It's odd, really - you've gotten a lot of points from teams few would ahve expectd to get a result from, but dropped a lot of points against "easier" opposition. Maybe a motivation problem? Or perhaps Mick's tactics work better against teams that try to play the ball on the ground?
It was a longstanding problem of ours too, although Pearson (Nigel) looks to have addressed it a bit this season.

I think sometimes against 'bigger' teams the pressure's off to a degree – you're expected to be defeated so there's a 'we've nothing to lose' mentality that can translate into a good performance. Conversely, playing teams who are down at the bottom with you often creates more pressure to get a result.

On that note, did I mention that we thumped Scunny yesterday? Heh. :D

First things first, at 4-0 up, no amount of poor refereeing should change the outcome of the game, so we are masters of our own downfall. Diaby was stupid in reacting, and we defended like headless chickens at times.. but it's worth mentioning the refereeing yesterday if you didn't see it. It has been summed up a lot more astutely than I can by Arseblog here... this is what he says about it:

Phil Dowd

He had a shocker, in my opinion. I think Arsenal were being told, via his decisions, that referees will stand up for each other. Impugn one, you impugn us all, and I suspect that was a factor in some of his decision making. For example, look at this Barton tackle on Arshavin in the first half. That’s at least a yellow card yet he played on. I can’t understand that at all. Straight through the back of the player and we didn’t even get a free kick.

The first penalty was generous but they’re the kind you get at home when you’re 4-0 down. The second penalty, however, is still baffling. I’ve watched it over and over again and I can’t see a penalty. If that’s worthy of a penalty kick then you would have 28 penalties a game. It’s a scandalous decision and I think Dowd got that badly wrong, caught up in the fervour of the Newcastle comeback.

If there was free kick to be given in the second half, he gave it. The one that led to Newcastle’s fourth was typical. Barton played for it, Dowd reacted to the screams from the crowd and we know what happened when Arsenal headed clear. But if that’s a free kick how on earth can he not give the one on Arshavin? Or the time when van Persie was flattened just outside their area and he waved play on.

Also, if he’s going to send off Diaby, rightly so, for grabbing Barton around the neck, why doesn’t the same thing apply to Kevin Nolan who did almost the same thing to Wojscez. After the the first penalty our keeper kept hold of the ball, it was our kick-off after all, Nolan grabbed him a headlock and threw him to the ground. The only difference between that and Diaby is that Diaby retaliated. That Wojscez was booked made it all the more farcical.

However, Dowd wasn’t a problem in the first half when we played Newcastle off the park and went 4-0 up. He certainly played a part – and that second penalty would make you question him in a very serious way – but ultimately we were the masters of our own downfall.

I'd add about the Diaby red card... when you look at it in slow motion you can see why Diaby is annoyed. Yes, Barton wins the ball, but in doing so he left the ground, was not in control, and was reckless. Look at the way Diaby's leg bends in the video. Definite yellow, at least.

Refereeing wise, to conclude - even those Barton tackles I've highlighted here are worthy of two yellows, and there were more; how Nolan didn't get sent off for putting his arms round our keeper's neck I will never know; and the second penalty decision is one of the most farcical I've ever seen. When you add the that the stream of freekicks in the second half which he gave the way of the crowd, you have to say it is a truly awful performance. Again, I should stress, we should've won this game easily despite that, but still... unbelievable at this level.

A lot of chatter on 606 suggests Dowd was retaliating against Fabregas's alleged comments in the tunnel at the Everton match and had it in for us. Even though it was a stupid comment, the fact remains; Saha's goal was miles offside and they got it wrong. End of story. If anything they've just added more validity to the criticisms with that shocking performance at St. James's Park.

But as you say, ultimately we were the architects of our own downfall. You just can't concede 4 goals, 1 or 2 yes, 4...that is not championship form.

A nutty weekend gets nuttier:

Looking for a boost in the West Ham United and Wolverhampton Wanderers games?

Ah, OllyW's lot - well played. One team looked like champions, the other like relegation fodder; the midfield couldn't cope and moved farther apart, long ball, slow, Nani the greedy SOB, why cross the ball from behind the defence when you can dolly it up in front of them?, unforced errors, can't be arsed with 50:50s ... Perhaps if they had been 4-0 up, not just the one?

