Early 2009 24" iMac had ATI 4850 as a BTO which is the same GPU as in late 2009 27" iMac. 24" iMacs used special CPUs with lower TDP though so if 21.5" used crippled CPUs, it might be able to use similar graphics as its big brother.

How crippled are we talking about? If it's a reasonable compromise, then I'm all for better graphics performance.

Also, how likely do you think Apple would do that to the CPUs of 2011 21.5" (or possibly 23/24", if they happen to go that route)?

The CPUs 24" iMac used were pretty much mobile chips with higher TDP. The fastest one was 3.06GHz C2D and the fastest mobile C2D is also 3.06GHz. That would be mean the CPUs would be similar to what is found in current MBPs.

Apple decided to go with desktop CPUs when 21.5" and 27" iMacs were released so honestly, I think there is no chance that Apple switches back to mobile/special CPUs. In fact, ATI 5850M has only 4W higher TDP that 4670M which is found in 21.5" iMac so if Apple wanted to give the 21.5" some GPU power, they could easily put the 5850M in it since it should be fine in terms of TDP.

I'm so sick of all those failpad and iPhone news... iMacs should be coming next week, but no sites seem to care and post multiple rumors and concepts of what they might look like as everyone did with MBP. Whats happening?!
Now that I also found a new rumor about the black MB + the super high resolution wallpapers in OS Lion indicates we might get a retina display, maybe we could be expecting smth like this: http://www.ipodtouchhacks.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/new-imac-mockup.jpg ?

eww

I think we might just be disappointed come Tuesday, with the royal wedding tomorrow and may day one Monday that is a 4 day weekend for people here in the UK and i read somewhere that Apple never likes to release new products the day after a public holiday is this correct?

Or am i just being pessimistic???

Apple is an American company so me thinks the Royal Wedding and May Day are not factors in their release schedule. Easter, Christmas and the like I would assume have an influence on their release schedule as these are International holidays which affect many of their territories. Whilst it's no great revelation on my part I would be surprised if we don't see new iMac's come this Tuesday (3 May).

I really hope it is this week, the wait is starting to kill me!

It really is sad that I'm checking in here and some other Apple rumour sites about every 30 minutes or so...

if release is on tuesday, wouldnt we have any more info now? like spy fotos of packaging or any low quality screeenshots like we had on the macbook pro launch

It's possible on the low-end model if Apple "makes up for it" with a quad core i7.

They went to integrated 9400M gpu from a dedicated gpu in the low end model a few years back. IT was a bit of a step backwards if I remember correctly.

And I think it would be another step backwards. In my opinion, integrated graphics on a desktop computer makes no sense at all. I could understand that on a laptop, because of the battery, though.

I hope the low-end model will come with AMD dedicated GPU with at least 512MB of memory.

Don't be hating on the iPad. :(

I don't mind the lack of publicity. As long as the iMac will come out next week, I will be a happy camper.

:apple: don´t love desktop as much as their mobile device/computers. :apple: makes more money from them. In fact iMac is the best value mac ever been created. It performs better than macbook pros, a bit weaker than Mac Pros .. and price equally as macbook pros

And :apple: give you their cinema display LED to sweet things up. So :apple: make least money from an iMac. And in contrast, :apple: make most money on Macbook pros, air, iPads and iphone. Apple haters most oftenly eat and troll them, i might say they deserve it

An iPod touch cost about $300 .. add phone, sms and 3g functionality on it for another $400!! and then :apple: call it iPhone, yet so many people love it

Everything on the site says "dispatched in 2 business days" or longer
Its because of the bank holidays it has nothing to do with the refresh.

still id rather i was wrong :/

Edit: you would think the rumour mills would actually validate this information themselves its not hard to open a new tab
and take a-look is it? :p

Ahh, you are right...hope they are coming anyway!

a few things I'd like to see with the iMacs, well not necessarily the iMacs problem but when using the iMac display in TDM to be able to have the bluetooth keyboard/mouse transfer to the other system if it were a Mac, to be able to use the imacs keyboard/mouse instead of having to have separate ones.

Would come in handy for working on a MacPro that is primarily a storage or rendering machine, as which i plan to do is get a base /refurb MacPro and high end iMac for gaming and main machine and the mac pro as my storage and rendering server and use the iMac display to monitor it.

it'd be kind of cool if the iMac had a mother board tray like the macpro that had all the parts on it that could slide out from the bottom of the iMac.
Remove a few screws or a removable/lockable latch and slide the tray out to replace the memory, hdd+ssd or add additional drives, change the opticaldrive, etc.
kindof like that image of the macbook being slid into the side of a imac or display. but visually im sure apple would want it to be discrete looking so the bottom grill of the imac might be the most feasible.

oh and fast data transfers via thunderbolt if you have other headless macs connected to it....im wondering if you may be able to hae multiple headless macs or mbps connected to the port and switch between them ...

The one feature that would compel me to upgrade a i7 loaded late 2010 is an easy user replaceable hard drive (a door on the back or side slot). Notebooks have it, no reason why iMacs should not

2 questions

I have 2 questions. Do you think the 2011 imac will support 2 monitors without any lag in the second monitor.

Will they offer the free ipod around the 20th again and should I wait for it?

thx,

-Alan
