As a Purdue fan, I'm glad the Big Ten is adding teams that we can regularly compete against. :D

The University of Maryland's Board of Regents on Monday voted unanimously to accept an invitation to join the Big Ten Conference and leave the Atlantic Coast Conference, sources told ESPN on Monday.

The board unanimously approved the move to the Big Ten, a regent told ESPN. An afternoon announcement is expected.

Sources also said that Rutgers is expected to follow the Terrapins and will announce its own move from the Big East to the Big Ten, possibly as early as Tuesday. A Scarlet Knights move would give the Big Ten 14 members.

Rutgers' Board of Governors is holding a regularly scheduled meeting Monday in New Brunswick, N.J.

When Maryland, a charter member of the ACC, will make the move to the Big Ten is unknown, but sources at the school believe the Terps will be able to negotiate the current $50 million exit fee from the ACC to a lower amount. The additions of Maryland and Rutgers would spur the Big Ten toward negotiations on a new media rights deal when its first-tier rights expire in 2017.

ESPN on Saturday first reported on the negotiations between Maryland and the Big Ten. Maryland was one of eight schools to start the ACC in 1953.

Looks like the real deal

Rutgers and Georgia Tech are being talked as the 14th team to the Big Ten... GT would bring the Atlanta market, and Rutgers could potentially bring in the NYC/NJ market (if the rumored Fox takeover of the YES Network is true).

I think I read somewhere with the addition of Maryland, and possibly GT and/or Rutgers... the Big Ten Network would have a foothold in 7 of the top 20 TV markets in the country === $$$$$$$$. I think Stewart Mandel conservatively estimated an additional $10 million to each Big Ten school.

Watching the teams play, watching how they play in conference.

So it's based on nothing. Check.

They are # 12.

Right, my bad. They were #9 last week. Where is Baylor ranked after proving they belong among the Big 12's elite?

Watch and see how they play against Clemson. And they lost their best player when again?

Lattimore got hurt early against UT. They're 3-0 (including that game) since the injury against pretty weak competition. The Clemson game will be interesting.

College football. Anything can happen. This isn't NCAA 2013 where heaving a 95 rated player means they always play at that level.

Very credible excuse. Kudos.

Supposedly Fox will control 49% of YES, and I don't know what that has to do with Rutgers anyways. Plus Rutgers really is not the huge powerhouse in the region they want to think they are.

Lol Baylor proved nothing of the sort. They had a surprise, fluke win. It's called college football.

Case and point.

Those are the facts here. That's why K State is still ranked in the top 10. This stuff happens every weekend.

Either way.

Yup. Real objective opinion I bet.

It's the market. You have marquee programs come play in New York and you're going to draw huge crowds and increase the fan base.

Rutgers can barely win in the Big East as it is, how will they do in the Big Ten?

Point is, YES becomes Fox's foothold into getting the BTN on to the basic cable tier in NYC. Rutgers to the Big Ten = exposure on basic cable in NYC. Add to the that the huge alumni base of Michigan and other Big Ten grads in NYC = increased demand for BTN on the basic cable tier = more $$$$.

Fox might not get control of YES for another 5 years if the Yankees opt to sell their 34% share. I like YES being independent now and not sure I want the Fox Sports branding taking over. There are also rumors that CBS is looking to buy in as well.

Fox is also starting a national sports network in 2013.

Probably get stomped by the A tier.

Compete with Minnesota or whatever.

But importantly, Big Ten gets access to NYC and DC markets.

Every weekend? When was the last time the BCS #1 lost by four TDs to a sub-.500 team?

That exact scenario? No that doesn't happen every weekend. Upsets coming out of nowhere? Yeah every weekend.

The true money for the Big Ten Network is for the Rutgers fan base to drive carriers to put the Big Ten Network on its basic tier so it can automatically generate subscriber fees for every customer even if they have no interest in the channel. But New York is not an easy market. Cablevision battled in a price war for two years with the Yankees and didn’t show the entire 2002 season. Time Warner didn’t air a month and a half of Knicks, Rangers and Islanders games to its 2 million customers in the New York area last season after negotiating with the MSG Network.

Maybe confirmed.

They will get the games on TV. And people are going to want to go see Rutgers vs Penn State, Rutgers vs Michigan, etc...

This is a long term thing, they're going to build the Big Ten brand up in those markets. It's going to end up being a genius move in the end.

Even if that didn't happen, it blocks out other conferences from getting those schools and the same access.

Again, you are assuming that people in NY care about those teams - they just don't. And the fact that those teams will now be playing Rutgers instead of each other isn't going to make them care any more. College basketball on the other hand...

UConn signed a long term television deal with SNY and they are not even anywhere close to NYC.

Rutgers does not have a big fan base, I doubt people will be clamoring to see these games. I think there are more St Johns and Hosftra fans in the area.

Eh, Maryland and Rutgers are national brand. Even if people don't want to see marquee national football teams come to town (and get excited if they beat one of those teams), basketball.

And still, it's about what's actually on television. Pretty much everybody in the country likes college football. The fact that it's on TV is a benefit worth having, compared to either not having Big Ten teams on TV, or having other conferences on TV in those markets.

When I lived in NY, I knew quite a few who were big Rutgers fans so I challenge your assumption they don't care:)

Since when is Rutgers a national brand?

You may be a bit biased because you're in Ohio - and you may think everybody in the country thinks like you do, but it's just not a big deal for most in NY. The ratings in the article MacNut linked would be proof of that. There may be a little more to do on a Saturday night in Manhattan than in Ohio. ;)

And Rutgers is not a national brand.

Again, I'm talking about the area as a whole - of course Rutgers fans are going to care. They'll watch the team whatever conference they are in or whatever team they are playing. But for everyone else - it's just not going to matter - and they all of a sudden aren't go to care more just because they are playing Michigan.

lol no. It's just all across the country college football is popular.

but it's just not a big deal for most in NY. The ratings in the article MacNut linked would be proof of that.

Well yeah, because who in NY has been playing anybody or been nationally relevant?

There may be a little more to do on a Saturday night in Manhattan than in Ohio. ;)

meh, been to NYC. Not all that much to do on Saturday that you can't do anywhere else. And besides, nothing to do on Saturday morning/afternoon

And Rutgers is not a national brand.

Yes they are

But for everyone else - it's just not going to matter - and they all of a sudden aren't go to care more just because they are playing Michigan.

I think you'd be surprised
