So is Grant just not a good manager? two clubs he's managed now face(d) relegation. Was he only successful at Chelsea thanks to quality of players, Wilkins & Terry?

I quite rate Grant, the nonsense at Portsmouth would be enough to rattle any club and to take the team on such a spectacular cup run was pretty impressive.

Actually, even with the mahoosive points deduction they were fighting it might still have been possible for them to have stayed up if they'd have realised it in the last couple of months (and had a full, uninjured squad). I don't think that Grant can be blamed for their drop- but what do I know, I thought Zola was alright (the owners' trash talk was pretty appalling to see, let alone put up with at work- they seem to have learn't their lessons from this though)

in the news of managers under fire, apparently The Billionaire has backed Carlo "The Brow" Ancelotti...but Lampard isn't helping things with his Scolari comment.

 Saw this too- what on earth was Lamps thinking? Apparently he's one of the more intellectual players, and yet thought this was appropriate. Did you see the dejected photo he posed for? (in the away strip) What was he trying to accomplish and where were Chelsea's PR, shocker!

Some sad news — Bolton legend and famous football chap of days yore Nat Lofthouse has passed away at the age of 84.

When we played Bolton a couple of years ago he came to the KC as a special guest and got a rousing applause from all corners of the ground. As I say, sad news. :(

United can't be beaten, even when down a man against one of the more powerful attacking teams in the league. Will they simply coast into the title in second gear due to their defense?

A 2-2 draw with a weakened Everton is a good result for Liverpool given their current form. A point is a point. Shame Howard gave up a penalty, I hate to see him make a mistake. So does my fantasy points total.

I'm still not giving up hope that they'll eventually bottle it. They just need one of the two defenders to miss a game. Also Spurs were scared of going for it when they were reduced to 10 men.

Hmm...

Everton has accepted an offer on Pienaar from Chelsea, and turned down a lower offer from Tottenham (though indicated they'll accept a new offer from Tottenham, if they match whatever Chelsea offered).

Not 100% sure Everton can afford to weaken its squad at the moment, so - unless Moyes has a (better) replacement on hand - I'm not sure I like this...

He's out of contract at the end of the season though, so if he wants to move he could potentially refuse a new contract and leave on a free in the summer. By selling now, Everton will at least get some cash for him that can perhaps go towards a replacement.

IIRC, Pienaar wouldn't sign a contract extension, so his leaving was going to happen sooner rather than later.

I know all that, but getting a nominal fee now might be very, very expensive if the result is a relegation at the end of the season...and at the moment that is a very real concern, a few losses (instead of draws) and we're suddenly in deep, deep trouble...

But, as I said, if Moyes has a (good enough) replacement up his sleeve, then we might as well get something... ;)

I don't think you have much choice, unfortunately. If he's worth money, and he wants to go, keeping him till the end of the season might so more harm than good. If his head is turned, he might lose his concentration and play badly, and then at the end of the season he'll go for free anyhow.

I take your point that Everton's squad is thin though. You can't afford to lose players right now. Still, with a chunk of money from the sale you may be able to replace him quickly.

Kenny's record at Anfield so far = undefeated. :p

Next stop (hopefully): an actual win! :D

EDIT:
Finally got to watch the match. I thought Liverpool played reasonably well, but we are still always shaky in defense and one wonders if we would have been able to get a result if Everton had a full strength squad.

The penalty decision was a tough call for Howard; from the replay it looks like he attacks the ball and Maxi comes in from behind. I'm not sure Howard saw Maxi before he committed to the ball, but it was still a clear penalty.

Yeah, I'm somewhat surprised considering what Sunderland has done for his career. Although, as it says in the article, Gyan and Welbeck have certainly been putting them away this season. But Villa?

One can only assume that Villa are offering Bent generous wages. His goal scoring record is quite good. Better than, say, Alberto Aquilani's was.

Speaking of Liverpool flops, Konchesky is getting more abuse in the press today but it's worth mentioning that Liverpool's crap defense is currently 1/4 Konchesky (when he plays) and 3/4 Benitz players.

Oh dear, Vermaelen is to have surgery and be out for another 6 weeks. What will you do now Wenger.

Meanwhile over in Qatar, an Asian Cup update:

Australia 1:1 South Korea.

The winner of this group looks likely to play Iran, while the runner up will face Iraq barring any upsets. Australia's on top going into the final matches. but considering India has conceded 9 goals in two games, Korea should walk it in against them and top the group on goal difference. Australia has a good track record against Bahrain but the scores have always been close, 1:0 or 2:1, and a loss would be a shock and send Australia crashing out. Anything can happen!

Qatar will be hosting the World Cup as we now know, so this is a sort of practice run. I don't think infrastructure will be an issue, but look at all the empty seats at the Japan v Arabia match in the video here:

http://www.the-afc.com/en/tournaments/men-a-youth/afc-asian-cup

It's going to be a totally different kind of atmosphere at their WC than at South Africa's for instance. For such a small country, the question is whether there's enough of a local population to fill the stadiums like they did in Korea/Japan or South Africa otherwise you're going to get matches like North Korea v New Zealand playing in a virtually empty arena. And then there's also how much does the culture of the host country/region affect the spectators willing to attend, specifically in regards alcohol and women? Qatar's good for tourism, but there's not exactly a pub on every corner for all the England and Aussie fans.

then it won't be much different than south africa where there were plenty of games with half filled stadiums during the group phase ;)

and if there is no beer ... then there will be riots plundering the streets of quatar i suppose

Poor India, even Harry Kewell scored against them! :D

Iran and Iraq both have decent teams who could go far in the competition. At first glance I would have tipped Australia and Japan for the final, but the first two have a decent shot and Uzbekistan are dark horses for an upset.

I hate to sound like a curmudgeon, and I have nothing against the Qataris themselves, but I hope the 2022 WC is played in mostly empty stadiums. Pretty much everyone questions the process that resulted in Qatar being chosen as host country, an now FIFA is proposing all sorts of nonsense about switching it to winter and adding extra co-hosts. I hope they overreach themselves and end up with egg on their face.

but there's not exactly a pub on every corner for all the England and Aussie fans.

That may be a good thing for the rest of us. ;)

It turns out that everything is alright from an Avram Grant point of view.

The good news is that the West Ham board have given their manager their complete backing, after the other managers they apparently wanted to replace him with – including Martin O'Neill – apparently decided that they wouldn't touch the job, not even with Phil Brown's tatty old hat.

What a bloody shambles. Heh. :D

So backing is just corporate speak for 'we couldn't find someone to replace you so you'll do for the time being'. If i was Grant i'd hand in my letter of resignation.

It's all Gollivan's fault, of course. I would never trust a guy who dresses like a Bond villain.

Still, Avram Grant is rapidly forming a reputation as a form of assisted suicide for struggling clubs in the Prem. For a modest fee, he will nobly preside over the death of your club's Premiership tenure, softening the blow with a cup final appearance and lots of feel-good speeches about team spirit and the like.

Here's a website I found which I thought Jaffa would appreciate:

The pitfall of leaving a manager in the job too long and making the situation even worse so it just ends up being a hospital pass for the next guy.

He'll probably do alright now there's no more speculation. You could throw a blanket over the whole bottom half of the table so he really only needs to win a couple of matches to change their situation completely. Ironically, surviving relegation will probably cost him his job at the end of the season, totally different situation for people lining up to take over a prem league club from the start of the season.
