I ended up buying a power supply for an LCD with a different manufacturer than Asian Power Devices with a similar VA (12V @ 3.0A). $16. Works great, and the output difference is easily verifiable with a multimeter. Probably going to disassemble the power supply to see why they fail so often.

OWC always wanted me to send the enclosure back before sending me a new one, which was a 2-week turnaround (a week to get there, a week to get the new one). I always would instead buy a new one and ship it next day air, so I'd have a solution that worked in 24 hours... granted, that next day air shipping was always on my dime, and they always refused to credit it. My reason to OWC was always, "Well, I need a hard drive that works NOW, not in 2 weeks". I think I spent $125 on those piece of junk PSUs so I wouldn't be dead in the water for 10 weeks of the past year.

I've decided I'm going to back out of the SSD if I don't hear anything new this week. I do NOT want lion and the unexplained wait is leaving me with more questions than confidence.

:( First iMac and an unhappy start.

Boy, I don't get the logic here. Unless Apple has busted a promised ship date (and AFAIK the earliest ship date for the 27" SSD-equipped iMacs is 6/15), then how can you say you're having an "unhappy start?" You knew the expected ship date when you placed the order, and unless you're in Europe, nothing's changed. The real reason behind the SSD delay is what it is, but knowing what that reason is isn't going to make your computer ship any faster.

If you couldn't hold out until 6/15, you shouldn't have placed the order. You have no one to blame but yourself if you're pi$$ed because you expected your computer to actually ship earlier than Apple's promised ship date.

I don't get the logic here either. kfscoll's reasons for being confused are mine too. But it also confuses me that you don't want Lion. If this is not just your first iMac, but your first Mac, then what can be the reasons for avoiding Lion? Longer term, you know that you'll move from Snow Leopard to Lion or a follow-on release.

Now if you are already a Mac user with a need to run PowerPC apps and hence need Rosetta support, then delaying Lion until you sort that issue out may make sense.

And what questions do you have now that you did not have when you placed the order? You ordered an iMac to a creation spec for delivery on a certain date. At this stage, it looks like Apple will deliver exactly what you ordered on the date that they said they would. Nothing has changed.

Who cares what the reason is for the delay that you've known about for several weeks. Maybe it's a supply issue for little brackets that hold an SSD in a 27" chassis. Maybe it's that testing of the the 27" + SSD combo started after the 21" + SSD combo. Maybe all 27" + SSD systems are shipped to Steve Jobs for him to sign them and his illness is slowing the process. Maybe it's Lion? Who cares. Coordinating products like this is a complicated process, and as customers, there are things we just don't need to know even if it is fascinating to us.

Hey, I never said I was pissed. I said I was unhappy.

I get the Apple culture. I waited patiently for my iPhone to be announced, then waited for it to be available in Canada, then waited for it to finally ship. This year I waited for the iMac announcement and now I am waiting for the SSD.

Secrets secrets secrets. Yup, I get the marketing genius of leaving us salivating for product announcements. But reading through this and other forums, no one has any explanation for the 27 delay. If it does turn out to be Lion, I will upgrade to pissed.

Yes I ordered the thing. Notived the 4-6 wk at the end of the order, but like a whole lot of other people was hoping this was an over-estimate. And I would still be willing to wait except for this - no one at apple has a freakn clue. They are giving answers that are either bs or flat out lies - that makes me unhappy. The Europe situation is even worse.

Apple can surely give their customers a little more respect. I'm giving it one more shot this week and I'll be hoping for our European friends that it is a mistake.

No need to get hard core Apple defender, I'm just unhappy with the process. I'm damn sure I'm not the only one who feels this way.

You knew there was a delay to begin with...if it's being delayed due to Lion, my guess is there a reason for it.

I don't think Apple would hold from shipping out available items...and if they didn't state originally why it would be a 4-6 week ship time, and they're still in those estimates, why would they now?

Sorry it hasn't shipped early but they never said it would do that either.

I was/am strongly considering the +SSD option but I chose to wait until the ship times (and subsequent User feedback) became available.

As for Apple not "respecting you", the secrecy you so abhor is to avoid customer dissatisfaction and worry.

It's a shame that a few customer-facing Apple employees may have indulged in some level of speculation, and this has been translated into "bs" or "lies". This is exactly why Apple has a policy of releasing information on a need-to-know basis. Now you think they are dishonest.

Let's say that they tell you that the reason is that they've run out some special screw needed for the SSD in the 27" iMac. Then someone will speculate that maybe Apple might use weaker screws in order to ship the iMacs.

Let's say that the reason for the delay is associated with some supplier agreement which has yet to made public, and, if disclosed, could scuttle the agreement, and have profound legal and Wall St implications.

You don't have a need or right to know such stuff.

I'm not meaning to come off as a hard core Apple defender, but as a person who has worked in technology companies for a long time in pretty much all roles in the process from concept to product shipment, and sales to installation.

Wow, cut the guy some slack. I'm not canceling my order or anything, but I can certainly sympathize. It is frustrating when a company can't offer any explanation for a delay, even if we knew there would be one when we made the purchase. Why does it need to be a secret? Just playing the devil's advocate here because I think it's a little silly everyone rushing to Apple's defense over this.

