Just received a call from Apple in Australia, I was quoted a 2016 Touch Bar replacement weeks ago but they have now downgraded it to a 2015 2.5Ghz due to the refurbished 2016 being out of stock. They apologised and also advised that the batteries are in stock now and I could opt for the repair instead. I of course have decided to take the replacement. As a side note a friend in NYC has just been told that she is receiving a Touch Bar though she is unsure if it is 2016 or 2017.

Thats a bit of bad luck. Though its still great that you're getting a replacement. Maybe you can tell them thats what you were promised and that you've switched to USB C peripherals? ;)

So I took my mid-2012, 2.6, 256 in July 25. I was offered to wait on the battery or a replacement, which I took. I was told that I would receive at least a 2015 2.8, 256. My credit card info was taken that same day but was never charged in the two weeks following. I also made periodic calls to the store and they told me that they had placed the order and it could take up to 14 business (or 20 days). Well, on yesterday I called to check on things again and they were busy. When they did call me back, they stated that there was still no update. Then they stated that they recognize that it has been a while since I placed the order and would simply give me a computer from the store. They told me to come in and pick up my computer, which was a 2017 tb, 2.8, 256. I did pick it up Tuesday night in Virginia.

If you didn't get your MacBook in on time, there may still be hope!

Sorry in advance for the long post, but I'm excited!

My mid-2012 MacBook Pro Retina has had the "Service Battery" warning on for over a year and even though it's my personal computer I use it for work, so a few months ago my supervisior gave me the go ahead to get it fixed and my employer would pay for the $200 repair.

I wasn't in a rush to be without my computer for a week while it got fixed so I hadn't gotten around to bringing it in yet.

Then, when I read the MacRumors article about the computer replacements on Monday, July 24, I made an appointment for that evening BUT I wanted to make sure I had a good backup of all of my files before bringing it in just in case they wanted to take my computer from me that day.

About a half hour before the appointment I realized I didn't have enough time to finish the backup So I rescheduled the appointment to Friday. That way I'd have plenty of time to make sure everything was backed up and I'd be sure to have the computer for work for the rest of the week.

Later in the week I read that the replacement offer had ended and was extremely disappointed in myself that I had skipped my Monday appointment! I wasn't hopeful for my new appointment on Friday, but the battery needed to be replaced regardless so I brought it to the appointment on Friday, July 28.

As I suspected, when I got to the Genius Bar I was told that the part was "constrained" but they could order it and it should arrive by August 8.

They asked if I wanted to keep my computer until then. Obviously I did.

Here are the notes:
Issue: Customer states that battery drains rapidly and that he is getting a warning at top of screen to replace battery.
Steps to Reproduce: Visually verified warning. Ran MRI, battery tests as consumed.
Cosmetic Condition: Scuffing to edges of top case. Debris on keyboard. Light delamination of display. Light scuffing on enclosure and bottom case.
Proposed Resolution: Order topcase/battery so that we can replace oow battery cost of $199 plus tax. Customer has backup. He will hold onto machine until part comes in so that he can use it for the time being.
Estimated Turn Around Time: We'll call you in 3 - 5 days.

I got a phone call one week later (August 4) letting me know that the battery/top case was in and I had until this Wednesday to bring my laptop in for the repair.

I had some projects I wanted to finish before bringing it in, so I waited until Wednesday to drop it off (August 9.)

But to my surprise, I got a phone call today (August 10) from the Apple Store.

The guy on the phone said "When we run the diagnosis on your computer your logic board is now failing our tests. We don't have this part in stock and neither do any of the other stores in the area so I was wondering if you would be ok with us replacing your whole machine?"

I was thrilled but didn't want to sound too excited over the phone so I said, "As long as you'd be replacing it with a computer with at least as good of specs, sure."

He let me know that he still needed to to get final approval for the replacement, but he wanted my consent and they'd likely call me tomorrow with more details.

As soon as I hung up, I wished I would've asked if it would still be the same price as just the battery replacement or if they wanted the price of a logic board replacement too, but I was so excited, I didn't even think about asking about the cost.

