Help from Apple Senior Advisor

Spoke to an Apple Senior Advisor, he indicated that the mini displayport to DVI adapter requires a dual link DVI cable (and that the external display supports dual link dvi). Went to Staples picked one up, and now my MacBookPro is driving my HP LP2475w perfectly.

That's weird. My late 2008 MBP outputs to my LP2475W perfectly with just the Apple miniDP to DVI adaptor.

anyone reporting issues with mbp 2011 and dell 2408?

same story as U2410. i've the latest A04 made in may 2011. what i noticed compared to the A00 and A01 revision of the same monitor that the pixelations is gone - or not really detectable.

however the display is still recognized as TV (all latest updates to date)
some monitors work, some don't with mDP - > DP port. DVI adapter fixed most peoples problems. that's not acceptable solution for me.

Dual-Link DVI is only used for resolutions higher than 1920x1200. In order to even be able to use it with a Macbook you need to get the Dual-Link mDP-to-DVI adapter that costs around $100/€100. All the smaller (called passive) adapters output single-link only.

so the only way to fix the problem is to get the latest revision of the monitor??? damn my 2408 is almost 3 yrs old. i don't think dell can do anything... i don't even think they make this monitor anymore... :(

edit: or use the miniDP to DVI... that suxs.

MBP(ThunderBolt)+HPLP2475w

mDP->DP gives artifacts, mDP->DVI works.

I was really disappointed with the quality of the display on this new MBP. They seem to get worse every year. Paid extra for antiglare, getting terrible viewing angles and yellowish tint around the edges. Some cheap-o TN in a professional product. Hail to the raising profits!

the latest revision made the difference. no visible artifacts, however the system still thinks it's TV.

seems like my display settings on the external monitor are now returned to normal. It appeared that the settings on the monitor were set to Cinema and once I changed it to Dynamic Contrast, the quality improved and the text is no longer pixelated. Everything is just so much improved......

Now I don't have to worry about external monitor quality anymore....

Bonus...

Same problem with Macbook Air 11" and Dell U2410 A04. Looks like I'll have to wait for Lion to see if this gets resolved. How frustrating :(

I was using a 2010 MacBook air with a Dell 2408wfp via a miniDP to hdmi cable
I did not have any issues
Hoping to get the mbp 13 2011 model soon. Hope it works without issues.

i have the same monitor...

i'm having issues with it when i use the displayport cable... maybe i'll try using a displayport to DVI cable...

hello.I have macbook pro 2011 17" and the dell u2410 A05.Which is the best way to connect them? Thanks

Just would like to share with everyone I see this issue on Mac Mini with Lion as well ...

I have a mac mini 2011 (intel gfx) facing the same problem using HDMI to HDMI port. It works fine using the HDMI-DVI adapter (included in the box) connect using DVI (U2010).

Is there an issue using direct HDMI to monitor ?

Maybe there is a reason why Apple included the HDMI-DVI connector....

Lastly DVI vs Display port.... Which one better and has future ?

DVI is dying. just like VGA did. this issue is across the line with certain monitors.

The issue described here is really the DELL monitors signal processing / filtering issue for YCbCr signal - both DP and HDMI have the same issue
The result is how DELL monitors process the signal when it is in YCbCr format.
If the input is RGB ( when connected by DVI/VGA for example ) the picture is much better.
You can change some settings on your monitor to make it look different and maybe better for you.
Look for sharpness or other picture settings, like video or graphics type, gamma.

Why MBP sends YCbCr instead of RGB:
One reason is that the monitor reports that It has HDTV capabilities.
Another reason that for HDTV displays YCbCr is default on recent Apple systems - ones that support HDMI.

Can you change Apple system to output RGB instead of YCbCr: no.
Changing connection type to DVI or adjusting the display signal settings ( set sharpness to 0 for example ) are the only options.

Same experience here as well with the W7 OS. everything works great on there. no issues with the screen. the problem is only with OS X

Try toggling between multi-display mode and mirroring a few times. This resets and recycles the displays altering their resolution from native to mirror. In multi-display it may come up right.

Hey guys,

Jumping on the thread again...

Has anyone had luck with their Dell 2408 with all of the latest Thunderbolt firmware/software updates?

I've been trying to use the 2408 with mini DP to DP cable from monoprice, but still giving me issues. Mainly, the MBP is reading the 2408 as a TV.

Zatravka's talk about YCbCr issue seems to also relate for me. For example, I have my Xbox 360 connected to the 2408 via HDMI and the MBP connected by mini DP. Once I connect the 2408 to the MBP and then switch the input to HDMI with the Xbox on, the feed from Xbox is totally green color and if I select on some settings it's no longer on RGB and in YCbCr.

I'm really not sure what's going on here. Some people on the thread are saying they're having no problems with their MBP and 2408... I don't know if it's just my MBP... I wish I had another display to test this... :(

Any help would be appreciated!!!

As I explained earlier there is nothing wrong with your MBP - It just sends the HDMI or DP signal in YCbCr format.
You see pixelated image with a lot of ringing only because DELL 2408 applies strong sharpening filter to the signal. Why DELL does it for YCbCr signal I do not know.
But try to adjust the sharpness using the display OSD buttons.
