I have a MBA 11" which I'm connecting to a Dell U2410f, and I'm having the same problems with both a Display Port and HDMI adaptor.

What I'm wondering is if it's possible to somehow hack/patch/break the "Television: Yes" mode in OS X, since even on my 1080p television the quality is horrid

Kinda off topic, but do not buy VGA if you want high resolution. VGA only allows for 480i, HDMI can give you 1080p if your TV supports it.

Not true. I'm not sure if I'd be sensitive to an issue like the one you guys are describing but I have a micro accessories VGA adapter that appears to work fine with my Sony KDL-40HX800 television insofar as higher resolutions go. It's definitely not feeding a 480i signal at the very least! Maybe you're confusing it with composite or S-video, which do have bandwidth limitations preventing them from sending any more?

At any rate, VGA connectors have been the standard for PCs for many years now and they can support resolutions much higher than 1080p, so long as your device supports it and there's no crippleware in your computer artificially restricting the unprotected analog connection. It's also a better connection than component video, since it sends more visual data down the line, including true RGB information. It's the reigning champ of analog connections really.

EFI Update

Can anyone confirm this issue resolved with the EFI and software updates released last night for the MBPro? I don't have mine with me today at the office so won't be able to test until tonight.

Nope. Doesn't work for me. I guess I'll have to make some time to call Apple again to complain.

+1 - doesn't work for me as well. Upgraded to the new 1.4 software and 2.1 EFI and am still having issues.

Same problem U2410 mDP to DP connection with contrasty picture

I want to hook on this thread. I just bought a 2011 2.2GHz MacBook Pro 15" and I have a Dell U2410. I've used the U2410 for more than a year with my older 2008 MacBook Pro 15" 2.5Ghz.

I have the nasty contrasty screen when connecting mini displayport to displayport. I've run all the Apple software updates including new EFI firmware to no avail.
:(

Hope Apple fixes this.

I was really hopeful for the EFI too ;-(

I've decided to take the risk and ordered U2410 A4 revision and see if it resolves. will report next week.

Still broken for me too. I had high hopes before I installed the update.

Bought the Apple mdp to DVI adapter today.

The mdp > DVI adapter from Apple works fine $30 later. The bummer is when the screen goes to sleep the U2410 doesn't power down. On my 2008 MacBook when the display went to sleep and the cpu stayed running the U2410 would go into power save.

If the computer goes to full sleep the monitor does too. I run renders overnight. I'll have to remember to turn off the monitor.

What did apple say ? Do you have a case number so you can lever your way to speak to an engineer ?

i'll test the U2410 A4 revision today. it was manufactured March 2011.

the dell U2410 rev. A04 is still behaving as TV. however the fuzzy effect is not as bad - almost non existent compared to the A00-A01 revision.

still it makes me

Just want to pitch in. My 24 ACD also flickers and randomly blacks out for a few seconds even after the EFI updates and patches. I have a 2011 17 inch Macbook Pro and tried it with other monitors with no problems.

In case anyone is interested I am now using the U2311H with a miniDP to DP cable from Monoprice and have had no issues. Seems the problem is limited to the U2410.

I have an HP ZR24W on the way (week or two) and wanted to have a displayport to MDP hooked up so I could just plug in my macbook (2011) whenever I want to. I'm hoping the flickering and other issues don't happen with this monitor.

Anyone have experience with the 2011 macbook pro with an HP ZR24W using Displayport to MiniDisplayPort? Either way, I'll post my results when I end up getting the monitor.

the update seems to have fixed the issue for me untill today - when the problem returned ;/ I hope they'll fix it in the next Mac OSX (Lion)

I am having the same issue with an ASUS PA246Q 24" IPS LCD display and my 2011 15" MacBook Pro.

It almost seems as if some sort of sharpness filter or lossy compression is being applied to the DisplayPort output when using a mini DP to DP cable.

As I believe other posters have mentioned, the issue doesn't present itself when I boot into Windows 7 on the same machine.

I'm going to contact Apple and ask that they provide me with a free mini DP to DVI adapter since that seems to resolve the issue for others posting in this thread.

ask them when they will fix the problem. sure many users reported this issue.

Apple ended up having me run some utilities to generate display timing information and forwarded it to their engineering team. After a few days I got a call back from the support rep who said that they're going to pass the information along to their driver development team and are sending me a Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter to correct the issue in the meantime.

Hopefully this adapter fixes the issue as it as for others who have posted in this thread.

great, hope the engineers will REALLY work on this.

No change in the latest Snow Leopard update (10.6.8 on my 11" MBA + Dell U2410f), but good to hear the driver dev team knows about it (and might even fix it) :).

I just did a software update today and only after than did I experience an external display issue. Backgrounds seem fine, but words/icons seem to be pixelated and not clear on the external display, which is a Samsung 24" LED Widepanel operating at 1080p via an HDMI cable.

Everything worked perfectly up until this update.

Thoughts?

dell 2408

just got my mbp 2.3 i7 2011 on monday.

used a mini display cable to my dell 2408. cable was from monoprice.

extremely bad pixelation and overall terrible image quality. updated the OS to 10.6.8 immediately out of the box and still the same...

the display works fine with mini display port with macbook air 11 inch.

for some reason, the mbp 2.3 recognizes the 2408 as a TV... wtf? never happened before...

thinking about updating the firmware on the 2408, but something tells me it's the mbp. i hope it's not another nvidia (early '08 mbp) type of an issue with the GPU. i would die...:(