I still don't know the outcome or what they're offering as a replacement, but I'm thrilled and had to share my story and let everyone know that even if you missed the replacement due to the battery issue, you've still got a small chance they'll catch something else and offer you a complete machine replacement!

Just picked mine up! Had to give them a call and apparently it's been in the store for a few days now and I didn't receive a call or email...

Got a 2016 Silver / 2.7 / 16gb / 5125gb

So I got a call this morning that the system had arrived, but was not what they ordered, was not a TB model and was a UK top case... they offered me that one, to start the process over or to give me the highest-spec model they offer in store (but with a UK keyboard) so I took that option! They also added Apple Care so that was a nice bonus as well, definitely good support from Apple!

My timeline was that it took 3 days for the store to get back to me. I was initially offered a 2015 model which they ordered (credit card details took), then a couple of days later (Tuesday) the store came back to me and said there's no stock and that they're getting me a 2017 one. That's all I've heard and haven't had any credit card charge so far.

To say I'm nervous is understating it!

Been a long time but 3 weeks after model being confirmed - I collect my promised 2017 TB Macbook last Wednesday 16th August. Absolutely unbelievable! Honestly, it sounds sad but I genuinely couldn't stop thinking about it and felt really tense about it for ages, but man that relief when I first opened the box.

This has just guaranteed my long-term affection and loyalty to Apple - no other company would ever do something like this.

Have to give a huge, huge thanks to those who started this thread and pointed this replacement scheme out. I still strongly oppose that MacRumors and other tech websites started publishing news stories about this scheme, and potentially putting our genuine replacements in jeopardy - thank goodness Apple is a decent company and didn't put a halt to all of them.

The saga finally comes to an end, and like others, I got a 2016 even though they quoted me a 2015. Happy camper over here :)

And the saga begins anew...not even a month since I received my replacement, the touch bar display is completely dead. Buttons still work though even though they're not visible. Tried all remedies that I'm aware of. Back to the Genius Bar I go...guess I need a new top case again :p

First post here.... but thought I would add my 2c. Been a bit of a saga compared to some of these stories, but still consider myself pretty lucky.

Originally was told on first appt that I would be getting a 2015/2016 model of at least the same specs within a few days. Been phoning up AppleCare (& the store) almost weekly since to find out what is happening (with no news). Finally get a call on Monday from the store, saying all my details had been lost. After reproviding, was told only option was 2015 2.5/16/512+GPU. Take it or leave it. I was also told that technically this should be faster than my 2012 2.7 as it ramped up to a faster clock speed. I guess? it would be an upgrade, especially graphics card & ssd speed, so I said yeah ok, though was suss on the processor speed downgrade. Looking on the apple Australia site though, these refurb models aren't currently available, so will see what appears when I go in. Card been charged so guessing it will be soon. My current 2012 rmbp battery is around 70-80%, but often turns off when under load on battery when under 60% charge, so any replacement can't come soon enough.

My story came to an end today!

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I missed the deadline for my appointment and was offered a battery replacement for $200 and they said the top case/battery would be available August 8. They called me saying the battery was in and I could bring my computer in for the repair, I dropped it off August 9 and got a phone call August 10 saying they were now getting an error on their tests with my logic board and offered me a replacement, but they had to submit the replacement request to whatever Apple department handles replacements.

That phone call was on a Thursday, by the following Tuesday I hadn't heard anything so I stopped back in the store, they said they were still waiting on the replacement authorization but I could take my old computer back while I waited.

To my surprise, when I got my old computer back I found that they had done the battery replacement! But any time I tried to run an application that used the dedicated graphics card, the computer would crash. So it looks like in the process of changing the top case/battery they must have messed up the secondary GPU.

I finally got a phone call yesterday saying the replacement was in. When I went to the store to pick it up, the woman said I just needed to sign the replacement form and show my ID and the computer was mine. Before signing I asked if I could look at the specs of the replacement computer.

The replacement they had gotten for me was a Silver (I think 2015) 2.8GHz i7/16gb/512gb/Intel Iris Pro GPU.

