My 21.5" iMac shipped today and Apple mailed me the ultimate delivery date of May 26th. Both shipping and the new estimated delivery date a 1 day before initial dates.

I read about a benchmark request, I am not so familiar with benchmarking but very happy to do so. Any suggestions on applications to use for benchmarking?
Personally, I'd be much more interested in the device information from the System Profiler utility. Publishing a screenshot of that would be invaluable to a lot of people.

Yeah, agreed! Supersid, If you could launch System Profiler and post a screenshot of the Serial ATA section under Hardware, that would be awesome. I've attached a screenshot of what this looks like.

Lots of people are wondering whether or not the SSDs are SATA2 or SATA3, and this is how we can tell.

Order Update

I ordered a 27" i7 with SSD (2GB radeon, 2TB HDD) on May 3 - with estimated shipping on 17/6 (arriving 22/6). I rang Apple today and they have advised that it is currently being assembled and due for completion this Friday (to then be shipped). My order still shows several dates, but the person on the phone advised that they could see more detail, and it should arrive next week.

If that is the case, then all models with SSD + 1tb HD should be shipping close to the same time.

I'm curious, where did this screenshot come from? Are you an employee at an Apple reseller or something? It's interesting that someone who ordered on May 18 had theirs ship already... You're sure these all had SSDs?

I hope we start to see people posting here saying they've received theirs. Would love to know the specs on the SSD.

I work for a reseller here in Australia, the screenshot is from Apple's channel order system. I am 100% positive all of those models are SSD's, interestingly the ones that have been marked as shipped are all for university orders... it would be a shame if they are getting priority.

Anyone know if the Apple retail stores have any BTO's in stock at this point. The 21" with a SSD and 1 TB drive has a ship time of just 2-4 days so I wonder if perhaps the stores have them now.

Apple stores will not have SSD models in stock, ever. They are not standard retail channel configurations.

Huh. Okay. I know when I got my Air just before Xmas they did have some of the non-standard configurations available at my store. But perhaps that was just due to the holiday.

There are non-standard configurations that are retail channel configurations. For example, you can walk into an Apple Store, and get a 15" MacBook Pro with a hi-res anti-glare display. Not a standard online configuration (normally a BTO), but is a standard retail channel configuration.

However I've personally confirmed at several stores that SSD-equipped iMacs are not standard retail channel configurations for the mid-2011 iMacs.

Okay. I REALLY wanted to power the thing up and check its condition, check the pixels and look for screen yellowing in store but I guess that is not an option since I want the SSD. Plus I feel that shipping a pallet of computers get less "beat up" then the shipping the individual boxes. Oh well. Thanks for the info!

Hmmm, I just called about my order (27" i7, SSD, 2GB VRAM, 1TB HDD, ordered on May 3, estimated shipping on June 15), and they didn't have anything extra to tell me--still scheduled to ship on June 15. Oh well....

SSD Built In!

People are also speculating about the reasons for SSD shipping delays on the Apple.com discussion forum. The latest post mentions a new possibility:

Weird, huh?

NO! I just talked to a rep that said the same, but when I asked why, he said because the SSD was like a Macbook Air, it's built into the motherboard!!!

ARRGgg.. not sure I want to wait.. is this a good thing? I'm not so sure.. (This rep was with the business group division, as I run a small business, not sure if that would make any difference.)

MacBook Air SSDs are not built into the motherboard. They are micro-SATA (mSATA) connectors, and are secured on one end with a single screw (the other end being an mSATA connector for power and data).

They are 100% user-serviceable aside from the fact that mSATA SSDs are still incredibly rare.

I just got a call from Apple in Austin, TX regarding my order. I had posted some feedback on some other issues and we got into a general discussion regarding the discrepancy in the lead times on the SSD CTOs.

He noted that it seemed odd. His only insight into the delay thus far is a part shortage, but that's the last he heard and all he's currently aware of. If I find out more, I'll let people know.

impatiently waiting

21.5" w/ 256 SSD supposed to ship today! No notification from apple yet and status still showing "Prepared for Shipment". Refresh... Refresh... Refresh... Refresh....