Ferdinand - use Smalling or Wes Brown.

Chelsea - don't think they will pretend the pitch is frozen this time.

Cheers,

That was quite a rout. :D

I've got to say, Torres looks bloody weird in that shirt...

Tell me about it.

Fairly quiet game so far. Chelsea is playing three strikers, we are playing half of one. Kuyt is great as a winger but pretty dreadful as a striker.Torres denied by a stout block from Carragher, and it's being made pretty obvious that Bosingwa > Johnson

Still, Maxi missed the sitter of the season...I could have put that away.

What did i say your Lordship? have some faith!

...and now you've gone and won it. Very pragmatic performance from Liverpool, defended resolutely and nicked a goal (granted Cech and Ivanovich were on different wavelengths today). Three world class strikers not enough...especially when the two main ones aren't really up for it.

That went well. :)

It was a textbook away strategy that paid off, though there were a couple edgy moments. Gerrard and Johnson both had a bit of an off day, and Kuyt was very quiet up front, despite his usual superhuman work rate.

Johnson could have been penalized for colliding with Ivanovich in the box, but it would have been a softish penalty IMO. Chelsea had three strikers on the pitch and didn't produce that much in the way of chances. Ultimately, Liverpool's defense did the job. Hodgson signing Raul Miereles is proving to be a decent player though. Speaks good English too.

Credit to Dalglish - I was skeptical over the appointment, and I still feel like it was a big gamble, but Kenny has proven he still knows how to manage. It helps that the fans were always behind him, of course, but he certainly knows what he's doing.

I did think we'd see Suarez for at least a short cameo, but he's not yet fit and perhaps Dalglish didn't want to change the shape of the side while things were going well.

Both Liverpool and Chelsea are playing better at the moment. Even setting the Torres factor aside for the moment, Chelsea's attack is strong and our defense is weak. It will be a tough game.

It's time to put the fallacy of Liverpool's defence being weak to rest. That was excuses for Hodgson. Under Kenny with exactly the same players, it's four wins on the trot and four clean sheets for the strongest defence in the league. He knew he didn't have to sign any new defenders.

I think it's time for you to start feeling confident about Kenny being the best thing since sliced bread for Liverpool. He's an excellent strategist and tactician as he showed today as well as a good motivator. He beat Chelsea without Torres. With Torres playing on the other team even. Or even needing to play Suarez or Carroll.

Meireles is another good example of how Kenny can change things. Hodgson (or Comolli) may have signed him, but he didn't know how to play him to his full potential. Seriously, this guy is going to be the best attacking midfielder soon. Four goals in five matches now where not a single one under Hodgson.

I put the notion out there right now that Liverpool will win the title next season.

We certainly have put a good run together, no doubt about it. But don't forget, the exact same players were crap under Benitez and Hodgson over the last year. Dalglish has shown himself to be a better man-manager than either Benitez or Hodgson so far, so perhaps he can get the best out of them. The defensive performance today was excellent - if we'd defended like that all season we'd be back in the top four.

The gamble with Dalglish is paying off so far. Also, we knew that part of Liverpool's poor form is artificial - we only narrowly missed winning the title two seasons ago with many of the same players. At the moment it's too early to know, but I'm a lot more confident that I was a few weeks ago. We are definitely heading in the right direction and we'll be starting next season with big goals in mind.

Turned out nice again.

...

I saw them ask the American footballers to pick between Chelsea and Liverpool, did they ask Terry who he thinks will win the Super Bowl?

I disagree with you on one key point. It was never a gamble. Dalglish is one of the best managers in the history of football. It's like saying hiring Alex Ferguson is a gamble.

The magic's back and his name is King Kenny. :)

See if he can keep it up. They should beat Stoke next week to keep their climb going after losing to them under Hodgson. But the big test will be the visit to Stamford Bridge next weekend. A win there and you should re-ignite the fire of hope for a CL spot considering this is a low points season compared to previous ones.

I'm quoting myself again because I'm going to repeat this as a firm prediction now instead - Liverpool will get the fourth CL spot this season. Albeit having played one game more, Liverpool are now only six points behind Spurs and Chelsea. What a change in prospects from a few weeks ago!