I do a lot of video editing and Adobe After Effects work and often max out my RAM while rendering. I asked if the replacement computer they were offering had a dedicated GPU to allow me to use all 16gb RAM available to the system while the GPU used it's own memory.

She took the computer to the back and looked into it while I looked up the specs of the NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M of my original computer vs the Intel Iris Pro 5200 that was being offered. The dedicated graphics card won out in many areas. When she came back, I showed her the results and let her know that I didn't want to downgrade my graphics card by accepting a replacement that was not as good as my original computer. She was very nice about the whole thing and said she would see what she could do, but it may take a while as they would have to start the replacement process over again. That was yesterday.

I got a phone call today asking if I would be alright taking a 2017 model with a Radeon Pro 560 with 4GB of GPU memory, the gentleman I spoke to said they had the model in stock today if I wanted to come pick it up. I picked up my brand new 2017 MacBook Pro this evening!

The best part about the whole thing is that when all was said and done I ended up walking out of the store with a 5 year newer computer with a much better processor and GPU and (I'm assuming because they messed up the logic board during the battery repair) they didn't even charge me for the battery replacement I originally brought it in for.

It was a long process, but it definitely worked out well in the end. The Apple staff were all very friendly and helpful throughout the process.

I know exactly what you mean, it was a pretty lengthy month for me as well... It sounds lame to talk about it out loud, but it was hard not to think about it constantly and worry that they wouldn't fulfill the items that had come in before they ended it - it was definitely a big relief when it finally came to an end!

I too am a big fan of the customer service I've received from Apple, it's been very good - and while I don't know that I'd say nobody else would do it, though I do think it seems fairly unique, it does help affirm my positive opinion of the company in general.

I also want to thank the forum members who brought this out in this thread and the other, without stumbling upon it accidentally - I wouldn't have gotten this taken care of... and I too was disappointed that it was publicized by MacRumors and the others, which actually did result in a friend not being able to get a similar outcome (although the free battery replacement certainly isn't nothing)

"and I too was disappointed that it was publicized by MacRumors and the others, which actually did result in a friend not being able to get a similar outcome"

I am not sure that I am understanding this comment. It is because of MacRumors and others that so many including myself were able to get replacement computers. Also it is has been pointed out that Apple was looking to end the replacements regardless of the MacRumors article. Still even if they would have ended the program because of the publicity, MacRumors did the right thing in posting the information. Keep in mind it is a website that deals with stories (and Rumors) on Apple products. So if you feel that bad for your friend for missing out on the replacement, why not give him your replacement and stop whining about MacRumors. This goes for the other people whining about MacRumors also.

giving CC details by phone it's not safe and sounds similar like purchase in 90s, should be available PayPal option or secure connection by ApplePay

If you really want to give credit where it's due... seems like it first appeared on Reddit, and it's not "because of Macrumors", it's because of the people on the forum - and they're the people I'm grateful for as well. Regardless of whether Apple was planning to end the program, if you think that knowledge of the program going wide wouldn't have any effect on what their timeframe looked like, then I don't know what to tell you. It's certainly not absurd to see that there might be some linkage between the publicity and the end of the program.

I'm not sure how many MBPs there were out there that fit into the program, but I'd wager it was a fairly significant significant number given how long people keep their laptops, so one can just imagine that a story about the replacements getting significant publicity would ramp up the cost rapidly- at least if you think about it.

I and others gave thanks to MacRumors. This is in no way takes away from Reddit. But many did not hear of it the rumor from Reddit but MacRumors. Now since you want to focus on who I should really give thanks for regarding the replacement well that's Apple (and God for His sovereignty).

Why come to MacRumors and constantly whine about Rumors? The story should have gotten a lot of attention and it did. Sorry to tell you that the world doesn't wait for your friend to catch every deal.

Again, you have so much sympathy for your friend and his unfortunate situation. I still do not hear you saying that you will give him your replacement or better yet just buy him a new MacBook. Oh, I guess you don't have that much sympathy for his situation.
