I've got the answer - lay the iMac down, insert into a desk or coffee table so it is level, like a big iPad! With a touch screen it would be great for gaming - imagine PONG on a Retsina screen!

A bit like the Microsoft Surface.

I think the touch screen patent that Apple did last year looked pretty awesome.

Some are crazy; some arn't.
Trackpad as standard What sort of dreams are you having? - Why not a holographic trackpad projected on to your table?
3D viewing capabilities (although could be a messy complication for something which may not last) Without glasses would be cool, but expensive. With glasses would be cool, for the few 3D games and the few 3D blu r... I don't think Apple will do this; I think, by 2012 / 2013, when it is certain if 3D is going to catch on / be a flop, Apple may put a 3D-no-glasses display in their iPad, by iPad 5. The 3D would be very cool.
1080p input (as with my thread) HDMI? For your PS3, and your blu ray. Apple may do this (1 in about a thousand chance).
USB 3 That'll happen in 2012, when Intel adopts USB 3.0.
Slightly improved bass in speakers That is probably going to happen, they're always improving things like that.
Slightly lower price
Design to stay the same (its beautiful)
I'll add: Light Peak By 2012 max.

Code:
1199$ 21.5" iMac

Intel Core i3-2100 (3.1GHz)
AMD 65xxM with 256MB GDDR5
500GB HD
2x2GB RAM; option for 4x2GB

1499$ 21.5" iMac

Intel Core i3-2120 (3.3GHz); option for Core i5-2500S (2.7/3.7GHz)
AMD 67xxM with 512MB GDDR5
1TB HD; option for 2TB
2x2GB RAM: option for 4x2GB

1699$ 27" iMac

Intel Core i3-2120 (3.3GHz)
AMD 67xxM with 512MB GDDR5; option for AMD 6950M with 1024MB GDDR5
1TB HD; option for 2TB
2x2GB RAM; options for 4x2GB, 2x4GB and 4x4GB

1999$ 27" iMac

Intel Core i5-2500 (3.3/3.7GHz); option for Core i7-2600 (3.4/3.8GHz)
AMD 6950M with 1024MB GDDR5
1TB HD; option for 2TB
2x4GB RAM; option for 4x4GB

This is a really good prediction. I'm actually hoping the i7 won't be a BTO option this year. They should have i3 AND i5 21 inchers, and i5 and i7 27 inchers as base (however, it probably doesn't leave any room for any kind of BTO option, does it?). The 6950 would be badass, but they'll probably only go up to the 68xx (I'm guessing), and keep the Ram at 4GBs for all the models. In any case, the top model sounds awesome.

I think the Hardware(not including the graphics card) is great for it's price.
27" could stay or upgrade to 30". Doesn't matter for me. USB3 or Light Peak or plain and simple USB2. Doesn't matter. What I really want is a retina display. That would really wow me.

It's near enough "retina". The iMac's PPI is, I think, 108. Which isn't 300. However, because you are further away from it, dependent on your vision, it can look like the iPhone 4's "retina" display.

Like a HD TV. A 40 inch TV at full HD, is about 50ppi. Which isn't 300. However, at the distance that you watch TV, you cannot distinguish the pixels.

It doesn't matter how much ppi the device has (well, it does, a little bit); but, how far you are away from it (and the size of the screen).

I've been looking at old stock Mac Pro's for expandability, but it's hard to rationalize a 2009 2.93ghz Mac Pro if the next iMac i7 have 3.4ghz. Especially with Intel stating that the copper version of lightpeak is ready. We all know that Apple will be the first to implement lightpeak, the question is when? Then how much for external drives and multi disk enclosures.

2009 2.93ghz Mac Pro $2050

2011 iMac i7 3.4ghz? Lightpeak? $2200 - 200 discount. 27" display included.

The consumer parts are passing the pro parts in the prosumer market, at least processor wise.

I'd pay extra for built in SSD like the MBA too.

Replaceable hard drive would be nice. I would love to be able to add a SSD on my own.

Otherwise the usual spec updates I guess.

USB3 might be nice although Apple may hold out for lightpeak.

Not sure what else. Make the trackpad a no cost option to the magic mouse.

******But I can brainstorm some more stuff.....

small battery so you can move imac around house?

Ability to break off the imac and use as an iPad complete with iOS built-in.

ports on the side. No optical drive option. ITs' a desktop. Anyone needing an optical drive can buy an external one.

I'd love some wake from sleep options in conjunction with the ATV.

I guess they would have to use x58 chipset Boards or otherwise cut graphicspower by using PCIe lanes for USB3...

