Can you confirm please? Somewhere it said 1TB 7,600 spinner as standard. Or are the two not mutually exclusive?

"1TB (7200-rpm) hard drive

Configurable to 3TB hard drive, 1TB or 3TB Fusion Drive, or 768GB of flash storage."

Notability it looks like there's no 2-drive option. If you want SSD+HDD, your choices are Fusion or external.

This 5400 RPM HDD in the 21'5 is a ********** joke wtf?? You are forced to buy a fusion drive...

Keeping costs down for people that were considering the Vizio.

I'm going to have to give fusion a go BUT I am very nervous

That new iMac is revolutionary. I can't believe they've managed to pack all that computing power into a machine so thin. I find it so hard to believe that I'm not going to order one because I'm sure there will be the usual 1st gen problems fixed in the 2nd gen refresh. :D

What are you thinking? 768 or 3TB fusion. I was hoping for 768 and 768, dual flash maybe.

My apologies. The slides made it seem like the cached drive is standard. It is not standard, but a BTO option. Check out the specs here

http://www.apple.com/imac/specs/

It's not even an option on the bottom spec 21.5"

And I can't see the price for the damn BTO option anywhere...they really are nervous about these screen yields if they won't even open it for preorder yet...late nov and on Santa's sleigh look like the prospects right now

I don't need all that much space. There should be a few different SSD options. So I'll see.

The Mac Mini comes with a 1 TB 5200 rpm spinner, and BTO to 1 TB fusion for $250 or 256GB SSD for $300. Given those prices I'm thinking of going 1 TB fusion.

on the 27":

8GB (two 4GB) of 1600MHz DDR3 memory;four user-accessible SO-DIMM slots
Configurable to 16GB or 32GB.

so, does that mean it will in reality will support 64GB? or at least 48? hope so :)

ThAt does not sound so bad in terms of price. For $700 (if that is what they will charge for 768GB SSD, I may be tempted to max out SSD and reduce my risk of taking on first generation likely teething problems with Fusion

I was REALLY hoping today would be the last day I'd read on this thread... but looks like we're all going to be waiting together another 2 months

I would much prefer this than waiting until December frustrated about when it will come out. But yes, I agree, waiting sucks.

The question of the thread has sort of been answered though. October 23rd.

At least now we know it's coming.
Save up a bit more. And in december, BAM, new iMac.

But i don't want a fusion drive. I rather have a SSD inside and an external usb 3.0 2 TB drive.

Can't even buy a 2011 now...not until they open up pre-order and put the old ones on clearance...

They mentioned in the keynote that the fusion drive is "almost" as fast as a SSD. Depends on what they mean by "almost". I'm going to hope the 768GB SSD option is around $500-$600, and I'll go with that. Any bulk storage could easily be added via USB 3.

It should be much more pleasant around here without all the "no 2012 iMac" "desktops are EOL" etc etc :)

There are still certain people who shall remain nameless that will throw a tantrum while waiting to actually be able to buy one.. but I for one find myself much happier than I was a few hours ago.

Not sure about it myself. I love the idea of seamless, especially how he described Aperture being almost as fast as strictly flash across the SSD+HD fusion drive... guess it's going to depend partly on price, but if the cost for the 3TB option isn't too bad, I'll bite.

I feel MUCH better, because I know that in just a couple months I'll be done dealing with my machine struggling with my work, and I won't be paying for old hardware either :)

Yeah i'm still doubtfull about the speed of the fusion drive actually.
If it's an inbetween solution (speedwise) i rather go fast and external for storage (and less ehat in my iMAc)

So can someone tell me if im correct in my comparisons between buying a 27" refurb and a new iMac?

Refurb:

-$1599, 3.1GHz i5, 4GB RAM, CD Drive, 1TB HD, USB 2.0 & Firewire 800

New:

-$1799, 2.9GHz i5, 8GB RAM, No CD Drive, 1TB HD, USB 3.0 & no firewire?

Is the processor in the new iMac a more powerful processor or no? The fact that there is no firewire on the new iMac is basically a deal breaker for me. I have audio equipment that runs via firewire and I'm not about to buy new gear.

If this is the case, I'm just going to go refurb as they've already dropped in price.

What about the screen ... a slight improvement here :D

Yeah same, the imac is so nice, cant' wait to get one. Your getting the 27inch model?

I'm guessing we are going to have to get the fusion drive as you can't upgrade hard drive but you still can the RAM which is cool.