EDIT - I just realised the implications of this prediction = Chelsea missing out on a CL spot... and so Torres too, haha, love it. :D

And further down the table, Liverpool's best possible result if they win *every* game from now on is 74. A CL spot is beyond reach, so Dalglish's only realistic target is to overhaul Sunderland's 8 point lead on them, which is obtainable as they have a game in hand over the Black Cats.

And this one too from Jan 24. Kenny has already achieved this in a mere two weeks. Astonishing turnaround. So move that end of season target up to 4th spot now. Ha ha, I almost feel sorry for Spurs.. nah, no I don't. :D

The weekend results have overall favored Arsenal & City...mostly the former given that the latter has played one game more.

Given how you rate your ability to predict which players are going to do well and all that, I expect to see you signed up to next season's MacRumors Fantasy League to put your skills into practice. ;)

Terry knows a fine tight end when he sees one, but I think I can't say any more than that due to his latest injunction...

Well, Fergie was thought to be a gamble at the time, wasn't he?

You keep being the optimist, I salute you. I come from a city that hasn't won a title in nearly forty years, and doesn't look likely to to do so in the next forty. I'm used to disappointment and defeat, and while I hope to see Liverpool win big silverware, I won't my chickens till they hatch.

Kenny Dalglish is really silencing the doubters at the moment though, and I couldn't be happier (or more silenced).

Terry knows a fine tight end when he sees one, but I think I can't say any more than that due to his latest injunction...

Allegedly.
:D

Only if you want to see me end last, I'm atrocious at Fantasy Football.

Well, Fergie was thought to be a gamble at the time, wasn't he?

I dunno. He's always been pretty good. Arsenal offered him the job in the mid 80s when he was the only manager to break the Rangers/Celtic strangehold in the last 50 years with Aberdeen - three times. He ended up going to Man Utd in 1986 instead. How different things could have been - Cantona at Highbury? ;)

Here's a bit of an omen of statto trivia, Ferguson's first three league results at Man Utd were a loss, a draw and then a win. Sound familiar? Took him a couple of years though to build United into a professional outfit while Dalglish has inherited one so it shouldn't take him as long.

Standard Old Firm today in the cup. 4 goals (2 each), 2 red cards (1 each), 8 yellow cards. I thought the sendings off were harsh, Naismith put the ball out of the way and let the Celtic keeper foul him. Pretty sure he wasn't the last man. I think the ref tried to even things up later by sending Naismith off for a 2nd yellow for diving when there was definite contact (although again he was looking for the foul.) OK maybe not a penalty but if there is contact surely it can't be a dive?

Pretty disappointed though that Rangers couldn't press home a one goal lead at home with an extra man for the best part of it. El-Hadji Diouf was on the pitch but kept himself out of trouble. It's interesting to note that the ones most 'up' for Old Firm games are normally the 'foreigners' (apologies for xenophobia). I wonder if they thing they've got something to prove or feel they need to fit in with their team mates born into the West of Scotland disease.

Also of interest was Sir Alex Ferguson sitting in the stand next to Walter Smith and Ian Durrant. Ally McCoist seems to run the dug-out these days, in case there was any doubt who will take over from Smith. I was wondering is Sir Alex was scouting for Alan MacGregor, who had a super match.

In addition to losing another holding midfielder, Djourou is now injured too
My fault, sorry. I added him to my Fantasy Football team on Friday

How different things could have been - Cantona at Highbury? ;)
Or if Wednesday had actually kept him

Can you tell me this week lottery numbers please, I'm somewhat spooked after your Man U v Wolves prediction :)

Well, great result for Megson. We didn't loose against 9 man MK Dons. Can't wait

The big game yesterday was very enjoyable; interest 'til the end, indiscipline punished, and a big error - thought I could make a cup of coffee between the end of the 3rd quarter and beginning of 4th, missed the first play of the last quarter and was confused when I saw Green Bay in possession*. One thing disappointed me, the half-time show; no Bruce Forsyth.

* Be careful - drinking something other than beer during the Super Bowl is a crime in less tolerant countries.

Cheers,
OW
