester United happily play the part of villains and strike Blackpool down with a non-full strength team that will not be fined by the Premier League. My condolences OllyW! On the up side Blackpool didn't go crazy spending money on players, so I would think you can keep the team and manager together and make another push next year. Do you think Charlie Adam will stay?

Birmingham's post-Carling Cup slump ultimately did them in, though they can at least go down with some real silverware. Spurs are going to Europe - but I would think the season really ends on a disappointing note for them as they failed to qualify for the Champions League. The top four go into the off season knowing they have targets on their backs - Liverpool and Spurs will be looking to muscle in and none of the current top four are guaranteed as easy a ride next season.

That was the worst season I've ever experienced in my short time as a Liverpool supporter. Good riddance. I've already forgotten about it and I look forward to better things in August.

In the meantime, I've got MLS. :D Columbus lost a tight match 1-0 to Portland yesterday - Portland, despite it being their first season in MLS, have turned their stadium into a fortress and are unbeaten there, and their support is incredible! The Crew are doing reasonably well considering we are in a rebuilding process. The playoffs are not out of the question. Our biggest problems are up top; Designated Player Andres Mendoza is not producing goals, nor is experienced super sub Jeff Cunningham. Emilio Renteria is the only forward pulling his weight right now, and we can't rely on our defense to keep clean sheets all season. Manager Robert Warzycha continues to come in for criticism from fans for being too tactically inflexible, favoring a 4-5-1 formation over a more attacking 4-4-2 or 3-5-2 (the latter of which the Crew used occasionally under previous manager Sigi Schmidt).

Check out Portland's unusual goal celebration - mascot "Timber Joey" applies a huge (real) chainsaw to Portland's "Victory Log" every time they score a goal!

the english FA is behaving like a sore loser ? what's next ? the pope discovered to be catholic ?

No the FA (P.s. it's not English FA because we are the original, it's just FA) have done the right thing here, though they could have done more, but I don't see the point in voting for two corrupt leaders.

For the record, I am disappointed we didn't finish 5th, we could easily have done so and I always want to finish in the highest possible league position. But I am not disappointed to be missing out on the Europa League.

Furthermore, we should sell Joe Cole this summer. He has, sadly, been a flop. Konchesky will surely go as well, and I think we should keep our eye open for a third striker to replace David N'Gog.

I'm happy enough, Wolves managed to avoid the drop by the skin of their teeth. :D

 This is doubly embarrassing for me, because I went to the trouble of writing down which clubs people support (apart from the obvious ones like garybUK and XIII), so I have no excuse for that mix-up. Congrats on staying up. :)

On that note, congrats also to swiftaw on his Latics' survival!

The question isn't if he'll stay or not, but to which team he'll be moving...

Despite all the recent badge-kissing antics...

And on the subject of moves, Sky Sports News are reporting that Ancelotti has tonight left Chelsea.

Back to Italy I wonder?

Well guessed!

Rumour has it that Van Basten could be the next Chelski manager, although I'm hoping for the second coming of 'The Special One'

Sad to see Birmingham and Blackpool go down, but then someone has to go. I wonder if McLeish will stay on at Birmingham or be tempted elsewhere (should a position arise) due to the lack of back room support he seems to have at Birmingham

Bye Owen Hargreaves - very important re 2007/8 and missed in away games this season.:(

Glad Michael Owen scored, not enough game time.

Game totals = those at the end of the season, i.e. should be slightly different:

v Blackpool----------------v Chelsea

Van der Sar - 33----------33 Van der Sar
Evra - 34(1)---------------19 Ferdinand
Vidic - 35------------------35 Vidic
Rafael - 15(1)--------------5(6) Fabio Da Silva
Evans - 10(2)-------------18(2) O'Shea
Anderson - 14(4)---------19(6) Giggs
Park Ji-Sung - 13(2)------13(2) Park Ji-Sung
Nani - 30(2)---------------23(5) Carrick
Scholes - 16(6)-------------8(12) Valencia
Fletcher - 23(2)-----------25(3) Rooney
Berbatov - 24(8)----------15(12) Hernandez

(Smalling 46) - 11(5)-----10(2) (Evans 46)
(Owen 63) - 1(10)--------11(5) (Smalling 88)
(Rooney 84) - 25(3)

I was surprised Park and Vidic played, sadly the latter shouted run at me.

Charlie Adam got away with another bad tackle; that part of his game is like Scholes. To Liverpool or Spurs?

swiftaw and OllyW; how are your heart rates? Can Wolves score? They always score!:) Hope those running the Fantasy Football practice identifying N'Zogbia and Figueroa during the close.

SactoGuy18; in the last few years Manchester United have lost to - massacred - drawn with, and beaten Barcelona. If the hard-working United turn up, they can win.

Cheers,
OW

I was disappointed with the ending too. Spurs had plenty of chances to clinch fourth and blew it. I guess Europa League is something, but it's not much. Expectations are higher now and they have to stay in contention for a CL spot next season. Not an easy task now that Man City has the resources to contend.

I'm really pleased with how MLS has expanded lately. In the early days it was difficult to pinpoint where the excited fanbases would be (thus the failure of teams in San Jose, Tampa, and Miami), but now they're letting demand build naturally for new teams. Toronto and Seattle have been great additions. I was initially concerned about Chivas USA splitting the LA fanbase, but it seems to be working out fine, and it's fun to have a local rivalry. I'd like to see them attract better international players and MUCH better referees, but overall the progress is encouraging.

In the end, Manchester United played a nearly full stength team, thought not quite full-strength. I was being sarcastic. ;) It's a stupid rule, as I've said before - especially because, as it is currently interpreted, it unfairly singles out smaller clubs.

I wonder if Michael Owen is content to play such a small role at United going forward, or if he would prefer to move to a smaller team that will start him. But it does illustrate the value of being a big club - your fourth-choice striker can be kept content with a tidy salary and occasional cameos when needed. Smaller clubs can't afford to do that (and Liverpool don't even have a third/fourth striker worth mentioning).

Beaten to it by Fizzoid! He's definitely a perfect replacement for Scholes: no pace, brutal tackler. He's no ginger prince, but the hair can be dyed. :D;)

Things are definitely looking up for MLS. Toronto, Portland, Vancouver and Seattle all have really good fan support. Frankly that scares me a bit as a Columbus supporter. We are one of the original franchises, and have the first soccer-specific stadium in the US. I'm afraid that as the league grows, we will be seen as too small of a market and lose our franchise. I doubt it will happen, but it could under the right combination of circumstances. :(

Overall, though, you're right about MLS growing nicely. Right now it's the league with the most growth potential in US sport by a longshot, and I think more money is coming in as investors and sponsors see bigger crowds turning out. I really think the game is finally here to stay in the US as a top-level professional sport. I also really believe that it will someday be a real international-quality league, perhaps at the level of the Dutch or even French league. The US has the potential to turn out many more international-quality players than currently, and to attract more talent from Central and South America.

They do need to sort the reffing situation out though. It's shocking how many cards are issued in this league - and all too often the ref loses control of a match, resulting in some terrible decisions as the officials try to balance bad calls. Some of them (Baldomero Toledo comes immediately to mind) are total clowns IMO.
