2010 MacBook Pros i5/i7 Having Freeze issues

I just had yet another hard crash with gray screen asking to shutdown the computer. :( No kernel panic messages in the console log this time. I had two kernel panics a couple weeks ago with the same message asking to shutdown the computer.

Since then I replaced the stock Seagate 500GB/5400rpm drive with Hitachi 7K500, and upgraded to 10.6.4. Also, I installed Flash player 10.1 today.

Apple, please do something!

Well, I think I got my first freeze. Been using it for a good week and a half with no problems. But just now, I was just playing HL2, and quit. It was the first time I'd played it on this machine, and it's probably safe to say it's the hardest I've pushed it since owning it. I then open up iTunes and try to browse to some music, and everything just became completely unresponsive. Everything was still going on like nothing was wrong, like I could see people signing on and off Adium, time still changed, and could see iStat activity. But mouse, keyboard, trackpad, all did nothing. I didn't even have the spinning beach ball. I let it sit for a few minutes (hard to guess exactly how many... felt like between 3-5 min), and suddenly it came back and did all the things I tried to do while it was frozen. My config:

2.66 GHz i7
4 GB RAM
Hitachi 500GB 5400 RPM drive
High res screen
OSX 10.6.4

Anything else relevant I'm missing? I guess I'll wait and see if it happens again.

Are you still getting crashes--after getting rid of your Seagate, updating to 10.6.4, and updating Flash?

My crashes I'm usually using flash...haven't had a crash in .6.4 (yet) and I have the SeaGate. So I wonder if these 3 things have fixed it for you, cause if so maybe that solution will work for me too. Let us know!

I had 2 kernel panics with 10.6.3 and the original Seagate. Then installed Hitachi 7K500 and it worked fine for a couple of weeks. I upgraded to 10.6.4 and then a couple days later I installed Flash 10.1 and it crashed on the same day when I installed new flash player.

At the moment when it crashed I had an external 20" ACD connected and running in dual display mode. I had Safari with a few tabs open (some of them had websites with flash ads), iTunes playing, and Maill.app open. Weird thing - nothing, I mean - nothing, in the console log regarding that last crash, just a gray screen of death...

SO, is it safe to buy a 2010 MacBook Pro?

I don't want to spend $3,500 - 4,000 and have these freeze issues.

Should I wait?

Just to add my two cents to this:

I have a new Macbook Pro 15" i7, with the standard resolution display (it's a stock machine, other than the 7,200 RPM HDD). It was delivered about 9 days ago, and since then it's been absolutely fine for everything I've thrown at it (Including some fairly intense sessions in Team Fortress 2). The heat issue I was so worried about before I ordered the machine hasn't bothered me at all; even right after playing TF2, the temperature never seemed to go above 63 degrees or so.

Then this morning, it suddenly started freezing at seemingly random intervals. Since then I've had it freeze up on me about 10 times, doing everything from playing TF2 to just browsing the web.

I phoned up Apple and managed to speak to a very nice senior technician, who talked me through the usual stuff (resetting PRAM, repairing permissions, etc). As part of the usual routine, he told me to download and install 10.6.4 via Software Update (which I didn't even know was out yet), so I happily obliged.

This is where it gets really odd: Every time I try to install the update, I get a kernel panic. The computer seems to be running fine, but the instant I press that "install and restart" button, the Kernel Panic screen pops up and I have to do a hard reboot.

The technician then told me to reinstall Snow Leopard from the install DVD, which I've just done, but it hasn't solved the problem. He's promised to call me back tomorrow, so hopefully I can get this sorted out once and for all.

(Incidentally, when I asked him whether this was a common issue with these Macbook Pros, he claimed it wasn't, and there are "no known issues" with the model. Make of that what you will.)

Personally, although I don't have any hard evidence to back this up, I'd put money on it being something to do with the graphics card switching thing. The evening before it started freezing, I installed grxCardStatus, and I noticed that each freeze seemed to occur just after the discrete Nvidia graphics card took over. For a while I was even considering the possibility that it was the gfxCardStatus app itself causing the problems, but the problem continued even after I uninstalled it.