I wouldn't worry about getting Lion when your iMac ships, either. The current Developer Preview 3 is still quite buggy and there's not even a gold master candidate floating around yet. I'd much rather get Snow Leopard with my new iMac (whenever it ships) and install Lion after the second point release.

+1

I am frustrated at the lack of communication, now made worse by the changing ship dates in Europe.

I get that I knew it would be 4-6 weeks when I placed the order ... But the Apple Rep who placed the order over the phone told me it shouldn't actually take that long.

Now it is taking that long and potentially into July (although my date hasn't actually changed) wouldn't it be polite to give sone reassurances over these changing approaches. As a customer they should want to exceed my expectations but currently I can't say I know what to expect ;)

Hey, anyway, I'm just bloomin excited so why shouldn't I be a little impatient :D

Apple CR

I have to say that I am impressed with Apple Customer Relations.

I need my iMac order to complete a project so I thought - what the hell, I'll just email head office and see if they can help - that's what they're there for after all.

I've had very speedy responses from both COO office and the Executive Relations Team in Ireland who are now looking in to where my iMac is right now/ship times (and in the hope that I could pass you guys any information that might help).

So far, Executive Relations are taking over my order to see through from now until I boot it up. Interestingly, they are taking the simple stand that "you were told it would be with you by June 20 and there is nothing to say any different"

They have no official line other than you are getting it within the timeframe we suggested and we didn't want to give you false hope by communicating earlier.

I am told they will come back with any update later today - which may help give an idea of any improvements on ship times (or may not!) for those who are interested.

Shipping date moved back, now forward!?!

I had June 17/June 27 listed as shipping and delivery dates, now it is July 8/July 19 for my May 3 order.
Shipping date got changed again, this time to
June 14, 2011 as shipping date
June 16, 2011 as delivery date

Both are ahead of the original estimates. I can only assume that this is related to my Friday email asking Apple to at least change delivery from surface to air after delaying my order to late July. I do of course have no idea how reliable this estimated shipping date is - after all my Macbook Air was scheduled to arrive Dec, 22, 2010 and came in mid-January. But now, there is hope that the order cancellation/reentry that many other continental Europeans reported was indeed a computer glitch.

apple promised a 4 to 6 week lead time. unless any of the 27" promise dates which are due sometime soon are missed, i'm not sure why anyone is getting upset.

Agreed - not upset at all. Just simply need to plan when I can start this project. When you understand 4-6 weeks (2 weeks makes a difference from the outset), then "probably less", then possibly July etc etc.

Just wanted some official clarity that's all - not unreasonable given the sums of money involved.

Have to admit that I am all still intrigued as to why the delay in the SSD 27" specifically - but I guess we'll never know - which is fine also.:D

probably a firmware incompatibility. probably working around it with a software fix or a mad dash fix with the supplier. typical in this industry.

Bet it's fun to be the guys on the front line there at the moment ;)

Suspect there were a few  faces

Am sure it will be all awesome when it gets here - absence makes the heart grow fonder :D

Emotions are human

apple promised a 4 to 6 week lead time. [...] i'm not sure why anyone is getting upset.
Most people are just eagerly awaiting their delivery like kids waiting for Santa. Yet, some of us received messages from Apple telling us about an additional three+ week delay (they called that "3-4 working days"), putting us at par with anyone freshly ordering their SSD 27" on that day rather than May 3.
From my count we have 10 people affected: Pring, cfc, nad, bassanoclapper and dfine196 from the UK, Yorr from the Netherlands, Norne from Norway, mike9, ogee and Air2 from Germany.
So, it is all Europeans but seems random: Other UK/Dutch customers reported no delays. That and :apple:'s (lack of) explanation got people emotional. I hope you can understand. Besides, this is a RUMOR site and those are bound to be more emotional than stamp collector databases.

I got a call back from Apple Exec Relations today. They confirmed that the date of my order changing to July was an error and that it should still ship on June 14th. I checked the status page and it has reverted to the 14th June. Hopefully everyone else' whose date changed to July has had it rolled back too.

My shipping and delivery dates are now back to June 14th and June 20th, so I am happy again. Anyone who couldn't see why some of us were unhappy with the extra 4 week delay is a lot more understanding than I am!

My guess is that the cancellation and rebooking is what caused the problem. Apple had to cancel/rebook for the 3/4 day "warehouse" delay that they mentioned in their email, but this meant that the orders were treated as new on the day they rebooked them. As a result they went to the back of the queue with shipping dates as if we had just ordered, instead of having ordering on the first day. Apple have now corrected this and put us back where we should be.

All just speculation though. Hopefully customer services will get back to me today with more details, as they promised.

Back on track, it seems

My iMac order again lists as 'ship the 14th, delivery 22nd' of June.

This makes the 'glitch theory' of cfc attractive.

Happy again ;)

Ship Date Confirmation

Had my promised call back from Executive Office Relations and all is spot on for shipping on 15th/delivery on 20th. :D

I am told that she will continue to monitor the order until I boot it up and, should anything change, she will be in touch.

Now to just be patient :p

At least there's the WWDC Keynote next week :)

It's time for a bong toke, everyone. Put on some reggae, sit back, cross your legs. Chill.
