Because if you want to beat a pitcher at his best, you want to beat him at your best. Bunting is cheap in the 8th and 9th inning in a no-hitter or perfect game situation.

I'm not so sure about that. If it was easy to bunt for a base hit, everyone would do it, wouldn't they? And in reality it depends on the circumstances. And if you're down by 1 or 2 runs, isn't it the job of the hitter to get on base any way you can? Especially if you're the tying run or bringing the tying run to the plate. The point is to win the game.

If the Yanks are being no hit by Beckett in the 8th and are down 1 run, you wouldn't want Gardner to bunt and try to get on?

Baseball etiquette. Just like you don't steal 3rd if you're on the right side of a blowout or try bunting to get on base late in a no-hit bid.

It's considered dirty and unsportsmanlike, but "cheating" is an extreme way t put it. Pretty much every team probably does it at least once during the season, so it's really one of those "just don't get caught" things.

I remember a few years ago (can't remember the teams) someone had a no hitter in the 8th and it was a 1-0 or 2-0 game and it was broken up by a bunt. The manager went ballistic after the game. But I think it's a good play, at least in a close game. A hitters job is to get on base, and certainly no team wants to be no hit. Why not do everything you can to break it up and get guys on base?

The pitcher was Curt Schilling and the manager was Bob Brenly. (More than a few years ago. I'm guessing around 2002.) I believe I'm quoting him correctly that he called it a "chickensh**" play. But like most things Brenly has ever said with a microphone nearby, he was wrong then and still wrong today. It was a one-run game, the winner was very much in doubt, and the hitter was someone who had bunted for hits many times over the years. It's not like Jim Thome tried to bunt during a 8-0 blowout or something. No pitcher should want a no-hitter in which the other team rolled over and gave up.

A similar thing happened recently in a game Justin Verlander was pitching. His no-hitter was similarly broken up and manager Jim Leyland said it was a completely legitimate play.

I agree with that.

Except it's considered cheating, not bad etiquette. That's how it's being described. That's what I don't understand.

I never took the article or SportsCenter story that way. It's pretty easy for a team to switch up their signs or use the "there's a man on second" set of signals to prevent what the Blue Jays did. However, it's understood (or at least some players think so) that such precautions aren't necessary when the bases are empty, as no one should be stealing signals the way the Blue Jays did.

I took this whole thing as a "Dude, really? Are you really gonna stoop to that level? You should be better than that" kind of complaint.

Uggla hitting streak at 30 games
Who have thought that when he was batting .170 before the break

Not only does he have the hitting streak
But he has multi hit games, raised his average significantly, hit HRs and driven in runs in crucial situations
Kudos to Dan the Man

And honestly, Kimbrel and Freeman should both be rookie of the year candidates

Kimbrel is good, but not great...but then again most ROY players are like that. If Atlanta's offense were better, Kimbrel wouldn't have anywhere near the number of saves (his save % isn't great). I'm afraid Kimbrel will be unable to maintain the past level of performance like Venters seems to be doing, as well as Hanson and JJ. At least Uggla is picking up some of the pitching slack. I think the best thing about Uggla's hitting streak is that he's hitting for average AND power.

Two run single by Uggla takes his streak to 31 games and ties "the biiiig boy" Rico Carty for the longest in Atlanta Braves history

I think Kimbrel is the real deal along with Venters, but only time will tell

Hanson and JJ have both been hurt since the break
JJ on the DL and Hanson's MRI showed tendonitis today
Thankfully Beachy has been taking up the slack

Lowe on the other hand has been abysmal most of the year

He's a second half pitcher, right?

I saw his no-hitter against Tampa Bay back in...2002? Why can't he pitch like that anymore? :(

Wow Brett Lawrie! It was the fifth game of his major league career, and he hit a grand slam tonight. Two HRs in five games already....amazing start for the 21 year old.

Go Jays....

I'm hoping it's one of those stretches where he struggles. Seems like every year he has a period where he'll blow 2 or 3 saves in a row. Hopefully it's one of those things, because he's been pretty solid all year. We'll see, but the good news is that the back end of our pen can pick up the slack if need be.
