If you can get that System Profiler screenshot up ASAP that would be a huge piece of information a lot of people would appreciate. There's plenty of info that people can derive from the part information.

Here are the system profiler screenshots for both HDD and SSD.

So it appears the 21.5" iMac has a Toshiba HG3. Same as the 2011 MacBook Pros.

Want a MacBook Pro with an SSD? 1-3 days lead time.
Want a 27" iMac with presumably the same SSD? Still showing as 4-6 weeks.

Really doesn't make a lick of sense. Keep in mind, if you opt for no SSD in the 27" iMac, your shipment time is at worst 2-4 days. iFixit showed that it looks as if the SSDs are mounted to the optical drive, so the mounting bracket should be identical between the 21.5" and 27.0" units. The SSDs are presumably identical as well. The reason for the holdup is a helluva mystery at this point, and is probably some underlying logistical ****up.

Do they need a different SSD firmware for the 27"? This would be the only explaination I could imagine ... (but it doesn't make sense from a technical point of view, does it?)

Nope, doesn't make sense. apparently, the waiting time is a huge joke. :/

I called Apple yesterday (to discuss Photoshop activation that can't happen until my BTO iMac arrives) and inquired about the delay.

In a very snarky tone, the young lady replied "well solid state drives take a long time to build, you know."

To which I laughed out loud and asked if she was kidding me.

End of conversation.

Getting aggravated.

Benchmark thread created

XBench and Aja System test would be nice. Other suggestions, anyone?

Hi guys, I am the lucky bastard who is typing this message on his Thunderbolt/SSD equiped 21.5" iMac. :)
I have created a new thread for the benchmarking of 2011 iMac's with SSD.

Unfortunately I am a total newb when it comes to benchmarking so I probably have run some very un-helpful ones.

Maybe I can post some more tomorrow if there are suggestions...

For the record, if anyone gets a call from Apple about their order, when they ask if there's anything they can do for you, request an autographed photo of Bob Mansfield.

It didn't occur to me to ask for it the other day, just to see what reaction I would get.

Are you saying that they called you out of the blue asking to compensate you for the wait!? And someone else said they got a 2% discount?? How do you go about getting this, just call and b*tch about the wait?

And can anyone confirm what that one poster said about, "your Mac is being assembled and should be finished Friday and ship next week." Anyone else manage to squeeze that kind of info out of an Apple rep? So far everyone I've talked to has known absolutely nothing and has just insulted my intelligence by reciting from an employee handbook or whatever...

Added my order to the spreadsheet.

An estimated 6 weeks and 2 days just to ship and then another week for delivery. Thankfully I'm a patient person. :D

Yet another dubious explanation

I ordered the 27" with SSD on 5/5 and was given 6/17 as the ship date.

I called this Monday to add a hard drive to the order, and they wouldn't let me without canceling.

They told me that they were having problems getting the SSD from the supplier because the supplier had made it twice as fast as before, so that should be worth the wait.

I have no idea what validity this has.

Do u mean.. the SSD drive needs te be twice as fast in speed, or twice as fast to produce the SSD drives?

He implied that the performance was 2x what it was previously. To me this implies that the 27" will get a different version of the SSD. Perhaps SATA3.

I didn't push the subject, but he clearly stated that the manufacturer had improved the performance 2x for us.

I would take his claims with a heavy grain of salt. With all sorts of Apple phone reps saying they have no information about the delay (e.g. the one I talked to when I called a few days ago), why would this random guy have access to this information?

I'm afraid the SATA2 drive in the 21.5"s is almost certainly going to be the drive that the 27"s get.

I tend to agree that there's no reason to believe this rep had more information than any other. He was trying to be very nice, perhaps because I'm a very loyal, high-spending customer. He also offered to talk to his manager about allowing me to add the hard drive without canceling the order, thus retaining my ship date.

I'm not sure why they aren't allowing me to add a hard drive unless this thing is already in assembly.

I'm hoping it is faster, and I think it is a possibility. But I'm not banking on it.

Just wanted to add my experience here. The apple rep had no new information for me but did offer to upgrade me to next day air for free, which I obviously accepted.

What did you say? I want to follow your same path of conversation to get the same thing :D

Basically asked if they had any new information on my order and if they could do anything about price due to the long wait. Ask for money and receive free shipping seems to be the trick.

The spreadsheet appears to be locked down that you have to have be invited to access it now? Anyone else experiencing this also?

Editing has been re-enabled. The link for the workbook has changed. Please use the link in the first post of this thread.

You are using the old link. I changed the link to mitigate trolling (assuming that trolls were using a bookmark). I just checked the sheet to find it was already trolled again, which means anonymous edits sure as hell still work.
