If you didn't get your MacBook in on time, there may still be hope!
Sorry in advance for the long post, but I'm excited!
My mid-2012 MacBook Pro Retina has had the "Service Battery" warning on for over a year and even though it's my personal computer I use it for work, so a few months ago my supervisior gave me the go ahead to get it fixed and my employer would pay for the $200 repair.
I wasn't in a rush to be without my computer for a week while it got fixed so I hadn't gotten around to bringing it in yet.
Then, when I read the MacRumors article about the computer replacements on Monday, July 24, I made an appointment for that evening BUT I wanted to make sure I had a good backup of all of my files before bringing it in just in case they wanted to take my computer from me that day.
About a half hour before the appointment I realized I didn't have enough time to finish the backup So I rescheduled the appointment to Friday. That way I'd have plenty of time to make sure everything was backed up and I'd be sure to have the computer for work for the rest of the week.
Later in the week I read that the replacement offer had ended and was extremely disappointed in myself that I had skipped my Monday appointment! I wasn't hopeful for my new appointment on Friday, but the battery needed to be replaced regardless so I brought it to the appointment on Friday, July 28.
As I suspected, when I got to the Genius Bar I was told that the part was "constrained" but they could order it and it should arrive by August 8.
They asked if I wanted to keep my computer until then. Obviously I did.
Here are the notes:
Issue: Customer states that battery drains rapidly and that he is getting a warning at top of screen to replace battery.
Steps to Reproduce: Visually verified warning. Ran MRI, battery tests as consumed.
Cosmetic Condition: Scuffing to edges of top case. Debris on keyboard. Light delamination of display. Light scuffing on enclosure and bottom case.
Proposed Resolution: Order topcase/battery so that we can replace oow battery cost of $199 plus tax. Customer has backup. He will hold onto machine until part comes in so that he can use it for the time being.
Estimated Turn Around Time: We'll call you in 3 - 5 days.
I got a phone call one week later (August 4) letting me know that the battery/top case was in and I had until this Wednesday to bring my laptop in for the repair.
I had some projects I wanted to finish before bringing it in, so I waited until Wednesday to drop it off (August 9.)
But to my surprise, I got a phone call today (August 10) from the Apple Store.
The guy on the phone said "When we run the diagnosis on your computer your logic board is now failing our tests. We don't have this part in stock and neither do any of the other stores in the area so I was wondering if you would be ok with us replacing your whole machine?"
I was thrilled but didn't want to sound too excited over the phone so I said, "As long as you'd be replacing it with a computer with at least as good of specs, sure."
He let me know that he still needed to to get final approval for the replacement, but he wanted my consent and they'd likely call me tomorrow with more details.
As soon as I hung up, I wished I would've asked if it would still be the same price as just the battery replacement or if they wanted the price of a logic board replacement too, but I was so excited, I didn't even think about asking about the cost.
I still don't know the outcome or what they're offering as a replacement, but I'm thrilled and had to share my story and let everyone know that even if you missed the replacement due to the battery issue, you've still got a small chance they'll catch something else and offer you a complete machine replacement!
