Fret not, the club have put a post-Transfer Deadline statement out saying that although we put in a bid for Evans it was rejected by United. It also confirmed that we paid £300,000 for Stewart's signature, so my contact was right on that front. ;)

That'll keep Wayne in kibble for a couple of weeks.

Spurs leaving it to the last minute:rolleyes:

Cheers,

I just don't rate Squillaci and think he needs to be replaced. We have lost seven out of eight games in which Squillaci and Koscielny have been our centre backs. We don't even even have to spend a lot just get a decent defender in.

Even when Vermaelen makes it back he might need time to find his feet again. Squillaci is a liability as i've mentioned and Djourou/Kos can't play every single game.

I don't think Squillaci is good enough either, but I do accept January is a terrible time to go and replace him. Also, Arsene brought him in in the summer.. he's never going to give up on a player that quickly, he's too stubborn. All in all, I'm pretty glad we weren't involved in that shambles of a transfer window.

That's because 'Arry's a wheeler dealer.

'Arry's not a wheeler dealer.

Haha I posted that last night too!

Well, it would seem Carroll didn't want to leave That is, unless Newcastle didn't offer him £££ with an improved contract, bearing in mind he only signed a 5 year deal back in October. I think someone's scared of a backlash!

Oscillatewildly, do you rate Corry Evans? I don't watch the United reserves too closely, but I do like what I've seen of him so far - he at least offers some versatility at the back and in midfield. I'm just not sure what his potential is to make it in the first team.

I liked what I saw of Cameron Stewart, but he did have a lot of competition in the reserves and academy that will probably end up being better than him.

The United youth player whose long term prospects I'm most excited about is Paul Pogba. Reminds me of a Patrick Vieira with a sharper eye for goal.

Indeed, it's always going to be tough for lads like Stewart to break through at a club like United where you have to be something a bit special. He's done well for us to date though. Signing a young player like him can be a bit of a gamble of course, but hopefully he can build on his performances so far.

Anyway, I'm in the pub having a pre-match pint before tonight's encounter with Leeds United. It's our cup final against the Champions of Europe, so it's all very exciting. :)

In MLS news, Columbus have finally signed striker Jeff Cunningham, more than a month after we selected him in the re-entry draft. This will be his second stint at the club, where he is tied with ex-Fulham captain Brian McBride as the Crew's top scorer. The thing that annoys me is that immediately after we selected him in the draft, the 34 year-old buggered off to Europe for a couple trials. It was only after he failed to get a gig there that he came back here and signed for us (probably due to his age).

Still, he is a proven striker in MLS and I expect him to get things done for us up front. We have younger forwards to do the legwork, Cunningham's job will be to use his good positioning sense to be where he needs to be at the right moment and poke home.

I've already seen pictures of idiots burning Torres shirts. I imagine some geordies are doing the same with Carroll shirts. I learned my lesson years ago - don't buy shirts with names on them. :D

Shearer's a bit miffed that Newcastle might miss out on a Europa spot now without Carroll. Probably a long shot anyway. But what if they kept Carroll and did get 7th spot which puts them into the Europa 3rd qualifying round?

1st qualifying round: €90,000
2nd qualifying round: €90,000
3rd qualifying round: €90,000
Playoffs: €90,000
Group stage: €100,000
Group match victory: €120,000
Group match draw: €60,000
1st knock out round: €180,000
2nd knock out round: €270,000
Quarter-finals: €360,000
Semi-finals: €630,000
Final: €2,000,000
Winning the final: €1,000,000

That £35,000,000 is looking pretty good, isn't it? Basically they just won the Europa League 8 times in less than an hour yesterday for that amount of dosh. Minus the silverware of course, but just talking business-wise. Aim for 7th spot now but no harm done if they miss out and finish mid-table. Their original target was just to avoid relegation anyway. Then buy over the break with all that money when players are cheaper.

Maybe Gray and Keyes can make some snide comment about male linesmen not knowing the offside rule...

C'mon Suuuuuuunderland. ;)

Oh dear oh dear linesman. Someone needs to explain the offside rule to him. If we lose today its all but over.

Edit: Phew. Move over Chamakh, Koscielny has entered the building. Does this mean we have another goalscoring defender in Kos.

Edit 2: Watching the West Brom match and noticing that Al Habsi is actually quite a brilliant keeper...saved his team from losing the match.

Big match with Leeds Jaffa, and you've got a point out of it after a Leeds fightback. Good result or two dropped points? I hope Guzan didn't have any howlers.

Men don't know the offside rule. A female linesman wouldn't have allowed Saha's goal. :D

United played some good stuff tonight. Van Der Sar gets an assist, Rooney bags a brace, and Vidic scores without using his head.

hey guys, is it still soccer season or is it off season now?
No, there's ages yet. We don't finish until May. :)

Well, drawing after a lead is never good but we'll take that. We were by far the better team in the first half, but Leeds came back into it in the second. We spent the last five-ten minutes with ten men after Liam Rosenior was stretchered off to hospital after a naughty white-clad arm clattered him in the chops.

Mind, in the past three games we've played three of the better teams in the division – and we've picked up three draws, we've not lost to any of them. that's a sign of progress, I reckon.

Anelka gave a blistering performance today, was involved in everything. Scared of being benched for the spaniard on sunday was he.

Arsenal have lost another player (Song) to injury. Two massive players are now sidelined. We have to rely on Denilson and Diaby now.

Well now that the dust has settled...

Kyle Bartley [Arsenal - Rangers] Loan
El-Hadji Diouf [Blackburn - Rangers] Loan
David Healy [Sunderland - Rangers] Loan

That's 3 more than I expected! I don't know much about Bartley, lets hope we can knock him into a man (we're taking full credit for Giovanni van Bronckhorst)

His positioning and passing look good from what I've seen - which isn't as much as my niece, and she prefers him to Jonny (who needs to toughen up). Making the first team is an opportunity not a guarantee of a job for life , but I think he will get his chance to do more than warm the bench - League Cup next year; da Silva - Evans - Evans - da Silva :)

A lot of talk about Pogba, but I'm hoping Ryan Tunnicliffe turns out to be Roy Keane Plus.

Nani - back to too many shots.

Jaffa Cake - good to see a stunning goal by Jimmy Bullard.

Cheers,

Yep, it's always the way isn't it. :D Perhaps he can find the motivation to put in a bit of effort in Suffolk, who knows?

Anyway - here as a treat for your niece is a picture of her idol doing something heroic. :)

Gary Neville has retired from football in order to concentrate on his facial hair growing endeavors.

I imagine Manchester United will find a role for him, perhaps teaching youth team players how to perform blatant fouls without getting sent off. :D

Was he really the best right back in England? He always seemed like a professional fouler to me.

On another note, Suarez starts on the bench tonight. I wonder what the chances are of him getting on the pitch.

To be fair, I never watched him play at the start if his career, but his legs have been gone for years now. He fouls people a lot.

Well, he's fit, but I'm not sure if he's practiced with the squad yet. It's a bit of an ask, but if he makes the bench he's sure to make a late cameo to try and show David N'Gog how it's done.

Mrs Cake reckons that, if she had to choose between the pair of them, she'd go for Gary over Phil.

I might need to have a word with her.

Oh my word, she must have been confused. Make sure she knows that Gary is the one with the dodgy 'tache. ;)

To ease your pain at this sad time, here as a treat for you is a picture of your idol doing something heroic.:)*

* wording pinched from Jaffa Cake - cheers for the photo of Corry, it'll complete the set.
