I ordered my MBP 15" i5 on release day and have had it for a little over two weeks now. I installed an WD 640GB 5200rpm drive immediately after I got my MBP and it has the same problem.

So if it is the disc it's not just affecting Apples discs... :(

Really, really hoping they'll solve this with an update! Don't want to send it back. And as it stands now it seems like a gamble sending it in for repairs since no one knows for sure if it's HW or SW related...

i5 base model with HR-AG, got it for 2 weeks now, its turned on every day for 12-16 hours and didn't freeze once. Got the Intel Postville 160 GB SSD.

Yeah, same SSD here. I think it's related to the graphics switching. Only happened to me once and it was going from full screen youtube video (nvidia) to windowed (intel). Locked up for about a minute but then sorted itself out.

I have switching disabled anyway. Its the nVidia GPU all the time.

Yeah, then you wouldn't see it. I manually enable switching when on battery power, which explains why it hasn't shown up on my machine until now. I imagine people that always leave graphics switching enabled would see this more than us.

Because I experienced a freeze means everyone will? Possibly, but not necessarily.

Maybe you should take a statistics class? Probably an English class too while you're at it ;)

And of course you leave out the post where I acknowledge it's more widespread than I initially thought even before I experienced this issue (post #34 on this page). Fox news would be proud of you!

- About english? Obviously I'm not english speaker. So I just do the minimums to what it's needed here, wich is "communication".
- About statistics? Belive me when I say, I'm good on'em. ;)
But I was not trying to exemplificate some case to make "statistics" here. I was just trying to put you in evidence. ;)
- About "Fox News" theme... Yesterday I was going to reply you, showing you that on OP, you could read the same link that suddenly "opened your eyes" a post ago from yours. But then I realized that you simply were ignoring me on this thread and on the other one (the poll one), in wich I answered you giving the exact information.
So that's why I decided to simply "elide" this reply from you on my "quoting frenezi", because you needed about two threads and a lot of posts to realize what was on this same post on #1 - OP, or in the poll one, answered by myself: a link.

Why don't they just let people select all Intel too, that would solve a lot, and allow a user switchable all Intel or all Nvidia. The auto-switching seems to be a bit too much pushing the envelope, and a lot of people want to do all Intel while on battery.

I've had the issue a couple of times. I've had my Macbook Pro for a week and a half. As soon as I got it, I installed a 160 GB Intel X-25M SSD, so that reinforces the idea that the hard drive is not the problem.

It hasn't happened to me in about a week, and I'm not excessively concerned about it.

I have a 15'' i7 HR Glossy with 128 SSD and 4gb RAM. Absolutely ZERO problems with my machine. I had a couple hang ups due to poorly made programs but I was able to force quit every time successfully. My machine is lightning fast. My only real complaint is the resolution is a little too small on some apps and menus. I have gotten use to it but I really want resolution independent software so I can scale my programs at will...but this isn't a hardware problems, it's software.

No issues here as well with my launch day 15" i7 MBP.

Granted I only used the stock hard drive for maybe 2 hours to test out the machine, then swapped in C300 SSD.

Freezes..

My 15" i7 HR AG 500Gb 7200rpm has frozen twice.

I'm now wrestling with the issue of whether to return it within the 14 days, or wait for a fix.

I'm inclined to wait for a fix. Otherwise I'm very pleased with it - it's fast and quiet, and I love the screen. I've toyed with the idea of getting an iPad and a mac mini instead, but there's too much I can't do with an iPad to justify it.

Mind you I guess I might have to get one as well when I get to play with one.

I'd consider replying to your post but it was unreadable.

Back to the topic...

I did not have this problem with my base 15" MBP 2.53 i5 that I got from Amazon. Since coconutBattery shows two months old status, I believe it is one of the first 2010 MBPs.

I got the same one from Amazon too and I'm having issues.

ive had mine since launch day with absolutly no problems. on battery, charging, on the fly switching or just the discrete card on. never a single freeze.

so your comment about ALL machines having a problem is false. and your comment about its just a matter time, that can be applied to anything. technically all our computers are going to melt. its just a matter of time..

17 in i7 2.66 4 gb ram 500 gb hdd AG

so let me get this straight, hanging is when the computer gets unusually slow right?

if so this has happened to me on my 4th day of ownership..

was running safari, i chat, photobooth and openoffice. trying to type a paper that wouldn't type because it was hanging/freezing.

my first i7 15" died on me i think it froze constantly right after entering mac osx. After numerous formats, it works on safe mode but could not boot regularly -- very weird if you search my post it gives a fuzzy screen of pixels. Cursor still worked....but yeah it was frozen and hung forever. The apple store was quick to change it out for me because people were looking at it saying well im not buying a macbook anymore HAHAHA

i attached the hang picture on boot. have fun guys! the new one actually has had no problem!!

Curse of the Rev A strikes again (i5/i7 architecture machines) !

Atleast there is now a damn good reason to consider the 13" MBP Core 2 machines :D (Tried and Trusted Tech... assuming the issue doesnt affect these machines that is!)

On a serious note... u guys have my sympathies. It does appear however to be widespread enough to start getting some serious attention... and once the issue hits the front pages of Macrumors / appleinsider etc then I think Apple will start talking about 'a fix'.

OK so I just read through this thread and this sounds like a problem I've recently been having. Can anyone verify if this is the same issue?

I was attempting (probably unwisely) to record screen video of the Starcraft 2 beta using Quicktime X:

1) Open Quicktime X
2) Start screen recording
3) Open Starcraft 2 full screen

Result: Black Screen. Mouse freeze. Unable to close with option-ctrl-esc.

I didn't wait for ten minutes, but after 2-3 minutes I held down the power button to shut down.

Note that this is reproducable for me 100% of the time, but a fellow i7 user in the games forum claims he can do it fine.

I had similar trouble as well - everything freezing and mouse being able to move but not being able to do anything else. Cannot force quit, have to shut down with power switch. On top of this I had a hardware error. 3 week old macbook pro is back in the apple store and will take a week to get back to me :( I hope it doesn't keep screwing up - so much loss of productivity.

second time... While launching Parallels 5. Complete freeze with only mouse able to move. Some pixel corruption that i'll upload later. 100% sure that it's something with switching between cards. I don't know what to do. I bought mine 3 weeks ago, so I'm out of the 14 days period for exchange. Ugh... Guess I'll wait for Apple response.

Hopefully they can fix it with Graphics Drivers.

Im sure thats all it will take since this is Apple's first take automatic switchable graphics.