The kernel panics when trying to install updates make me suspect it might be a hardware problem. Which, if it's as commonplace as this thread and others on the internet make it out to be, could be a big problem for Apple :(

 OK I had another panic just a few minutes ago. Below is the console log. I highlighted some lines that refer to graphics drivers in the log. Do you guys think it's a driver issue? The power saving option had enabled graphics switching at the time of crash. I had a 20" ACD connected at the time of the crash. I had it running Safari 5 with several tabs, iTunes, and Mail.

SO, is it safe to buy a 2010 MacBook Pro?
No (in my opinion). This issue is a major problem that makes the "perfect" Apple laptops useless. If it was the previous major problem... flickering (search for "flickering macbook pro late 2008), at least, you could use the computer, it was annoying but it didn't interrupt your work as much as this.
You'd better wait for next revision as I don't think Apple will ever acknowledge this problem (they would've to fix a lot of computers...), or you wait for a software fix, but if it hasn't been released yet... I wouldn't count on it.

I don't want to spend $3,500 - 4,000 and have these freeze issues.
Whether there weren't or not this freezes, I wouldn't spend 4000$ on Apple. That's just crazy... big time... but if you want to spend that much I think you should wait so you don't feel like you wasted your money in case you have this problem on the unit that is delivered to you :/

Should I wait?
Yes, you should. I am waiting too :) And I'm quite confident that I will be waiting till next revision, which means... next year. Too bad for Apple, and good for me, as this money is making some more money while it waits ;)
But something tells me, that either Intel releases the next chip without the integrated graphics card... or these problems will continue...

Ditto

Hi guys.

today, bought my very first Mac, the very base model MBP 15. 2.4 i5 4gb 320gb Hitachi. First thing as per norm for pc user, bootcamp, put on XP and within installing DIRT 2 and then running Dirt 2. BSOD. Went back to SL, installed COD4 through steam. From install to playing... Crash. Have had 4 BSOD's on XP and 2 crashs on SL. All the times its been trying to load GFX things like Flash items on safari, and Shockwave on Steam.

Just guessing? the graphics switching

Another variable i want to add to this issue. Are the users who experiences freezes or crashes have bootcamp setup? I noticed two of my last crashes was due to the ntfs driver causing a panic kernel error.

I haven't had any more freezes since the first one I posted about a little earlier. But I also haven't tried playing any Half Life 2 since then either. I might try playing some more later tonight, and I'll post if I get another freeze.

Oh, and no boot camp here. But I'm not getting crashes or kernel panics. Just the temporary freezing issue.

10.6.4.

i5 MB Pro.

I totally abuse this machine, and haven't got ANY freezes. However I use it a lot while it's closed and when I'm doing A LOT of work , the mouse can get skippy. However this happened with my old 13' MB Pro too, I think it could be some weird heat issue ...

Alright, just finished playing for about an hour and a half. Been browsing the web now for about 15 min and no freezing at all. Last one must have been a fluke? (knock on wood)

No problems

I have had no problems with my MBP 17" i7 so I don't know what the talk is about. Extremely happy.

EXTREMELY helpful... a thousand thanks. Please post your PayPal account info so I can immediately deposit an appropriate amount of cash for that invaluable information.

Or —if you'd like to "know" more —we could swap MBPs.

If you're lucky and get one that has no issues, they're great machines. Sorry to see so many people are having trouble with theirs.

I've had my 15" i7 for about two and half weeks now with no issues. I've been using it daily with various applications from email, web browsing to hard core photo editing. I haven't had a single crash as described here yet. I must have been lucky. My machine does run hot though. The CPU is constantly in the 60 - 80 C range, occasionally climbing to 90C. That is HOT. Good thing the aluminum chasis helps cool the laptop down fairly quickly. I guess these i7's just run hot in general.

They're great, best MacBook I've ever had...

I had the 17" i7 2.66GHz macbook pro for about 2 months (sold it a few weeks back) and it never froze even once.

I swapped out the HDD to an intel SSD since day 1.. I wonder if its due to the stock HDD causing the freezing issues?

Also are other people with the 17" having this freeze or the 15" mbps are?

Update: I came upon a website where this blogger pin points these freezing issues to the stock harddrive that apple ships with. Maybe this is why I never seen my 17" i7 freeze since I've always been using my own hdd?

This is stated at least once per page. People with SSDs have the issue; it's not just the stock HD causing the problem.