There's no way they're going to use X58. X58 only supports LGA-1366 Nehalem processors...not Sandy Bridge. Besides, the Core iX processors X58 supports are 45nm chips and have higher power requirements than the 32nm Core iX chips used in the last two iMac iterations. There's simply no way that Apple is going to go backwards from 32nm to 45nm.

Dunno about predictions, but I'd love to see improved connectivity, be it USB 3.0 or LightPeak. I'll be getting the new model whatever happens, but it would be much easier to justify if it has faster connectivity.

It's a desktop. It's not like weight is a concern. Keep the optical drive. It's not like you are going to be carrying around.
External makes sense for a laptop. Why carry the weight if you don't want to.

To have replacable hard drives and an optical drive Apple needs to have something like a bigger Mac mini. Put the iMac guts in a mid sized desktop case. Let me choose my monitor. Perfect Mac for me.

Nevermind then, according to your research. I've changed my mind. Light Peak and/or USB 3.0, a faster processor, and a bigger screen. ^_^
Not to mention the Retina display on an iMac would make us need a super powerful graphics card that only nvidia and ati has for prototype, and they would need to fix OSX for that.

I think Sandy Bridge and Light Peak is going to be a standard in the next iMac. Mostly because if Apple waits any longer they're going to be behind in the computer franchise since other companies are going for light peak/Sandy Bridge as well... But not at 2200, never. Maybe the same price. Around 2300-2400. Want it cheaper then buy a refurb.

i'm guessing we'll see sandy bridge and the base line will have a 1tb hard drive with all models having the option of ssd drive. For around the same price though i expct the base line price point to be 1100 in the UK now as 1020 sounds silly n I doubt they'll reduce it. Sound likely?

iMac 2012 is it worth to wait for?

Hi guys, yesterday I've found this article

http://www.cultofmac.com/rumor-new-...-improved-resolutions-and-standard-ssds/78885

and I must say, I'm impressed, wow, so soon.. I thought it would come late summer 2011 with Lion's premiere. I would like to buy a top-of-the-line iMac, but the thing is that I will get enough amount of money around september. Assuming that the next Mac upgrade will come not later than also March 2012, is it worth it to wait a little bit longer than getting this year's Mac?

As for predictions, how many more changes can Apple make on a 2012 iMac?
I believe we will get maybe a better design, maybe an USB 3.0, and who the hell knows what more. I'm sure that the technology will be much better, as it is every year. We'll get better hardware components like graphics, processors, it's obvious, but I'm mostly thinking about new technologies.

So what do you say guys, shall I wait? I'm possitve that most of you have red more about possible close future computer hardware technologies than me. Many thanks in advance for your opinions and respondes.

I think it's the rosiest of predictions one could make. Sandybridge would be the most likely option, but I'm not too optimistic about improved resolution and SSDs. I personally don't care for sandybridge, higher resolution or ssd ( cause I know I can upgrade to ssd in my imac later when they come done in price) What I hope most for is oled screen, but that probably won't be possible just now on such a large resolution, large screen.

That's nothing else but guessing. Increased resolution sounds rather unlikely as current GPUs don't support resolutions greater than 2560x1600. Besides, without resolution independence and better OS optimization for high res screens, bigger resolution would most likely cause more harm than good.

SSD as standard is possible but again, that, if something, is pure guessing. We may see them, or not.

no touch screen, steve jobs already said a vertical touch screen is awkward.

new intel architecture.

blu-ray possibly?

better graphics card.

note how he said vertical screen, yet we saw a patent for an imac with a swing down arm which allowed the whole imac to be at a nice angle almost flat on the desk.

i really hope they redesign, and add a touch screen. USB 3 would be nice aswell.

I waited off pulling the trigger last year due to the fact i thought they would redesign and add big features this year, which normally happens the year after the spec bump.

Im hoping this year is the big leap, so I'm not buying an iMac which will be completely outclassed by the 2012 iMacs.

battery = stupid, you're not gonna take an imac to the couch with you are you?

breaking off imac = bad idea, too heavy to be in anyway comfortable to use.

no optical drive = ridiculous, it's a desktop, we dont need to skimp on weight. most people who buy imacs are fairly heavy usage users, they need optical drives.

wake from sleep with ATV = very good idea.

I have the 24" 2.4GHz iMac, if I upgrade I would like to see...

30" iTouch (Highest Resolution)
Since Jobs will not give us a Blu-ray Disc Drive, make 2TB standard
8GB RAM
Improve the Speakers
HDMI Out (In would be nice)

why do people still think an iTouch is likely to happen? Didn't Steve himself say in the tests they had done in the lab they found it uncomfortable to use?

I think some people can't imagine how uncomfortable it would be to have such a big "touch" screen.
