If it proves popular and the FA realises that it's an opportunity to sell out Wembley a couple of times a year, I suspect that their attitude might change a bit. ;)

I expect they are saying it's a one-off so that if it's not commercially viable (or if the Scots take the place apart again) they can easily get out of it. If it proves to be popular then they can be the good guys and change their mind and say they were open to listen to popular opinion.

I doubt you're wrong.

In any case, they probably make goalposts out of kevlar or bits of space shuttle now...

In today's Carling Cup Semifinal tie at West Ham, Ben Foster put in his bid for a spot in the English national team by committing a highlight reel howler. Well done, lad!

So England don't really have a keeper outside of Hart then and maybe thats why United let him go.

As for Arsenal, at least they've won some sort of accolade...ish from UEFA. Explains why Wenger has implicit tenure.

USA and AC Milan defender Oguchi Onyewu has gone out on loan to Dutch side Twente for the remainder of the season.

This has been a horrible couple seasons for Gooch. He picked up a bad injury in a World Cup qualifier in 2009 that left him only half-fit for the World Cup and pretty much marginalized him at Milan. Perhaps going to Milan was a bridge too far, though I think he would have established himself with them at least as a regular sub had he been fit and healthy.

I hope he gets plenty of playing time at Twente.

Liverpool are apparently preparing a 10 million pound bid for a 17 year-old attacking midfielder from Southampton...so it looks like Damien is going to spend some money in January after all.

I hope the loan at Twente will give Gooch some much needed first team playing time. Even if he didn't get hurt, I don't think he would have featured at all at Milan.

He probably never would have gotten a regular starting spot, but I think he is good enough to have played in the less important CL matches and come on as a regular sub. But, as you say, maybe it was just a bit too far for him. The Eredivisie is well within his capabilities though.

Bendtner and Denilson on field and only Chamakh and Song on bench...im slightly nervy but at least Walcott, Fabregas, Wilshere are on the pitch.

Edit 1: Wth are these lot playing!

Edit 2: Very good. Full credit to Ipswich. Arsenal deserved nothing from this game.

And Blackpool does the double over Liverpool for the first time since the 1940s. They played some excellent football tonight. Charlie Adam is going to get some tempting offers this summer.

Some stupid BBC pundit said:
Don't tell me this isn't a shock - it's Blackpool beating Liverpool in the league. For the second time this season. This is more than a fairytale. It's a footballing miracle.

Really? A shock? A miracle? Really?

On the contrary, Liverpool are playing so badly at the moment that they are capable of losing to any team. I think that's quite obvious. Anyone who suggests that a Liverpool loss these days is "shocking" hasn't been watching football for the last 4 months. Fair play to Blackpool, they continue to play well and deserve the plaudits. But, frankly, beating Liverpool is no feat these days.

Bah.

EDIT: Now, a full-strength Arsenal losing to Ipswich, that's closer to the "shock" category.

At least Torres got on the scoresheet, and quickly too, so #1 objective on Kenny's to-do checklist ticked. And still early enough to still blame Hodgson for the defending and overall result too. Game 3 now will be all Kenny's though I think - the derby. He resigned last time after the 4-4 draw with them. I predict another draw before Kenny actually records his first win - the same scenario as the Blackpool one, an away win at Wolves after losing to them at home.

Truth be told Backpool are a decent team on a good day, so it was the first match at Anfield which Liverpool really should have won in their current circumstances. The Arsenal may have beaten them 6-0 early on at Ashburton Grove, but the way both are playing right now I'm not expecting the Gunners to walk away with the points at Blackpool so easily next time either.

Yep, speculation even before the match Liverpool were interested. Maybe now in January instead of waiting.

What was that, get Torres to score once? Setting the bar high! :D I kid.

At the moment Liverpool are poor in both defense and attack. In my opinion, Kenny's first task is to make Liverpool tougher to beat. If you look at our losses this season, it's not that we are conceding huge numbers of goals, but we just can't keep clean sheets against mid and lower table sides. I feel like defensive frailty is our number one problem. We do have lack of depth in attacking players, but we need to be able to win matches 1-0 or 2-0. Right now we just can't do that.

Kudos for posting that - very cool graphic.

Some fire certainly went into in that goal, which bodes well. See if he can build on it.

It is, isn't it? I love stuff like this. The only two who are solid seem to be Fullham and Orient. Arsenal seems to be the only one with scattered enclaves? Chelsea fans seem to be the most widespread, but the least 'solid' percentage wise (apart from Barnet 100% non-solid), like the supporters of the smaller clubs have been jumping on the bandwagon.

Whereabouts on this map is that new Olympic stadium, is it in a Spurs or Hammers zone?

It would be interesting to see similar maps for other cities with multiple clubs. Though few can approach London for diversity.

That map is quite fantastic.

<Insert obvious and unfunny 'It doesn't show Manchester United's core areas of support' comment>

As you say your Lordship, it would be interesting to see other UK maps, but it would probably have to be for wider areas rather than a city – say the Greater Manchester area or West Midlands. I wonder how a Yorkshire map would look?
