So is this Wednesday/Thursday no longer a possibility? I ask as I now believe Tuesday won't happen but a launch with the iPhone is that possible?

I don't see the iPhone as a problem as it's not really a new model so it can be released rather silently.

The iMac as well will not sport anything too extraordinary apart from the (probably rather big) spec bump. Thunderbolt is already available on MBP's, as is Sandy Bridge. No new form factors (or we'd have heard something pointint in that direction) so this probably isn't too big a thing either.

Hypothetically, one can conceive of reasons to release them at the same time. Because between iPad 2/MBP and WWDC they could use something to attract attention, and neither of these releases is big enough to do it on their own.

WWDC is approaching and I'm pretty sure they'll want to release the iMac some time before that.

LTRFTP, strangely I went into PC world yesterday to play worth the 27 inch iMac and spoke to the 'Mac Expert', he was so keen to get me to buy the current gen iMac that he said the refresh would not be until June/July.

When I said I would wait anyway he proceeded to plug this site and strongly recommended I follow the buyers guide advice. Hopefully he was hinting that the expected refresh date is on the money :)

I've now been without a home computer for 5 months easily awaiting an iMac to start iOS application development :D, really can't wait, I'm driving my girlfriend crazy with updated news from this site lol

I really wish i had an Apple Store around here.... Its about a 2 hour drive. Which I guess really isn that far but its just out of the way for me.

Ah Leeds does not have an Apple Store sadly, so it's all I have...

Even the resellers in Leeds aren't that great :'(

I also live in leeds and ive asked my stepdad to take me to manchester, krcs are ok vut the staff are very moody.
;)

I hope they introduce the 24" again. Although I don't think my dad would complain with a 27" for his birthday. His iMac is a few years old!

I hope its the 3rd! Can't wait to get my first iMac. Right now I have a Macbook from 2006, a first gen Ipad, new Apple TV and a iPhone 3GS! I'm actually happy with my iPhone 3GS. The only reason I would upgrade to the 4 (or 5) is so the kids can video conference with their grandparents (who both have the 4). But really, I want a 4G phone. Of course, that would actually mean that AT&T would have to have a fast 4G network, so maybe I will buckle and get the 5 when it comes out rather then wait another couple years.

Anyway, my understanding is that the new iMacs were supposed to have a more affordable price-point. This would clearly be great.

Given the fact that I am new to the mac world as far as desktops are concerned, I'm curious what I should get. Here is what I plan on doing on the computer:

I am building a social networking website (have done so with php, cake, eclipse, css), so would continue my project on my mac. Possibly connect an external drive as a database.

I also do a good amount of home video work. Right now I leverage iMovie, but may upgrade to Final Cut once I get a iMac.

Other then that, typical storing and editing of photos in iPhoto, listening to music in iTunes, some Excel/Word work and accounting software.

Thoughts on how much power I would need for my new purchase?

Why do you guys want a 24-inch iMac?

I for one would opt for a 24" version. My pc just now has a 23" screen so i don't really want to down grade screen size to 21.5 and i think a 27" would be too big for my desk and the fact it will be used for mainly gaming and general web browsing.

I would like the 27" screen but i haven't actually seen one in operation to judge how big it will be in my enviroment. Like others in the UK i've no Apple store closer than a few hours away so seeing one in person is not so easy.

I went to the Apple store last night near me to try to decide which I liked better, the 27" or 21.5"
While the 27" was certainly massive, it didn't appear to be so gargantuan that it would look out of place - there certainly is a lot of real estate on that thing.
The one thing I didn't like is when I maximized a program, it didn't fill up the entire screen like I am used to on a Windows machine. That will take a little getting used to (unless there is some setting that I missed that keeps things in certain places on the screen).

The 21.5 was nice but the graphics didn't seem as crisp...it could have been the video card in the particular one I was looking at (they didn't have them labeled as which had which configuration), but even web sites didn't appear to be sharp in the text like the 27" did.

When I have enough $$$ saved up, I will be going 27" - my wife won't be happy but it will be cheaper than a higher end 15" MBP

Bigger is always better. But then my TV is 145"

Trying to talk the wife into letting me get 3 27" monitors for an eyefinity setup. I'll make it work one way or another!

Why do you guys want a 24-inch iMac?

21,5" is too small for most people, especially when they want to go for something better/bigger.
27" on the other hand is rather huge, besides the iMac-owners, almost nobody has a display of 27" or bigger... even bigger wouldn't be a monitor anymore but a tv.
24" is in between and a perfect size everybody would like. It's also a better choise for dual monitor settups

You contradict yourself, you say 2x27 is to big but then you say "Bigger isn't always better."

Huh? He isn't contradicting himself.

He needs 2 displays, and 2 times 27" is too big he says. So bigger isn't always better.

Umm... Who is going to download 6-7 GB from the App store?
There are MANY people who only have 1.5 to 5 Mb DSL/Cable?
I can drive to the Apple store and back and still have my day rather then tying up my Internet connection for 5Hrs+

i'm stuck on 1mb :)
so 7gb would take about 17 hours!

Just a thought and this is unlikely but is it possible they will update them alongside the white iphone when the store goes down tomorrow?
:)

I am sure it will be may 3rd release .. will get the 27inch i7 model .. won't go for ssd - it's too expensive and my usage won't justify it .. although i would be pleasantly suprised if ssd+hdd combo is standard on the imacs

i plan to use it as a computer, screen for my xbox 360 and satellite tv box using kanex or something similar unless imac has hdmi in  (I know it won't)

ALL IN ONE! :D

I really hope we get a 23/24" iMac. Love my 27" but a smaller machine would suit me better.
